While Los Angeles radio DJ Paul V put this smashmix of Barack Obama’s speeches, techno, rap and world music together (along with a few choice lines from Gov GILF as a counterpoint) before the election, the words of our president-elect resonate strongly in light of California’s passage of Prop 8 and the passage of Propositions 2 in Florida and 102 in Arizona.
Let’s help our new president keep all his promises, including the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. And let’s work together to bring marriage equality to all the states. Yes, we can!

Arizona Prop 102 was very narrow….. constitutional amendment to define marriage between one man and one woman…….
This time they were very smart, did not touch anyone’s benefits straight or gay……. We also have no way to fight this……. because no one lost any rights……. on Nov 2 marriage was defined by statue as one man and one woman…… on Nov 3 it was by constitutional amendment…..
Hey Lisa!
Driving music!
how can they say no one lost any rights katy?
I still don’t think that any move to alter a state’s constitution should be on the ballot with elections for any office. It certainly should not be this easy. Damn disturbing because we, people, have a nasty habit of chopping away at our own liberties w/o thinking of the repercussions.
No more legislating from the pulpit!
continuing on the points made in the thread earlier this evening about the apparent legality of church-funded advocacy efforts on the Yes on 8 side, I guess I’m not so much disagreeing with that analysis – I’m neither an attorney nor a cleric – but I am interested in questioning the law as it stands today. I cannot believe that it was Hamilton and Jefferson’s intent that rights of free speech and freedom of religion should extend to well-capitalized organizations like the Roman Catholic Church spending millions of dollars in deceptive advertising to essentially buy an amendment to a state constitution… and, heck, what’s to stop them from trying with the US constitution as well? In fact, the type of advertising the yes on 8 crowd undertook to fund and produce easily falls within Hamilton’s definition of demagogic incitement and his concerns that it can be used by antidemocratic organizations to subvert and threaten the very idea of constitutional democracy. If section 501 of the Internal Revenue Act is written to protect organizations that act in this manner, then perhaps it needs to be changed. And by the way, that Act was actually used by shrubco to harass antiwar Christian groups, like the Pasadena, CA parish of the Episcopal Church, which saw it’s not for profit status threatened.

I have a statement to make…here is my position summed in two words “Marriage sucks”. Like a vacuum cleaner. It ties you down. It is frustrating. 50% of mariages end up in divorce…usually after several attempts of messy reconciliation. Somebody cheated and took advantage of someone. Enter the lawyers or should I say ambulance chasers who fully extract unaffordable sums from the unfortunate couple. The home is sold at a loss, the credit card debt is stuck on one or the other. Much bitterness and recrimination follows…lots of gossip on whose at fault.
Then their is the court custody battle that never ends until the children grow up. The Bailiffs hate the custody court duty as violence is part of the territory. Then there is custody visits they are so much fun. The kids get to us this as leverage to get their own way. Then there is the in laws yes you married them to and they will be visiting yada yada yada. And so it goes…
Till death do us part…well take the plunge now that you know a little more about marriage best of luck you deserve it just as much as anyone else so you have my complete and continued support! My next door nieghbor mormons…two wild and crazy guy roomates hsve the sign out YES on 8 and on the vehicles. Could we get some help down here? Big fun on my street. Across the street they still have their No on 8 sign in your face.
