holiday-hourglass.thumbnail.JPGYammering by Box Turtle Cornyn aside, the Republicans know there’s not much that can be done to keep Al Franken from being sworn in as Minnesota’s next Senator, once he’s certified as the winner of the race.  (See the history of Mary Landrieu’s 1996 Senate win for further details.)  In fact, as HuffPo’s Sam Stein notes, conservatives are already starting to face the reality of a Senate without Norm Coleman in it:

In a filing on the conservative website, NewsMax.com, author David A. Patten looked at the numbers and saw in them a Coleman-less Senate.

The counting of improperly rejected absentee ballots will probably increase Democratic challenger Al Franken’s lead over incumbent GOP Sen. Norm Coleman according to a new analysis of voting trends, effectively relegating Coleman to filing lawsuits considered unlikely to reverse the outcome of the election.

This is what most of us Dirty Freakin’ Hippies have been saying all along: Franken will win, Coleman will sue, Coleman will lose. Despite the howls from the Coleman camp, their seemingly endless capacity for nuisance suits, the efforts to smear a videojournalism outfit that’s been named one of America’s top ten websites by the Center for Public Integrity, Norm Coleman will lose, and Al Franken will win. It’s really that simple. Sit down, crack a cold one, and savor the moment as Coleman’s people, the RNC, and the entire conservative movement lose their collective minds at the prospect.

In the meantime, you could do a lot worse than following the recount via The UpTake, which has been described by local smarty-pants MinnPost.com writer David Brauer as "the MPR [Minnesota Public Radio] of citizen journalism". That’s a compliment, by the way. Feel free to send them coin, if the spirit moves you so.
