Looked at objectively, Norm Coleman doesn’t have a case to contest the results of the recount that dislodged him from his Senate seat. Any suit he could file is going to cost him a few million just for his own lawyers — and should he lose, which is extremely likely verging on lead-pipe cinch, he has to pay court costs as well. Furthermore, while he pursues such a suit, Minnesota is down a senator unless Box Turtle Cornyn decides not to follow through on his threat to block Franken from being seated without Tim Pawlenty’s signature on the certificate issued by the state canvassing board Monday.
He’s been under mounting pressure to concede. The local news media and bloggers have been pointedly reminding Coleman of his November 5th statement that, were he behind in the vote count (as Franken was at the time), he would concede. Walter Mondale has urged him to concede. The editorial staff of the Worthington Daily Globe, which endorsed Coleman, congratulated Franken on his win and subtly rebuked Coleman for being a jerk and not conceding. Even Arne Carlson, a former Republican governor, has all but begged Norm to concede.
So what does Norm do? He files an election contest:
Speaking to supporters and reporters at the State Office Building in St. Paul, Coleman said that “a true, accurate and valid result” was more important than resolving the two-month-old disputed election soon. “Something greater than expediency is at stake,” he said. “This is not just about me.”
No, it’s about your being under orders from the national Republican party leadership to keep grasping at even the pretense of winning back your seat, just because you can. Even if it means enlisting the aid of Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal to attack and smear honest judges on its editorial page, saying things the editors know better than to utter in actual news articles. Even if it means throwing more millions into a furnace in a battle you will lose.
The eventual reward for blowing a few million more of your dough on Fritz Knaak and Tony Trimble and their staffs? Uncertain at this point, though Coleman’s name has come up as a possible Republican National Committee chair — which is somewhat laughable, as Norm doesn’t give orders, he takes them. If he became RNC chair, he’d be the figurehead for some other group, though who that group would be is unknown right now — Norm’s original patrons, the Bush/Rove/Cheney crew, are all in the process of being scapegoated for Republican failures and thus run out of town. Still, I wouldn’t feel too sorry for him — I mean, Laurie Coleman still has her Blo-N-Go empire, right?

What surprises me is the financial aspect. Norm’s facing a serious criminal probe, I didn’t think he’d be so willing to go deep into debt on a lost cause. I wonder if his party bosses and big money donors have promised to take care of him for doing this. Unfortunately, Norm may not realize that the GOP doesn’t stick by its losers. Once this is over I suspect he’s going to find the going rather lonely, even having to pay for his own suits (unless he becomes a resident of the Gray Bar Hotel, that is). Especially in this climate, when even the big money GOP bagmen are facing financial ruin.
This is the last desperate acts of a sad, discredited politician who knows his career is over. He looked quite defeated in his press conference, even with his wife prop there for “support”.
Ah poor Normie.
Too bad he felt the need to be all sanctimonious and sh*t after the election. Them words do tend to come back and bite the a**.
Norm’s a Republican. It is his lot in life to be a twit.
And he’s very professional at it. Bet he’s as good a doctor as Frist, too.
I can’t imagine who would want to contribute to his fund for doing a challenge.
He does video diagnosis?
Excellent points that he is bought and sold by the party big dogs, who I think are just dragging it out to fuck up the first weeks of the Obama presidency.
What a bunch of weak, pitiful people!! Republicans of this sort are disgusting for their egocentrism, gamesmanship, and mendacity.
Oh he wasn’t always a member of the Grand ol’ Party. It took some local hockey dudes (Sperling, Naegele…etc.) to talk him into it. After all, he did bring hockey back!
I’m sure he would if you asked nicely :)
I really think this is all about just creating distractions as part of the attempt to keep Obama from getting a good start in actually governing. It isn’t for Norm and they don’t think they’ll win.
I think Norm is finished. Conservatives don’t like him, and he’s lost to a pro wrestler and Stuart Smalley, and only ever became Senator by beating a dead man. He’s physically the most unappealing politicians his age I’ve ever seen. And I think that the decent Minnesota Republicans are sick of him too. Carlson isn’t a Republican any more, but Heffelfinger ditched him and Pawlenty has been covering his own ass.
I’d be happy to see him on the RNC, though. He’ll bring the stink of defeat with him.
And yeah, his bribery case. Forgot that.
The only thing weaker and more pitiful than Republican scum is the Democratic “leadership” in Congress.
Just to be contrarian for a moment, I read that Coleman sent out a fundraising appeal yesterday. Seems to me it’s a little soon to get back big feedback, so how much of today’s presser was to try to gin up the money people?
And yeah, that bribery case…
I can see a big push to bring in big bucks this week falling flat and Normie having a seeming moment of selflessness by withdrawing the lawsuit. He’s counting on money coming in for the criminal case, not the election case.
This isn’t about winning the election. Or winning the court case. Just stall and delay.
Stick a fork in him, he’s done. Stale toast.
Sounds like Normie is gonna need big bucks to pay for this court case on the election AND for the bribery case as well.
I think we’ve already seen signs that the Rs aren’t real happy having their contributions go to lawyers and court cases.
Is Blo’n’Go really worth that much money that he can take on two high profile court cases simultaneously?
Only if Laurie can get the Sham-Wow guy to shop it for royalties….
I don’t think he can use Recount-Contest money to pay for a personal criminal lawyer (actually lawyers) for the bribe investigation.
Actually, I suspect the special court will ask him to put up bond for the contest covering court costs. Very appropriate as I gather the budget cuts are coming in part out of the hide of the Court System. Up till now, the Recount was at State Expense — though apparently both sides spent about two million each on recount attorneys which is a campaign cost — but the Contest is at the expense of the one who brings it. What if Norm can’t post a bond?
“This is just not about me.” Hahahahaha! I went to school with Norman and if it isn’t just about him, it will be the first damn time.
Digg is open for you to show your support for the Lake. So go DIGG IT!
PW: I like this graphic much better than the hourglass.
Coleman is an ugly man. He’s talking tough to prove to his young wife what a MAN he is. She will leave him shortly.
Man’s a total loser.
IANAL but my understanding is the recount contributions fit the definition of campaign contributions and I think campaign contributions have been ruled as acceptable for pols to use to pay for criminal defense.
In fact, I understand that Don Young, Toobz Ted, Larry Craig, and a number of the others under investigation or indictment the last few years have spent more of the contributions on lawyers and legal defense than on their campaigns.
Don’t those big, plastic tooth veneers do anything for him?
I never get tired of posting links to Normy’s public depantsing by George Galloway, but this one has the added succulence of rubbing Christopher Hitchens’ face in his own private sheetpile.

Actually, Coleman’s wife has been estranged from him at least since he became senator six years ago. She just shows up during election season as a prop (hence my earlier comment). Heck, this election Coleman actually ran a commercial where they weren’t on the same set, they were green-screened into the same room.
