It’s almost kinda sad, watching Norm Coleman commit political suicide on the apparent orders of his Republican minders. Here he is, a guy who switched parties and later cultivated Karl Rove and Dick Cheney so he could skip merrily up the political ladder all the way to the White House, being made to end his political career not with a bang or a whimper, but with the metaphorical tossing of battery acid into the collective faces of Minnesota residents.
If he’d been allowed to concede once the recount was done, he might have had a chance of starting a comeback in 2010 by running against Lori Swanson, the increasingly unpopular State Attorney General; it would be a good fit for him, as he spent seventeen years (1976-1993) in the State Attorney General’s office, serving as the state’s chief prosecutor and solicitor general under Warren Spannaus and Skip Humphrey. But with his truly Calvinballed contest of the recount, he’s pretty much queered any future attempts by him at electoral politics. Even some conservatives, like blogger Matt Lewis, see this. (Coleman might, if it’s still open once he’s finished wasting the time of the three-judge contest panel and/or the Minnesota Supreme Court, have a shot at being RNC Chair, but he’d need for all the other candidates for the job to take each out before this could happen.)
But Norm still soldiers on, spending money like water on his Hordes o’ Lawyers on this race. Meanwhile, it looks like his other legal expenses might be growing again, too: The Texas Kazeminy lawsuits are in the news again, with word that the defendants are trying to get the case put on hold for at least two months — which is about the length of time that the Coleman contest is likely to exist. Meanwhile, Harry Reid may actually show a spine and dare John Cornyn to try and block the seating of Franken. (Yeah, right.)

Buh-bye, Norm.
And — Harry Reid, spine? Surely you jest.
And we haven’t heard the last of the Nasser Kazeminy bit yet either.
You’d think Norm would have enough to be doing.
I think there are a lot of Democratic fingers that are crossed as the Republican Circular Firing Squad assembles.
Boy, would I love to see Hang-Dog Harry MAKE Cornyn FILIBUSTER.
No more of this “nanny, nanny, boo, boo, we’re going to filibuster” by the Republicans, causing the Dems to quake in terror. Make the MFs bring in the cots and the phone books [to read]. Let them endure C-SPAN and the MSM Evening News featuring their tomfoolery.
Why let them get the “benefit” of this merely by threatening? Make ‘em pay.
But that would be impolite.
Thanks PW.
Where is Coleman getting the money for a Recount the RNC?
isn’t the rnc helping fund him?
PW!
Hmm, 7 comments and 15 Diggs. How did that happen–have the Lurkers risen up and gone Digg-crazy? Good for them.
not to mention uncivil.
hey neuro – where ya been? i had to open the digg on thers’ post downstairs
True but without Al and Burris how can Reid get anything done in the Senate?
The GOP then will get the blame for blocking everything but Reid will get nailed for not getting them both seated.
Harry is part of the Dem leadership I’m sure he made known that did not want a special election.
Doesn’t Fitz have him on tape saying not one of the Illinois African Americans can hold the seat. Where he got that idea I don’t know but the DLC should fire their poll guy.
Anyway without a special election we are stuck with Burris and with that tape we have Harry dead to rights to blame for this mess.
Plus the GOP plan to use the same thing Harry used not to seat Al.
I think we can sink Harry, but Harry by being a lousy card player might tank the economy by not getting the stimulus passed.
OTOH, short of President, an office he is unlikely to attain, the most respect Coleman will ever have in this particular life is as a member of the US Senate.
He is staring at a life as ‘less than Senator.’ Must scare the crap out of him.
hi, suzanne–I wandered away during a slow moment at the Lake to check out some Rudeness, which I hadn’t done for a while, and had a bit of a Digging frenzy over there. thanks for covering for me.
I hope once Coleman realizes his political career is over, that he donates his haircut to the Smithsonian…
I hope so I want them to spend money take out loans and then when the economy goes bust cause Harry can’t get the stimulus package passed the GOP will see their funding dry up.
Both from wealthy contributors having financial problems, lawsuits over war profiteering and mercs (goodbye blackwater cash) Wallmart having less cash as the workers unionize.
And of course the idea that the Dems the Lefty Dems that is will emerge stronger as Harry gets taken down and the GOP gets the blame not for shutting down the government but from shutting down the country.
After all who wants to give money to a political party that is increasingly likely to lose the next election?
The perks – he will claw out his mothers eyes to keep them. Nothing is over as long as you’re a Gooper.
Don’t forget his TV debate with that British member of the House of Commons. Coleman is a lousy prosecutor as Christy would say, but he is fun to watch!
Does anyone have tape of that I think every Norm post should have a link to that for entertainment value.
We need to make sure the GOP never forgets what a hack he is.
My brother in smackdown, George Galloway.
(RealPlayer link)
After all Karl likes him Karl did move the GOP Presidential Convention to his state to help him.
I think he’s Karl’s special friend. I expect Karl to do some trickery to save Coleman but at this time only the Supremes can save him.
He is one of our bests at the Smackdown!
Harry Reid is so useless he’s more than likely to try and seat Coleman rather than Franken.
What ever happened to that Coleman scandal where somebody was buying him and his wife clothes like he was Sarah Palin?
I am sure Harry is capable of coming up with some lame rationalization for doing that…e.g. “Senatorial Courtesy” like he gave convicted felon Ted “Toobz” Stevens…
He already seated Joe Lieberman. I wonder if Harry will defect to the GOP with Joe if he loses his Senate Leader job?
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
cartoon up at the mothership
Not only was it a smackdown, Galloway threw Coleman out of the ring!
Didn’t Joe say something like Reagen said about the Democratic Party leaving him?
Again if we have that clip every post about Joe should have that and well…there are so many other clips to choose from.
what would it take to have Feingold Senate Leader? Who is ahead of him in party gravitas?, clout, integrity?
I have resolved to start wearing my Obama/Franken button again. Egad. Half a year ago i would not have believed that my opinion of Normie-wormie could dredge itself any deeper. But hey, i’m flexible, i can change my opinions, and my contempt has gone from mere to an abysmal depth.
NPR’s reporting of the recount hijinks makes the listener believe that Coleman is quite justified in his legal battle for the seat.
How will Sunstein get any nudging done with media resources like NPR that are Right-Wing Propaganda outlets? All the liberal reporters and managers were fired and replaced with Rove-bots many years ago.
NPR – NicePoliteRepublicans. I refuse to listen to ‘em.
Harry Reid’s spine was last seen cowering under a senate table.
Term Limits.
Limit the damage to one term
Here is hoping that Reid is someday (soon) replaced as the majority “leader” since he doesn’t.
Reid was quoted as saying “We’re just going to do it when it’s necessary”, with regard to seating Franken. This suggests to me that the Congressional leadership sees the Franken election as a sure thing, and does not wish to expend political capital or risk setting new precedent in a legal process in order to hurry things along. Unless they need his vote at some point.
Notice how, in that video, that Galloway never once takes his eyes off of Coleman. He’s not reading from notes, he’s “live”! He lays out his whole case from memory without stumbling, stuttering, or misplacing a word, staring down Coleman the whole time.
That was perhaps the greatest performance in a testimony before Congress ever. Our politicians should take public speaking lessons from their Brit counterparts. How I wish we had a version of “Prime Minister’s Questions” in the US!
Pathetic photoshopped piece for this blog…surely with all the teriffic PSD artists out there (I am one) you can create a more interesting image then the one above…other then that, I love this site and all the FDL related sites…thanks!
Asking for a spine from Harry Reid is asking way too much. It would make for great theatre.
Norm regrets he is leaving politics to spend more time with his loan officer.
I have often remarked the same thing-WHY can’t we have a version of PM questions? Can you IMAGINE GW attempting to answer ex temporaneously ? WHEW,that would be must see TV,for sure!
Alas, one CANNOT substitute a wishbone for a backbone.
Karl is joined at the lip to Coleman’s GOP BFF[Best friend forever], FLS-DCI. You know, Jeff Larsen of Minneapolis. The FLS-DCI folks share an office and also rented their DC home basement to Coleman. They are also the group who bought Palin those fancy duds at Neiman’s.( SAME place Kamerski purchased threads for Normie.) Check out the website of FLS-DCI . There’s a personal endorsement of this GOP dirty tricks -r- us firm by none other than…Turdblossom hisself-Karl Rove.Incidentally, Tom Synhorst[he’s the S in FLS], was a founding member of Gov.tech. That was the IT firm founded by Mike Conell. Remember him? The GOP IT wunderkind whose plane crashed in OHIO,just before Christmas…days before he was scheduled to spill the beans on the voter fraud in Ohio in 2000 and 2004?
