Think Progress reports that Senator Carper of Delaware is thinking about slapping his old friend Lieberman on the hand. Say it isn’t so.
Hope the return of Ted Kennedy to the Senate will help these folks find some courage.
Today in an interview with the Hill, Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE) said that Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) should be punished for his attacks on Barack Obama during the campaign season. “There need to be consequences, and they cannot be insignificant,” Carper said.
More from The Hill:
Carper, a fellow centrist who was Delaware campaign chairman for Lieberman’s failed bid for president in 2004, said he and many other Senate Democrats are disappointed and even angered by their colleague’s sometimes-inflammatory rhetoric during this year’s presidential campaign.
[snip]
Carper did not rule out stripping Lieberman of his coveted gavel running the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, or imposing other sanctions like taking away seniority on other committees or a subcommittee on Armed Services.
Carper said he and three other Senate Democrats have been making phone calls to "take the temperature of our caucus." He said the purpose of the calls was not to lobby senators for any particular action for or against Lieberman, but "just to see where people’s hearts and their minds are.”
[snip]
Carper said he was "not sure" how Lieberman would react to tough penalties, and said Lieberman will have to make his case before his Democratic colleagues at a closed-door meeting Tuesday.
Wow, tough talk. Let’s see some action, folks:
Just Say No to Joe right here.

Thanks egregious. I just got off the phone with Carper’s DC office. Thanked them for the Senator’s comments against JoeLie.
just called my senators again (kerry and kennedy). neither of them has made a statement indicating how they plan to vote. but kerry’s office did ask for my zipcode, which means that they are counting calls – a good sign I hope.
Carper said he and three other Senate Democrats have been making phone calls to “take the temperature of our caucus.”
I suggest you use this handy little device,

Thanks Egregious. Carper’s been Holy Joe’s Senate Buddy, introducing legislation that furthered Joe’s interests. I’ve said that both Lieberman and McCain broke the rule of collegiality in the campaign by impugning Obama’s character and patriotism, and that, in the strange world of the Senate, is beyond the pale.
Boxers phone is jammed & her voice box full. DiFink is a lost cause, though I emailed them both.
You are so bad “G”
Who cares? How Lieberman would react should not be a factor in the decision. It is not as if having him caucus with the Republicans will turn over control of the Senate and the “filibuster proof majority” is a fantasy. The Dems would never vote unanimously, breaking or preventing a filibuster will always require persuading some Republican senators not to vote with their party.
Always helpful to thank folks when they move in the right direction.
That’s right. There’s blue dogs and fourteen gangers in them hills. I wonder if Obama is still refusing Liebershit’s phone calls.
Removing Joseph Lieberman from the Chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee would be an act of extreme pettiness, unbefitting the new political environment which President-elect Obama wishes to create. Sen. Lieberman’s demonstration of loyalty and friendship to John McCain are virtues to be desired, not disparaged. Hopefully the majority of the members of the Steering and Outreach Committee feel the same way.

Dangerstein?
Is that you?
LOL!!
ooo it’s the Let Joe Stay people. Or person. Come out, we’ll be nice. I’m the original warm blanket and hot cocoa person here — welcome.
ha
Smells like [dangerstein] to me, but give it hot cocoa and a blanket anyway….
Might it be the member of the “Connecticut for Leiberman” Party?
I don’t think folks have any problem at all (well not as much of one anyway) with Short Ride’s ‘friendship’ with McCain. The Senate is a small club and many of the long time members are friends across the aisle
I’m not a fan of Ted Stevens but do understand somewhat why Daniel Inouye supported him.
But Lieberman, in his insulting and disparaging remarks about how Obama might not be a patriot or might be a traitor, THAT, in and of itself is quite a strong justification for removing his Oversight Committee gavel. Especially when combined with his refusal to follow through on promises to actually perform oversight of the Bush admin in order to win his re-election in ‘06.
Is there a Connecticut Against Lieberman party?
I sent Barbara Boxer an e-mail. I’m hoping she will do the right thing. She don’t take no mess, usually.
Where do I sign?
He never questioned Senator Obama’s patriotism – he questioned his experience. I may disagree with him on that, but the election is over. If you don’t like him, tell Ned Lamont to run again in 4 years. removing him from his chairmanship positions would be a petty move and is not going to resonate well with anyone out of the base.

Yes. But in true Orwellian fashion, it is actually called “Connecticut for Lieberman.”
It seems that Short Ride didn’t take care of things like party rules so some folks who were not supporters took over the party and made it so that he can’t get the nomination in ‘10.
So when Lieberman was saying “Obama hasn’t always put his country first” that wasn’t questioning his patriotism, only his experience.
R-i-i-i-g-h-h-h-t.
707 !
Kerry and Kennedy’s offices can be reached. it requires holding on for 10 or so rings.
i think people outside the base can understand it. it’s really not so hard to understand. if anything, letting him keep an important chairmanship is hard to understand.
o/t
you still here darlin’? have you seen this today ?
Patriot Boy comes out . . . as a Mormon . . . now leaving the Church
Is that you Joe?
Sen. Nelson’s office is declaring an official “no comment” statement… barely even took my message, wankers.
oo “petty” – we wouldn’t want to be petty to someone who openly worked to elect candidates from the other party, now, would we?
On the campaign trail Lieberman repeatedly said the Obama did not want to “win the war in Iraq, but McCain did.” Lieberman went into his explanation that withdraw from Iraq would mean the US would lose the war and McCain, willing to stay indefinitely, until we achieved “victory” was the patriotic thing to do and to withdraw was unpatriotic. This was a central part of Lieberman’s speech as he introduced his friend McCain in town hall meeting all across the country.
You have come to the wrong place my friend to try to pull the wool over our eyes!
Why the fuck would the Dems be soo stupid to keep this mush mouth fuck in charge of a commitee that was supposed to investigate the Bush administration and, of course, did NOTHING?
If Lieberman is allowed to keep his chair he will become this decades Ken Starr and launch investigation after investigation on every single little non-issue that the GOP will scream about less we forget how important it was to investigate Bill Clinton’s Christmas cards but they didn’t seem too concerned about Bushco.’s failure to protect the country during 9/11, the destruction of NO during Katrina, the illegal war started on lies, the illegal wiretapping of US citizens and the authorization of TORTURE to be used on prisoners.
Let’s face it, they don’t want to boot him because he’s Jewish and they don’t want to offend Israel.
Actually, there is. They call themselves “Democrats.”
Don’t know if anybody’s mentioned it on other threads, but “bailing out” the Big 2.5 prior to bankruptcy won’t do a thing to keep them in business. That’s because the problems with GM and Ford (Chrysler is totally unsalvagable and is better corporately and societally to file C7) are such that:
a) Any money we give them will only go to pay off their bondholders, creditors, both of whom shouldn’t be bailed out under any circumstances, since they acted as enablers in this fiasco. To recapitalize them without discharging debts would as mention cost $100’s of billions.
b) Structurally they are both permanently impaired; they can’t shed dealers except at high buyout cost, they can’t shed workers or entitlement obligations, and they can’t shed/shutdown brands without buying out dealers and P.O’ing customers.
Unfortunately, the only way to for them to remain viable going forward is a Federally supported pre-packaged C11 bankruptcy with gov’t help for pension/healthcare obligations as well as interim Debtor in Possession financing. Both can be fully rehabilitated as highly competitive companies with good worker wages/benefits, but only after they shed excess debt, unnecessary product lines and dealers, excess labor (the literally insane ‘jobs bank’), and offload (BK reduced) legacy benefit costs to the gov’t where they belong anyway.
The management teams at Ford and GM have screwed up for the last 30yrs, and deliberately choose not to file C11 when they could/should have more easily 1-2yrs ago, specifically to force the gov’t to bailout their criminal stupidity. It would be the quintessence of moral hazard to reward this fraudulent behavior.
No. F’ing. Way. to a non-C11 bailout.
Oops. Comment appended to wrong thread. Nevermind
Judad joe, got to go!
Lieberman’s a tool of the Republicon party. Keeping him in a position of power is playing into the hands of the party that will do all in their power to undermine Obama’s administration. Strip him of any meaningful power and let him stew in his juices.
One more reason to oust lieberman. According to public records two major leases for lands for FEMA trailer storage were given outright to : Tommy Montgomery III and his wife Lillian for $960,000 per year (2 years) and an additional $250,000 in improvements to a Lottie, La site) and to Ralph and Jaspar Artall for a Melville site ($1.2 million /yr lease plus $800,000 in improvements). The two families ALSO are on record for the following: Artalls: $422,260.44 in farm subsidies THROUGH 2006! and the Montgomerys $46,583.98 in farm subsidies – 9502006 plus another $6,289 to Montgomery IV in farm subsidies. It all looks like the Same Land! Will Lieberman ever do an investigation of these REP donors? I think NOT. I’ve written to Boxer asking her to investigate as these are OUR Tax funds. (Called, too but couldn’t get through). And, of course, both leases assigned on no-bid contracts.
JoLie is a disgrace to America and the United States Senate. He should resign.
More of less petty than threatening to caucus with Republicans – take his football and go home – if he doesnt get to play quarterback.
CT Democrats rejected Joe in 2006, Joe who campaigned for McCain, Collins, and Coleman in 2008, not their Democratic rivals.
Seriously, what are the consequences of disloyalty and the benefits of being a team players?
Joe Leiberman is as asshat.
