Yesterday a coalition of countries called on the United Nations to urge the UN members to globally decriminalize homosexuality. Of the 192 members countries, sixty-six were signatories. Noticeably absent among Western nations: the United States. WTF?!
Where is America’s fierce moral leadership? Isn’t that the reason we went to war in Afganistan and Iraq–to right the world’s wrongs? To take support human rights? I think that’s what they were saying, along with "WMD…oil..oil..oil…"
The appeal to decriminalize homosexuality is based on the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states:
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights..Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.
Submitted to the UN General Assembly for the first time by the ambassador of Argentina, Jorge Arguello, the document supporting of the rights of gays was reads:
We urge states to take all the necessary measures, in particular legislative or administrative, to ensure that sexual orientation or gender identity may under no circumstances be the basis for criminal penalties, in particular executions, arrests or detention…condemn the human rights violations based on sexual orientation or gender identity wherever they occur…the use of the death penalty on this ground… arbitrary arrest or detention and deprivation of economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to health.

And I’ll bet this made Rick Warren’s little black heart go pitter patter…
Why is anyone surprised. The Bush maladministration has not signed anything the UN has put forward that might be …oh I dunno…actually good for people.
33 days and counting…
