Old Spice, a manly man’s cologne marketed by Proctor and Gamble, has named its Art of Manliness 2008 Man of the Year: Matthew Chancey.
Matthew Chancey is part of Vision Forum Ministries, a fundamentalist branch of Christianity which states that:
we recognize that the family—and especially fathers—are the focus of a fierce and unrelenting attack by the world, the flesh, and the Devil. This has escalated to the point that Christians must rise up in defense of the family in uncompromising biblical warfare….The abdication of God’s authority leads to unbiblical practices in the churches and to the erosion of biblical manhood and leadership. This in turn leads to the perversion of the role of women, the destruction of our children, and the collapse of our society. Traditions, which have originated in the minds of devils and fallen men, counterfeit God’s authority. False doctrines derived from Darwinism, Marxism, Feminism, Secular Humanism, Psychology, and countless other unbiblical sources, have emerged from a society that has discarded Divine Revelation and have contaminated or replaced God’s standards in many professing churches of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Homosexuality is not a victimless crime. It is a cruel moral perversion that wreaks moral, physical and spiritual havoc on men, women, children, families and institutions. The Bible makes no distinction between homosexuals, pedophiles, bestials and rapists. All are criminals, the toleration of which brings judgment on the land and devastation to children.
Proctor and Gamble was informed of Matt’s views which along with the above include believing that women should not attend college, work outside the home, or have the right to vote–I guess those attributes only seemed to make him more manly. Matt was not disqualified, and his fellow fundies voted for him enough times that he won the marketing scheme. But he and his pals may have to answer to a Higher Authority, since Vision Forum Ministries states:
We deny that God’s people should treat His Word as inadequate for church and family life by supplementing His completed revelation with humanistic psychology, corporate business models, and modern marketing techniques.

Oh. my. god.
Thanks Lisa.

More economical fundies lump them all together as “modernity.”
I haven’t read a better argument for atheism (and I consider myself a believer).
Chilling. Chanceys positions are medieval!
If you look at the product list and sponsorship relations that P&G has I can’t understand why they would pick this guy- they don’t appear to be so right wing. Just one example – They sponsor soap operas that present relatively modern views on equality/orientation/divorce/sex outside of marriage issues.
It only took a few minutes to post a complaint using the link you provided (thanks), and the P&G website has a list of their products to avoid – helpful.
I’ve emailed friends & family this link & the link to P&G, & the link to P&Gs product list. So far received emails from 5 people that they have contacted P&G and forwarded along the info to their f&f.
