Actually, Coleman’s wife has been estranged from him at least since he became senator six years ago. She just shows up during election season as a prop (hence my earlier comment). Heck, this election Coleman actually ran a commercial where they weren’t on the same set, they were green-screened into the same room.

IANAL but my understanding is the recount contributions fit the definition of campaign contributions and I think campaign contributions have been ruled as acceptable for pols to use to pay for criminal defense.

In fact, I understand that Don Young, Toobz Ted, Larry Craig, and a number of the others under investigation or indictment the last few years have spent more of the contributions on lawyers and legal defense than on their campaigns.

I don’t think he can use Recount-Contest money to pay for a personal criminal lawyer (actually lawyers) for the bribe investigation.

Actually, I suspect the special court will ask him to put up bond for the contest covering court costs. Very appropriate as I gather the budget cuts are coming in part out of the hide of the Court System. Up till now, the Recount was at State Expense — though apparently both sides spent about two million each on recount attorneys which is a campaign cost — but the Contest is at the expense of the one who brings it. What if Norm can’t post a bond?
