I really hate the jokes about the recount “taking forever”. It would end today, only two days late, if it weren’t for the Coleman lawsuits. It was scheduled to be done in a careful, deliberate way, and it was. A lot of the Florida mess was, more than anything else, the result of the bogus urgency pushed by the media and by the Republicans who wanted to stop the recount. (That’s what decided the Supreme Court — there were only four Republican tools in place, and that’s what they convinced Kennedy with.)

For God’s sake, the US could limp along with 99 Senators indefinitely, if it came to that. And recounts are boring, sure, but they’re not intended as entertainment.

No one seems to understand how small the margin is, either: 0.002%, it seems. The cut off for an automatic recount is 0.5%, or about 15,000 votes. 40 votes is something like 1/400 of that.

Most of the “stolen election” disinformation seems to come from John Lott. Here are some convenient links refuting him.

I think that knocking down the stolen election meme is worth doing. There really aren’t a lot of grey areas; it’s been a good count. A lot of the Franken haters are intellectually on a par with Wichita Falls Cowboys fans tweaking on meth, but I’ve found that some of them can be convinced. (Powerline has been a lot less creepy than usual on this.)

but–but–but–Coleman has to win! It’s his seat! So what if Franken gets a few more ballots than Norm, that is just the result of all the Chaos and Confusion and Agony inflicted by the dirty Democrats and their evil lawyers, and those judges legislating from the bench! It’s just not fair!
