While George W. Bush is leaving office more unpopular than Nixon at the time of his resignation (76% disapproval rate for our lame duck pres–nice work Dubbya), his biopic has done better at the US box office than Tricky Dick’s.

 W. earned $10.5 million on opening weekend and $24.2 million in the US, while Nixon earned less than $14 million during its entire US run.

W. opened third at the box office October 17 and then plummeted out of the Top Ten. Opening weekend, W. made $5,175 per screen while Nixon earned $4,292.  Adjusting for changes in ticket prices, Nixon actually fared better on a per screen average opening weekend. In 1995 the average theater ticket was $4.35 while in 2008 movie goers were paying $7.08.

Internationally however,  Nixon has kicked W’s ass, raking in $34.5 million to W’s$ 24.2 million, even with adjustments for the rise in ticket prices. Both were directed by Oliver Stone.

 Actor Josh Brolin who plays B in W. says about the hugely unpopular president and his not-so-popular biopic:
