As noted earlier this week, the length of time it takes Norm Coleman’s legal team to get around to filing their promised appeal will be indicative of whether they’re making a good-faith case or if they’re just in it to drag out the time before Al Franken can be seated in the US Senate. He has ten days to do so, and he’s used up over a third of those days already.
Over at MinnPost, David Brauer notes that, as usual, public opinion is far less supportive of the Republican stance (which in this case is "stay the course, Norm!") than are the editorial boards of Minnesota’s daily papers. One of these papers happens to be the StarTribune, whose folks Norm tangled with the other day when he stopped by their offices as part of his Schmooze The Editorial Boards drive. (Seems they ticked him off with their Kazeminy and FBI questioning.)
Meanwhile, in an echo of Norm’s efforts to get himself declared the winner before a recount could be done, we see that over in New York State’s Twentieth Congressional District, fellow Republican Jim Tedisco is trying to declare victory – and begging the judges to declare him the winner before the recount proves otherwise. (Note: The Register-Star has apparently pulled that story — one to which various sites have linked — so here’s this link instead.)

About FDL Action
the GOP is made up entirely of WATBs.
Yes, now that Tedisco is 264 votes behind, he should definitely be declared the winner. Clearly. Absolutely. Positively.

I guess Jim thinks it’s still 2000, when the guy with the most votes actually loses.
Heh!
digg a pony.
This picture is beginning to have the wallop, maybe symbolism, of Christy’s loopy pic of John McCain with what I do believe was a pointy purple hat. I could be confused it was just such a knock out…she’ll probably post is again one day for all the good times.”
Pre-emptive preemption: The watch-word of the Republican party.
Thanks, PW.
In the case of Tedisco, his team was probably ‘judge shopping’ even before the election took place, finding a nice, comfy friendly Gooper judge to present their junk to.
Tedisco filed a suit before the election was even held trying to convince the judge(s) to declare him the winner no matter what the vote count was.
Huh???
Well, duh! Can there be any question as to which?
What do the wingnut blogs say about this race?
It’s all about 60.
Being behind by 264 in a Congressional District Special Election is a sizeable amount. In addition, almost all the challenges are Tedisco challenges on absentee ballots which have been going 57%-43% in favor of his opponent.
Suddenly Tedisco is trying to prevent “Military and Overseas Ballots” from being counted? Why does Tedisco want to disenfranchise our troops?

PS Hi cinnamonape how are classes going?
You go see, I’ve had quite enough of them this week, with their teabagging and torture porn.
The Tedisco link near the end of the post appears to be broken.
they are playing for their voting bloc, the longer they can keep democats out the longer they can obstruct
people here in new york are actually starting to blame obama for not doing anything on the economy
we won’t have franken till they have no avenue left, I predict he will not be seated by the republican in charge of certifying the election, I believe he is playing for his tenurship in the cato institute not his re-election
in addition the republicans will come out full force to get him re-elected for all his obstruction
Yuh know, I’m glad, in an odd way, that MN has shown the country just how a close election is supposed to be done. NY must be feeling a lot less wiggle-room in the way they can handle the Tedisco-Murphy race. They may actually decide to do it right, just so as not to look bad nationally. With luck, we may never see another FL’00 or OH’04 again. (I can dream, can’t I?)
Hey John! This semester is going pretty smoothly although I’m going to have a deluge of grading two weeks before the Semester ends. But fortunately I foresee no external activities that will prevent me from putting in 16 hour work days for about a week ;-)
Strip-Search Sammy is waiting with his greasy paw outstretched for Norm’s request for a stay of the Minnesota Supreme Court’s expected ruling that would trigger a T-Paw signature. As the SCOTUS assigned to Minnesota, he can’t wait to show his Bush v Gore buddies that he’s a big boy now, and can play hardball just like they did.
We’ll see if Roberts honors his view.

Coleman’s an asshole, and I can’t wait for this ordeal to end and for his career to be permanently over. But do you really need to associate him with TG people and drag queens, or call him Norma as if the worst insult for a man is to be called a woman? I’ve been trying to break my 13-year-old nephew of that kind of thing.
Is there a reason for this? He once had long hair and smoked pot?
Good point. I am guilty of the same kind of behavior sometimes.
Would that be a form of tea-bagging?
I’m no fan of Coleman, but continuing to use that high school yearbook photo is just mean.
Joe, people in the DFL have fairly good information about Norm’s proclivities since back when he was a DFL’er. Probably is one reason why he became a Republican, as the DFL really hesitates to hand out endorsements for anything higher than City Council or Mayor if there is a problem that could embarass the party. Let me put it this way — I’ve known something about it since about 1994-95. Since the 1970’s the DFL has endorsed Gays and Lesbians if they are honest, out and open. Allan Spear was the first openly Gay man in the country to run for office — state senate in 1972, eventually became Chair of Judiciary and then President of the Senate. Retired, and sadly died last fall. Very active nationally in GLBT Civil Rights Organizations and efforts. The rule essentially is “out and open” and you can participate in any aspect of the DFL. But Fake Wife who lives in Hollywood and a ton of rumors that turn out to be true — that doesn’t cut it.
I have to assume that at some point, probably in the early 90’s, Norm was told clearly the “rules” and what people knew — and that many have had to do with his party switch. The point of the party is to win elections, and it certainly can accomodate honesty, but it can’t deal with candidates who fly under false flags, and if discovered can drag down more then just one candidate.
This came up initially during Paul Wellstone’s first term — the first year or two, (91-92) when Paul’s poll numbers went south, and the party began to worry — or some in the party worried. Apparently some went to the DLC and got support for trying to deny Paul the endorsement in 1996, or to primary him, and for a time their favored replacement was Coleman, then a first term Mayor. But some looked closer, and verified some of the rumors, which pretty much ended the notions of an anti-Wellstone coup. Paul’s approval picked up, and of course he ran and won in 1996. Some high in Clinton’s WH were supportive of the coup ideas. In fact at one time in 1993 for about 6 months, the Clinton led DNC established an alternative party office here in Minnesota, because the State Party was totally with Wellstone. Coleman, who had been Clinton’s Campaign State Chair ran that alternative office. I assume they backed off because of what was verified about Coleman, and because a few mature folk did what needed to be done to avoid a party circular firing squad.
Some of the same people who tried to mount a DLC financed Coup against Wellstone in 96 showed up last year in the party opposition to Franken. Not all the opposition came from that circle, but part of it did. They may be able to, in the end, influence a few thousand votes — but Franken would have won with sufficient margin had they not tried to screw the pooch last summer, after the endorsement phase was complete. And in 2006 they attempted something of the same thing against Keith Ellison during the fall campaign.
Joe, I was going to respond but Sara beat me to it. :-)
Actually, I’m not implying that Norm’s a drag queen (much less that being one is The Absolutest Worst Ickiest Worse Than OMG Hitler! Thing One Could Be), so much as I’m making a visual pun. I must say that he makes a better-looking woman than does Rudy Giuliani. I’m getting a strong Veronica Lake/Frances Farmer vibe, myself.
