The state of Minnesota has had a solid recount law in place for nearly half a century. When close elections happen, and they do, the law is triggered and procedures that all parties know and understand are set into motion. In other words, this ain’t no Florida, as Flash says.
Yet Norm Coleman’s crybaby Nieman-Marcus Riot Act — an act roundly condemned by even conservative newspapers in Minnesota — is finding a willing set of stenographers in the national press. Media Matters’ Jamison Foser documents the atrocities:
Here’s how Meredith Vieira, co-host of NBC’s Today, began a report on the Minnesota recount: "If you thought the election debacle in Florida could never happen again, wait until you see the situation in Minnesota."
This is nonsense. The "debacle" in Florida wasn’t that there was a recount; the "debacle" was an absurdly designed ballot that led to thousands of people who meant to vote for Al Gore voting for Pat Buchanan instead. The "debacle" was that thousands of voters were improperly purged from voter rolls. The "debacle" was that the state’s electoral votes were awarded to the candidate for whom fewer voters attempted to cast ballots. None of those factors are present in Minnesota.
Even worse, on that very same Today show segment, reporter Lee Cowan eagerly regurged as fact a bogus story about allegedly-unsecured ballots magically appearing in the trunk of a car — one that got its start from the Coleman camp’s own lawyer Fritz Knaak, and which Knaak had been forced to recant two days before Cowan’s repeating it to a national TV audience.
Ah, but for the most slavish retransmitting of Republican recount nonsense in a media outlet with a national reach — aside, of course, from Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News — one must go to the New York Times. The Gross Lady not only gave media play to Fritz Knaak’s evidence-free claims of "shenanigans" (without so much as even a bogus hint as to what these alleged "shenanigans" might be), but gave respectful space to other bogosities and groundless opinionating designed to cast doubt on the legitimacy of Minnesota’s recount process – and on Franken’s victory, should he win (which, as Nate Silver explains, is quite possible, and in fact may be likely). The Gross Lady is also amping up its FOX imitation by passing along, without question or comments, Republican attack hooey on Mark Ritchie, Minnesota’s extremely upright Secretary of State — while ignoring Republican praise of Ritchie’s bipartisan appointments to the state canvassing board.
For the real info about the Minnesota senate race recount, avoid the GOP/Media Complex. Stick to local media sites (though you might want to avoid much of what the Coleman-endorsing StarTribune emits); local blogs like Centristy, Blog of the Moderate Left, Minnesota Campaign Report, and Bluestem Prairie; watchdogs like Media Matters, and of course Fire Dog Lake — where we’ll do our best to summarize the best reporting and credit the persons behind it.

this is pretty coincidental, I am listening to air america right now, there is a guest named greg palace who tells us they stole even more votes this election then they did bush/kerry but our turnout was too great to overcome
this is why krystol and drudge were saying they thought mccain could do it, they were setting the stage incase they were able to flip enough votes, they were not
you can listen now but I don’t know if you’ll miss the segment or not
http://airamerica.com/listen
so it’s been certified, atlanta will be re-voted and there are going to be some experts trying to make sure all the votes will be counted
mccain is down there campaigning for the republicans, if obama doesn’t find time to go and rally the democrats I am going to be really disapointed
It still boggles my mind that people, even around here, still argue with me that it’s “all about the ratings.”
Sure, there are some actual journalists in the BigMedia, but the majority of it is designed to push ideology on the electorate so they keep voting in BigMoney-backed politicians. 80 of the biggest corporations (and biggest advertiser) blacklisted Air America Radio for example. At the same time, these same companies shell out hundreds of millions to Ruturd Murdoch owned outlets, even when his outlets are not highly-rated (like Pox’s first 5 years of operations).
We need to develop the New Media through our financial support and word-of-mouth advertising so it can grow 10-20 times bigger than it is now. We must replace BigMedia, not alter it.
that is a great post bonkers, we know as a fact randi rhodes out performs everyone, she gets more share then rush, hannity, and everyone in her time slot
yet how could corporate america advertise on air america when they knew they would be shooting themselves in the foot?
your post could make a great oxdown diary
Perris @4: Obama’s not going there himself, I don’t believe, but he has sent staff down there to keep the ground game going for Davis.
PW: I’m not at all surprised when Big Media transmits Republican talking points, considering that all of the national and big media companies are owned by Republicans, their boosters, and their backers. One day we’ll see a concerted effort by progressives to purchase a controlling interest in one national media outlet, and when we’re successful at that, it will be possible to pass on less- (or at least progressively-) biased reportage.
greg palace is saying he doesn’t think obama is willing to put his name on the line in atanta, if he goes down and our candidate loses obama will lose some of his “political capitol”
this might be the best strategy for him.
if he can get his ground game down there, use his text thingy to the max and promise that he will appear down there if they deliver the democrat, that might be better then an appearance
I really don’t want to see him go to atlanta and not pull the votes we need to win
Many people wonder why so many middle-income folks vote against their own interests. This situation is not an accident. It was very carefully crafted decades ago, and controlling the public discourse was at the center of it all.
Thanks for this. The Gross Lady is acting more and more as if Murdoch bought her, instead of the WSJ.
I didn’t hear the AAR broadcast, but I’m sure that the person you were listening to was Greg Palast, not Palace. He did a lot of work on the 2000 election in Florida to show how the voter roles were purged by jeb and harris. Palast also did work on the 2004 election to show how votes were stolen in Ohio, as well as other places. He is an investigative reporter for the Guardian and does great work.
Ex-U.S. Attorney Heffelfinger, a Republican, originally was slated to lead the Coleman recount campaign. He gave a polite excuse (too busy), but I’m convinced that he was unwilling to participate in (or provide cover for) the sleazy stuff Coleman and the national Republicans had in mind. He’s a hardcore Republican, but still retains his sense of honor and respect for the law.
Even knowing what I do, I’m amazed at the way the Coleman people have immediately claimed fraud whenever any little thing went Franken’s way — as though this were a crooked Florida or Louisiana election. I suspect that this will backfire on Coleman soon enough, unless he backs off quite a bit. Minnesotans take pride in their state’s reputation for honesty and decency.
Coleman still has at least a 50% chance of winning the recount, in my opinion, and there’s a real possibility that he’ll become Senator after having spent two months trying to discredit the process that elected him — and in addition to that, insulting the state that elected him and its voters.
Glenn Beck is the disproof of the “It’s all about ratings” argument. Not only is he a scummier guy than even Limbaugh or O’Reilly, but he consistently has the lowest ratings of all. But he’s still there.
I was glad to hear they will have early voting. Need to get the word out.
Pat Buchanan, George Will, William Safire, David Brooks, Bill Kristol, David Gergen, Michael Gerson, Joe Scarborough, Jonah Goldberg, and God knows who else were all Republican operatives before they were media people.
There are ex-Democrats in media too (Estrich, Stephanopolous, Matthews, and the late Tim Russert), but none of them do the job for the Democrats the way thoe Republicans do the job for the Republicans.
I’m convinced that these guys are forced on the Times and the Post by outside pressure and are for that reason untouchable.
It’s getting even stranger with MSM, isn’t it. They are getting into soap opera territory. Each day, each and every player needs to appear.
I say that with no authority…it’s my imagination…I watched Luke and Laura.
Infomercial.
Way late here, but noteworthy that Tweety also was makin’ much ado about nuttin’ and the ballots in the backseat on his show Friday.
All these guys are doin’ their best to reducing political discourse to the level of pro wrestling. And too often succeeding.
the greatest “disproof” is rush limbaugh
he was an incredible flop and hated when he first hit the air and yet clear channel broadcast him nationally, sometimes three times in the same market.
faux news is another disproof, they lost tons of money and didn’t turn a penny until hannity and billo.
media is corporate propaganda, even if it didn’t make a penny on broadcast they get dividends down the road with the influence they peddle
yes, they are able to get the middle class voting against themselves, voting against their children and their own parents
it is bizarre, corporate media is able to get turn them into marionttes
we really do need a fairness doctrine…and pronto
ya, that’s the guy, he is saying he does not believe obama will show up, he is not willing to risk his political capitol on a loss
time will tell, it will be very nice to win another southern town
bed for me, see all manana
The sad thing is that Obama himself might help in Atlanta but hurt in the rest of the state. The whole skin-color thing, y’know.
