Caroline Kennedy (and her staff) provided answers to fifteen questions posed by The New York Times. These questions and the answers serve as an excellent platform surrogate, and should probably be answered by anyone else seeking Governor David Paterson’s appointment to the seat likely to be vacated by Secretary of State-designate Hillary Rodham Clinton. New Yorkers deserve at least a basic understanding of the positions on critical issues held by those who would represent them in the United States Senate.
Here are some highlights of the Q&A with Caroline (full story here):
Q. Does she support state or federal legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage?
A. Caroline supports full equality and marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples.
Q. Would she oppose legislation that would require minors to notify a parent before obtaining an abortion?
A. Caroline believes that young women facing unwanted pregnancies should have the advice of caring adults, but this should not be required by law.
Some additional questions and answers:
Q. Do you believe that an undivided Jerusalem must be the national capital of the State of Israel?
A. Yes, Caroline believes that an undivided Jerusalem must be the national capital of the State of Israel.
Q. Do you support the auto industry bailout package passed by the House of Representatives earlier this month?
A. Yes, Caroline supports the auto industry bailout package passed by the House of Representatives earlier this month.
And, finally:
Q. Do you support a two-state peace solution for Israel?
A. Caroline supports a two-state peace solution for Israel, so long as there is a true partner for peace in the Palestinians, and so long as Israel’s security is assured.
Q. Do you support the federal Employee Free Choice Act, otherwise known as the "card-check" bill?
A. Yes, Caroline supports the federal Employee Free Choice Act.
Please take a look at all the questions and answers. For me, having a marriage equality proponent in the United States Senate would be a step forward, as neither Senator Clinton nor former Senator Obama support full marriage marriage equality. It’s great to think New York might have a Senator in a position to push the President-Elect on this issue when he takes office.
Do you think other aspirants to this office should answer these questions too?

Thanks, Teddy!
If she has the fire in the belly to stomach the Senate, more power to her. That’s my main worry about her — that she might turn out to be for NYS what Mark Dayton was for Minnesota. But if she doesn’t, well and good.
As Al Giordano points out over at The Field, complaining about her being a dynastic appointment is not exactly the best way to persuade David Paterson (who is the son of a prominent NYS Democratic politician) to avoid her.
Speaking of Al, he also talks, in the course of a piece on Gerry Ferraro’s opposition to Caroline Kennedy, about CK’s answering a set of “gotcha” questions posed by The Politico.
Thanks Tedy! To me these are very important questions and Caroline’s answers make me feel a bit better about her–now I just hopes she gets a really cool tattoo!
It’s good that she supports same-sex marriage, but not vital. A Senator has to represent broad interests and the Senate isn’t the place of origin for the change you’re advocating.
Thanks for the Ferraro update. Sorry to say she is another one who should “zip it.”
Teddy Partridge finds it odd that Caroline answers all her questions in the third person.
DUGG!
DOES this seem a bit shallow? these issues are fraught with nuance and need further explanation and………
well………
why doesn’t she just say this to US. THE US. us.???????
i want her to talk to US.
hell,
i’ve wanted that my whole life (being a few years difference to her in age).
i’d like to “know her”, in a sense, and these Q & A’s aren’t doing it for me.
just sayin…………..
Fran Drescher was on Huckabee tonight butchering the English language and saying waaaaahhhhh. Made me yearn for Palin. It repeats Sunday night at 8 on fox.
We need more progressive Democrats. Everywhere.
Read her books if you want to know about her views.

It would be good to have a constitutional scholar in the Senate.
Credit where credit is due. Princess Senator Caroline gave good answers, far better than assholes like Schumer or Emmanuel or Reid have been close to in their entire lives. Also way better than that foul, simian near retardate, Cuomo the Younger. So what if she cock blocks him because he was mean to a Kennedy subprincess? Until you show me a candidate with better answers that Patterson will also actually appoint, Princess Senator Caroline is the pick of the litter, snotty, overprivileged, arrogant bitch that she is. So what? I’m sure FDR was a dick, too.
When there’s a Q&A and they write out the A’s for ya it tends to turn out that way, eh? Still, I’d welcome someone who ok’d these responses, however second or thirdhandedly.
Q: Do you believe that 9/11 was an inside job?
A: “9/11 … So simple even a caveman could do it.”
To repeat what TobyWollin what well pointed out in the last thread:
Isn’t her entire right arm tatooed in that photo?
Because she couldn’t even be f*cking bothered to answer them herself. With each passing day, Caroline Kennedy shows herself to be more and more of a lightweight. If in these awful economic times, this is the person that New Yorkers want as Senator so be it but Caroline Kennedy reminds of cotton candy, sweet but with no substance.
Ah Oh….she is doing a Bob Dole? lots were looking to see if Grampy McCain would go down that road too….
Good Morning everyone…. How is everyone doing?
It looks like Caroline would be as reliably liberal as Uncle Ted, and that’s good enough for me.
I would also point to the brevity of the answers. These are the kind of responses you would get from a mediocre 9th grader texting the answers in.
Ted Kennedy is a lot more liberal than Barack Obama. Caroline Kennedy is about as conservative as Obama, except on a few social issues, and is much more in the DLC neoliberal Clintonesque mode.
It might help if you read the analysis in the NYT article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12…..nnedy.html
I think it would be a good thing to have a truly progressive democrat in the congress. One who doesn’t owe everybody and their uncle and can stand up for what they believe. I liked the answers given, brief or third person or not.
I find it hard to give a rats ass about the feelings of people who only ever comment in the negative here. That’s just me.
Yup, that’s fucking compelling, the NYfuckingT. Geez.
ur not serious, ru?
Looks like a tatoo to me. Isn’t it?
Where is she on trade?
What does Mr Schlossberg do for a living (he’s a wealthy “investor,” right?)
What about outsourcing????
Itz a joke from an earlier fdl posting about Princess Senator Caroline having un petit regret that she’s got a little yellow butterfly tat that looking kinda stupid and wrinkly now that she’s past fifty and the tat is itself decades old. PSC doesn’t actually have a sleeve.
“I find it hard to give a rats ass about the feelings of people who only ever comment in the negative here. That’s just me.”
Ha, not just you!
G’morning, Demi, and everyone else.
What is so fucking uncompelling are her answers. I have probably been more critical of the NYT than most around here, but that doesn’t mean they get wrong every time. In this case, they didn’t. And really you only have to see how short these answers are, that they are written because Kennedy hasn’t bothered to speak publically, and that being in the third person they aren’t even her answers, to realize how without content she is.
Then wtf is wrong with her right arm? What is on it? Or is the picture photoshopped?
Nope. She has a small one on the back of her elbow.
It’s photoshopped. Ur kinda slow this morning.
She sounds like a New York City liberal. She’ll have a tough time upstate. Her answers are carefully guarded as are those of any professional politician.
I think she’ll get the seat but will have trouble keeping it unless she finds a better way to sell herself upstate- those people are VERY different.
On Blizter the talking heads say that Caroline should give a couple of speeches & be interviewed on TV. It’s the post-Palin era they point out.
Sometimes I’m really really sloooow.
I don’t see the US congress dealing with the issue of same sex marriage anytime soon- unless the goopers press their “constitutional amendment” idea….for now it seems to be a state issue.
That elbow thing may be a myth. I think PSC may have it on her ass, though it would be irresponsible to speculate on this, since she’s a Princess Senator Designate.
I think the idea that Caroline Kennedy is some kind of closet progressive is as misplaced as the one that Barack Obama secretly is. It is all wishful thinking. There is not a shred of evidence for it. Indeed Kennedy’s silence for the last 8 years of the Bush Adminstration is the clearest evidence that she is not a progressive. Caroline Kennedy has a responsibility and duty to say where she stands on the issues, one to two sentences in writing and not even written by her on a scattering of issues is ludicrously lame. That’s not negative. That’s reality.
It was shown in a picture of her taken during the convention.
Turkish producers of the shoe thrown at Bush are getting rich. 300,000 orders have come in for that shoe since the incident. It ’s being referred to as “the Bush” shoe and everyone wants one- some call it the “Bye Bye Bush shoe”. At any rate- it’s sellin like hotcakes.
the whole fuckin’ senate is a rat pack of elitist, privileged, “special” people.
since it looks like we’re not, in fact, gonna git whitey now that obama is prez, it looks like having a kennedy in there is a good consolation.
and no one has been able to convince me that starting with caroline is the best way to set up the guillotine for the anti-revolutionary washington villagers, so i haven’t been impressed with the trashing of her desires for appointment.
i can also understand her wanting to help uncle teddy out with the family enterprise what with his brain tumor and all…
all this kinda crap weighs on the scales of which will it be, purity or progress?
it is much worse granting legitimacy to a rick warren and his weltanschauung of idiocy, hate, and delusion on the occasion of his symbolically demanding the bowed head and the bended knee to his death-praising concept of gawd…
That’s a funny fucking meme. There’s hardly anyone there, so who gives a fuck what those reich wing trogs think? They only matter for their creepy congressmen and their dopey assemblymen. They aren’t swinging shit in a state wide election – neonazi fuckwads on Staten Island and Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk do that.
If she is appointed, I would expect her to vote with the dem majority. She won’t join the Blue Dogs or hurt on a cloture vote. She’s as good as anyone else for the purpose, and she could help on some issues with her name. Teddy ain’t gonna last for ever and she would be the heir apparent.
Yup, sure, Princess Senator Caroline has a sleeve and rides a hog and does hillbilly heroin to get down with the upstaters. Brilliant. This is why the republicans can still steal elections – you have the judgment and common sense of an eleven year old boy.
Well there are a few folks in Buffalo, Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, etc.
I’m thinking that upstate has swung a few New York State elections- but maybe I’m misremembering.
Don’t know whether Caroline is qualified to be a senator and I’m not from NY. She does, however, deserve some personal respect. I have never hear of her doing anything “princess-like.” Seems to me she has gone about her life in a quiet way. She has lost a father, a mother, and a brother. She is about to lose the last remaining uncle. An uncle was assassinated.
She has done nothing to earn the scorn being heaped on her here. The Kennedy’s have given much to this country.
Yes, so let us by all means add another one, one who can’t even be bothered to run for the office. Explain to me how this is “progressive”?
Are you serious? On this logic, Paterson could look in the NYC telephone directory and find any number of Washingtons. And heck Washington is a heck of a better name than Kennedy.
We might as well just say fuck it and forget about democracy entirely if it is nothing more than a family enterprise.
If these are the standards that progressives have now, we are exactly the same as those we criticize on the whacked out right.
LHP up at the mothership
All I said was that she has a small tattoo on the back of her elbow. What the heck is wrong with you? I don’t like being referred to like that and can do without you comments.
“It” isn’t the same thing as “a small tattoo on the back of her elbow.”
The princess moniker goes to her sense of entitlement that she thinks she deserves to be a Senator with even less of a public background than Sarah Palin. And seriously, this is the site that came up with Ole Sixty Grit, WATB, and DFH. It is precisely that princess like quality that maof Caroline Kennedy that suddenly we aren’t even supposed to call her a princess. Personally I don’t undrstand this because in every other way Kennedy supporters are taking a highly monarchical approach to all this.
What on earth are you talking about? I don’t even understand where you are coming from or what you mean. She had a tattoo on her arm – what makes you go nuts over the fact that I said that?
And I was answering eCHAN question and was not talking to you.
“Q. Do you believe that an undivided Jerusalem must be the national capital of the State of Israel?
A. Yes, Caroline believes that an undivided Jerusalem must be the national capital of the State of Israel.”
Peace? The Carter two state solution? What about a solution instead of more confrontation? The Muslims relidious interests in Jerusalem as well. Undivided means exclusive not inclusive. NO MORE WAR.
that’s my reaction too.
earlier, i posted a comment about fran drescher being on huckabee’s show, repeats again tongiht at 8..
if you wanna hear someone acting entitled listen to it. makes caroline kennedy sound like an eloquent ‘old hand’ seasoned politician. and makes drescher appear to be a full-blown neocon.
Q. Do you believe that an undivided Jerusalem must be the national capital of the State of Israel?
A. Yes, Caroline believes that an undivided Jerusalem must be the national capital of the State of Israel.
Q. Do you support a two-state peace solution for Israel?
A. Caroline supports a two-state peace solution for Israel, so long as there is a true partner for peace in the Palestinians, and so long as Israel’s security is assured.
Q: How are the two questions and answers above reconcile, especially when the Palestinians lived in an undivided Jerusalem from AD 70 to about 1967?
However Drescher may sound doesn’t really change the fact that Caroline Kennedy even after these answers is running a substanceless PR campaign for the Senate spot based completely on her name. No matter how nicely it is wrapped up that still reeks of entitlement and special treatment.
she has a “staff”?
Ms Kenndy is no more qualified than any other intelligent person who inherited good name and hundreds of millions of dollars and felt noblesse oblige to do something aside from indulge in narcissism.
Without giving up her wealth and her name and her connections and getting down with the masses on the “level playing field” she is doing what comes naturally. And she’s not going to renounce her wealth and abondon her family name and ties.
She has a decent education and brain and her heart seems to be in the right place. I prefer her to Al D’Amato – elected by the people… or Charles Schumer – elected by the people, or Pat Buckley – elected by the people or even Hillary (I’m so wonerful ain’t I) Clinton – elected by the people of NYS.
This is how the game works in this country. It’s who you know, the genes you have, the money you have and the star quality you have. This gives us such talent as Sarah Palin, Ahnold, Jesse “the body” Ventura, Michael “I’m rich enough to get anything I want” Bloomberg and the list goes on and on and on.
We are not a meritocracy. No way Jose!
All wealthy people have a staff… The only thing they do for themselves is get dressed in the morning. Many don’t even shop for anything.
I think it’s a sleeve, in theory. (There ought to be a second one around somewhere. These one-sleeved outfits are really tacky-looking, like they weren’t finished in time to be worn.)
wasn’t endorsing nor defending……just adding another aspect to the pile of the entitlement-inclined lining up to be tapped on the head. watch drescher, it’ll curl your hair. you’ll see what i was trying to point out.
they haven’t posted the show yet or i would have linked it.
Again this is just a defense of an especially egregious example of rotten politics as usual. I love that everyone thinks they know where Caroline Kennedy’s heart is even thought she did and said nothing in the 8 years of the Bush Administration to let anyone know where that is. If it is OK to do this for Caroline Kennedy then we have no argument against George Bush’s or Sarah Palin’s lack of experience when they too were selected. I just don’t find this sudden “prgmaticism” consistent with progressive values. YMMV
The New York senate seat is probably the least important of those seats that need to be filled because of cabinent picks…I’d say Colorado is a hell of a lot more important. In the case of Colorado, we may actually be talking about someone who will vote 100% for the dems vs a blue dog…
Why doesn’t that pick get more attention?
This is all about the Kennedy family wanting to preserve at least a senate seat. Caroline has the best name recognition and the opportunity is in her state. She’ll probably get it.
that dress is cool
stylish one-armed dress perhaps?
I don’t think it’s a tattoo… unless it’s REALLY new, the colors wouldn’t be quite so vibrant.
Caroline has a very small tattoo on the raised arm that is visible in the original picture. I believe someone foto-shopped this one as an example for her of how it could be covered up with a more elegant tattoo.
There is nobody on the blog commenting that wouldn’t have given most of these same answers, and have been supporting those answers for alot longer. MONEY
sorry, pushed the wrong button and didn’t finish. MONEY IS THE ONLY REASON SHE IS BEING CONSIDERED. So what is new, huh.
Second that.
Maybe Ellen Alderman wrote all the answers?
I would point out that the questions by the Times are decidedly in the mode of
“leading questions”. The assume that the models and programs are the only ones possible and that one can give a “Yes” or “No” response to them. They are also very “Manhattanesque” queries. For example…what does a NY State Senator have to say in regards to whether the NY City Council agrees or not to Bloomberg being allowed to extend his term. That really has no relevance to what she would be doing as Senator…in fact it would seem to be meddling in NY City politics.
The Israel questions are clearly designed to win over or lose her support amongst the Jewish community…and essentially forces her into a corner at a time where other alternatives than those that have failed in the past must be forwarded by the Obama Administration. Folks always talk about the right-wing having certain “code words”…but phrases like “undivided Jerusalem” and “two-state peace solution” are just these sorts of mantras that need fundamental reinvestigation.
And Kennedy spouts the “code phrases” right back “true partner for peace in the Palestinians” (Hmmm! Do the Palestinians have a “true partner for peace in the Israelis?”) and “so long as Israel’s security is assured” (what about assurances to the Palestinians that their sovereignity will not be violated, in turn?”).
And one thing I found interesting was just how many questions were not even responded to. Almost half were simply ignored…not given the worthiness of a response or rationale as to why there was no response.
