I saw the billboard yesterday on my way past the airport: "What Will Pawlenty Choose? People of Minnesota — or — His National Ambitions?"
Well, if his veto of the compromise state budget bill is any indication, he’s definitely picking "National Ambitions" for $1000, Alex. He’d rather run up the state’s credit card another $1 billion or so than cause the rabidly nutty anti-tax movement conservatives running the Republican Party to veto his hopes of getting onto the GOP’s 2012 presidential ticket.
Then again, he’s also known for making the big woofin’ noises whilst nervously hoping somebody else does the right thing for him. This isn’t the first time he’s vetoed a funding bill; back in February of 2008 he vetoed a highway-funding bill — bare months after one of our major freeway bridges collapsed in large part because the state didn’t have the money to replace it at the time even though it was known to be in need of replacing — and the state legislature went ahead and overrode his veto, which was not a total surprise. And of course earlier this year Pawlenty was poor-mouthing Obama’s stimulus plan but didn’t turn down Minnesota’s share of the money. (Meanwhile, Pawlenty has quietly signed on to accept even more Federal stimulus money, this time for commuter rail.)
All this is by way of saying that when it comes to Smilin’ Tim Pawlenty, the slipperiest eel east of the Pecos, what sounds like a "no" or a "yes" may in fact be a "definite maybe" — and that includes what he might say or do with regard to Al Franken.

great writing, glad I clicked campaigh silo to see if you had any news, I love this stuff (and you)
What Perris said!
Thirded!
Pawlenty was one of the leading opponents of all things public transit when he was in the state House. Funny how he takes credit for the success of Jesse Ventura’s light rail line (Ventura made it happen, it was just finished on Pawlenty’s watch). And now Pawlenty can’t get fed dollars for the North Star commuter rail fast enough. Hypocrite.
You betcha. In fact, one reason he’s pulling the hardcore anti-tax stance now is because the trogdolytes that make up the party’s “purified” base hate mass transit (because of course it might help out poor people and those damn enviro-hippies) and are angry with him for doing a 180 on it, and he has to placate them somehow.
Thanks for the updates. I check daily.
I also want to say thanks for linking to my favorite local paper, The Timberjay, in a previous post. Marshall Helmberger does his homework & his paper is a great antidote to the 3 other nearest local papers which range from rightwing to nutjob rightwing. The editorials & letters to the ed in those papers drive me up a wall.
Pawlenty did get the GOP Presidential convention in his state sure Karl was trying to push the state red but Karl would never have come unless he was sure about Pawlenty.
Pawlenty has National Ambitions, Karl likes him and somebody the anti tax buys/tea baggers? has reassured Pawlenty that he need not worry about being reelected.
By the way, the Franken team has issued their response to Coleman’s appeal — and it’s a good’un.
I wonder if the Tea Baggers will get the same treatment as the Protesters did at the GOP Presidential Convention from Pawlenty?
Oh, the Tea Baggers were welcomed with open arms when they did their thing at the Capitol a couple of weeks ago. Pawlenty wuuuuuvs them!
That leaves him open to a charge of having a double standard. I don’t recall the protesters talking guns and rebellion like the Tea Baggers!
Please join our Facebook group if interested. I agree, the way out of this is to pressure Pawlenty! If we can get critical mass through various means, we can push this issue. http://www.facebook.com/group……038;ref=mf
I’m wondering if the franken team has been awarded court fees as yet
Thanks PW …. Try as Pawlenty might, he’s still outside of the Limbaugh Zone so he has little to lose by honoring his oath and abiding by the Minnesota Constitution when the MSC hands down their decision.
I’m still rooting for Palin/Bachmann 2012. Now there’s a dream ticket for democrats.
Republicans hate ‘activist judges’ except when they lose elections.
