Barack Obama’s Labor Department needs a leader now. It’s time to end the delaying tactics. It’s time to put an end the same old conservative GOP games. The obstruction must stop.
Did the GOP really think that Barack Obama would choose an anti-labor Labor Secretary? We’ve had eight years of that. American working people deserve better.
And we deserve it right now. Hilda Solis must be confirmed.
Stand up for Hilda Solis.
You can tell the Senate to act right here.
UPDATE: MissLaura explains at the Great Orange Satan why, exactly, GOPs object to Hilda Solis, in case you weren’t clear:
This nomination is being held up because Solis is perceived as someone who will be on the side of working people if confirmed. It’s time for a vote — and for Senate Republicans to tell the American people why it’s OK to confirm a Secretary of Labor who won’t investigate mining disasters and fights overtime pay, but not one who’ll support the freedom of workers to join unions if they choose.

newt!
Yes!! Finally!!!
per prior two threads…………… never mind.
Message sent.
Done.
15th digg. And signed. Why isn’t the NEA doing this?
Signed. Thanks, Teddy.
OT, did you thank DiFi for at least saying the right things about the stimulus this morning in the Senate?
FunnyD
Elaine Chao hated Labor but she was the
beardwife of the Senior Senator fromBig BusinessKentucky, so it kida came naturally.Maybe HHS should be headed by someone who hates doctors and medicine. Give Commerce to Maynard G. Krebs. Give Defense to Pete Seeger. We’ll give Education to Dubya.
And so it goes.
Surreal, once again.
I listened to a reporter on LatinoUSA try to explain REpub opposition- she belonged to a pro-labor organizationa and they think she will be “too pro-labor.”
How do they even have the nerve to come up with this s__t?
And what ever happened to the principle that the president should have the cabinet members he wants????
(aargh – the problem with google – all I’m finding are recent articles about Obama’s cabinet)
Yup. It’s time to move on this — now!
I could have sworn I heard her say that she doubted the Bill was going to work and they couldn’t just count on her vote? I was wide awake but distracted.
Difi that is…
Thanks to everyone for the Diggs and signatures!
(Funny story — at a blogger conference I attended in December, during the around-the-room introductions, we were asked to state our name, where we blogged, and three words that describe us well. People had some really good thoughts, like “Activist, blogger, mother” and “Lesbian, funny, topical.” I chose “Complains About Everything.” Which is a long way to answer your question: I didn’t call to thank DiFi, since I didn’t want to tie up the phoneline and block a complainer who might want to get through! But you are right, we should reward good behavior. But — talk is cheap, as she’s proven before.)
HMMMM!
That’s easy…The People elected a Democrat to the whitehouse and a bunch of Democrats into congress and the Senate. And, duh, The People don’t know what’s best for them when they don’t vote for Rethuglicans!
sheet. Dees pipples is making me loco!
FunnyD
But, still must reward good behavior, lest our own talk be cheep!
XXOO
FunnyDiva
what’s wrong with complaining about everything when there’s so darn much to complain ABOUT?!!
I signed. The Rs probably think she doesn’t even have a green card. What stupid idiots!
Oh, heck, someone liveblogged it this morning in one of Jane’s threads. Between 9 and 10am PST, I think.
FunnyD
Paging Edward Teller/Phil Munger! ET, phone your Blog (2nd) home!
FunnyD
Petition signed.
And I signed up to help plan a series of recess visits to Congress critters that’s set for next week.
Time to gear up again. The never-ending campaign…against Repub lies!
Here’s what I’m hearing when the right wingers talk:
“Oink oink oin, but her brother’s cousin’s next door neighbor didn’t pay his taxes! Oink Oink Oink”
Sick of it. “The No Party” needs to disband now to save our country!
How dare you bring that here! How dare you distract the fine people of AlLASka from work that needs to be done?
I hear wingnut talk like
I believe in the free market.
I believe in open shops.
The union bosses decide what they want, not the workers.
(I don’t know why wingers have a problem with that concept, but they do.)
You can’t get a job at certain companies if you aren’t a member of the union! (well, then take some of that freedom and get a job at a non union shop!)
I was there in that thread, but what I understood certainly was different. I was simply curious if anyone else heard it that way.
Has the NEA heard from their members about their interest in the importance of this?
Yep. Lots of oinking. LOL
Another Bush/Rove Administration legacy: the optional subpoena. “Please Appear” never before came with a question mark appended to it — now all subpoena seem optional.
Andy Stern reminds me of a working-class Steve Martin.
Sorry!
Signed and Dugged. Thanks for pushing this.
They’ve heard from me, but there are a surprising number of conservative teachers. They don’t risk losing members, I guess.
Oh my God She supports labor and not the Employers what sacrilege! Freaking Repukes are never going to want labor to have any say in the workplace! Sounds like slavery to me, must be the old Southern strategy of years gone by. Unions made the middle class possible and the Repukes hate that they have to share the wealth with labor! This is nothing but class warfare dressed up to look like something else.
New post: Emptywheel says Howard Dean for HHS Secretary
I’m such a fan of Andy Stern; I first heard him keynote-speak several years ago in San Francisco to the annual fundraising luncheon of a civic leadership organization I consulted with at the time. It was much fun watching our city’s Chamber of Commerce types squirm as Andy delivered his 21st century message about work, the workplace, and workers. He is (and I understate) a pistol.
There’s nothing new under the sun, really.
I finished reading Capitol Men last night for our Book Salon tomorrow at 5pm eastern — let me tell you, Karl Rove and William Rehnquist learned their voter suppression tactics by reading about how Reconstruction was rolled back twelve years after the Civil War. It was stunning to read the techniques used to drastically shrink black-majority states’ voting rights; some congressional districts went from hundreds of thousands of black voters to a handful, overnight, as “understanding” clauses, poll taxes, onerous residency requirements, heritage tests (”did your daddy live here?”) and other targetted tests were applied.
I signed too and I would bet she doesn’t have a green card.
Why should she need one if she’s an American citizen? I don’t have one either.
Thanks, Teddy. Signed it.
