A new opinion poll for the Las Vegas Review-Journal shows that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid may have a tough fight for re-election in 2010.
Nearly half of Nevadans have had enough of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid as the powerful Democrat heads into his re-election campaign, a new Las Vegas Review-Journal poll finds.
About a third of the state’s voters would re-elect Reid if the 2010 election were held today, according to the poll, but 45 percent say they would definitely vote to replace him. Seventeen percent would consider another candidate.
The senior Senator’s fav/unfav ratings suck:
Half of Nevada voters had an unfavorable view of Reid, while 38 percent had a favorable view and 11 percent a neutral opinion.
Of course, Nevada voters can view an officeholder as unfavorably as they do, but without a credible opponent, Reid may still coast to re-election.
"Reid’s fortunes are going to hinge on two things: Does he draw a strong challenger, and what does the economy do," [Mason-Dixon Managing Partner Brad] Coker said. "If Obama and his policies are seen as a success and the economy by mid-2010 appears to be doing better, these numbers will turn around some. The other side of that coin is, if the economy doesn’t seem to be improving, particularly in Nevada," Reid could have a tough time.
No major opponent has yet stepped up to face Reid.
Still, it looks like the Nevada homefires need tending. Harry Reid doesn’t want to endure Tom Daschle’s fate, that’s for sure. What better way to make Nevadans feel that he’s tending to Nevada’s business than to step aside as Majority Leader?

Of course, now it makes sense. So that’s why he’s saying no “terrorists” from Gitmo come to the US. He’ll be able to tell his peeps he kept the bad guys out of the Nevada desert.
Would love to see Harry face a primary challenge. I remember how he undercut Carter when Carter ran against Ensign. And we all know what kind of leader he is.
But, here’s a thought that keeps popping up in my head. Maybe the voters aren’t really trying to purge the repubs, maybe they want to get rid of everyone who’s been in power, regardless of party. Maybe this dem sweep is an illusion. Maybe it’s just a case of ‘Throw the bums out’.
I’m up for a primary challenge. Any progressives in Nevada?
