Nothing like a GOP cat fight:
Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski has some Republican-to-Republican advice for Gov. Sarah Palin: If you want to make a run at the White House, keep your hands off my Senate seat.
Murkowski, up for reelection in 2010, is nervously awaiting word on whether John McCain’s former running mate will run against her in the GOP primary. But she says Palin is the one who should be nervous.
“I can guarantee it would be a very tough election,” Murkowski said in an interview.
Palin is also up for reelection in 2010. She could run for a second term as governor, but the Senate holds some obvious attractions: a national platform, and with it the chance to beef up a thin résumé and rebuild damaged credibility on foreign policy and other issues.
But Murkowski says a run against her would be fraught with risk. If Palin lost, her stock would drop just ahead of a potential 2012 presidential run. And if she won, she’d be a backbencher in a chamber that is dominated by seniority — and would have to begin her presidential campaign as soon as she took office.
“If she wants to be president, I don’t think the way to the presidency is a short stop in the United States Senate,” Murkowski said.
Palin still holds an 80% approval rating among Alaska Republicans. But Tina Fey was spot on when observed Palin was "not goin’ back to Alaska" — she hasn’t been there since last August. (As Liddy Dole learned, that can be problematic come election time.)

All I’m saying is, Murkowski doesn’t want to be seen wearing a moose costume.
Do I sense a rope-a-dope? Is it possible that Senator Murkowski is hoping Simple Sarah can be lured into her corner? I don’t know anything about her, but the chances are great she’s not as dumb as the gubernator, so she cannot be too happy to see that twit on their national ticket. Maybe she thinks a Senate campaign is just the tool to let the helium out of the Palin balloon. For me, I’m with all the righteous rightwing knuckle-draggers on this one; I’m more than happy to see that moron as the face of the Republican party.
Or wolf, at least if there are any planes or helicopters handy.
She comes from a prominent political family in the state, so she is bound to have a good grasp of state politics. Little Sarah has pissed off a number of people there, including a number of Republicans. Wonder where Murkowski stands in those feuds?

I do not think she is significantly different from other leaders from the social conservative right. You may be right about Jeb, but I would rather have Palin than him or Huckabee running against us. Both of them are smarter and better politicians. Palin is pure small town politics, which plays well with the “base,”* but really does not translate to national level politics. You do not win elections with 25-30% of the electorate.
* By “base”, I refer to the subterranean troglodyte swamp dwellers infesting the sewer swamps of the far right.

Palin, however, despite her intellectual deficits and just plain odd style has one advantage: we do not know what the political landscape will look like in ‘12. And with that, with the lowest possible approval rating imaginable, I give you George W. Bush in ‘04.
I do not trust the electorate do make that distinction, despite their semi-return to sanity in ‘08. I simply do not trust us.
One can only pray (or whatever motiviational) enlightenment?

Oh, I think that Sarah either appalls or scares the shit out of most Americans (the polling data certainly indicate that). She only appeals to a narrow segment of the electorate and her appeal is unlikely to ever extend much beyond that. Huckabee, who appeals to that same demographic, has much great appeal to other demographics as well and would be a much more serious challenge in the future. Either way, it looks like the social conservatives have the upper hand in the party (they have always had the numbers, but have now seized the power as well).

Palin is like watching a train wreck, I suppose. I’ve never seen one for real. But none of us can stop watching her, she has a creepy draw.
How this plays out in her next election is anyone’s guess.
I don’t agree. I don’t see magic, but my problem is that I don’t see as much stink on her as I would like.

Substantively, should we care whether it’s Murkowski or Palin? What’s the diff?
For Senate? I think Palin is better for the Dems. I think she would be easier to beat than Murkowski, who seems more competent.
So why would the Republican county attorney and Sheriff Joe wait until the election of a Republican County Supervisor was certified…… WHY wasn’t this released during the election…… something smells rotten in Maricopa County….

I am not sure exactly how competent Murkowski is, but he has been well trained and advised by her father and she is the incumbent, which makes it harder for the Dems than if they go up against Palin. I say let Palin knock her off in the primary (if she can, no sure thing).

Let me put this into a perspective even a Young Republican can understand.
Alaska has a total population that is less than the city of San Jose California.
Most of the population is centered in just a few small cities.
The male to female ratio is two to one.
They have winters that last six months, very cold winters.
All Palin had to do was put up pin up posters advertising that she was running for Governor.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but:
Jon Tester can win in Montana, partly because he is a farmer.
McCaskill can win in Missouri partly because she is a prosecutor.
And Palin can win in Alaska because, well, she is part of Alaskan culture. Moose dressing, snow-machine-racing hubby, oil-company-pandering (behind her back of course), and cute.
Smarts are not part of the cultural equation. They might help, but that’s not mandatory, any more than Lynn Westmoreland needs them to win.

there is a lot to say in favor of a candidate being ‘one of us’ – that if he knows firsthand the hardships of his constituents in addition to the joys, he will represent to ease the first and increase the second.
