There is much speculation going on right now about how Obama would govern if elected president. Yesterday John Kerry was on Meet the Press talking about how he would urge Obama to "build 85 vote majorities" in the Senate. Doug Schoen, the political mastermind whose strategy for the past 8 years has largely been telling Democrats to accomodate George Bush, says that Obama must demonstrate his commitment to bipartisanship by appointing Republicans to his cabinet.
That may be fabulous political speech, but people who pay even remotely close attention to politics know that in order to get 85 votes on anything in the Senate, you’re basically telling lobbyists and the corporate cons who pay them that they’ve got veto power over any legislation. There is no shiny new bill with pearly white teeth that is going to make everyone happy — if there were, it would’ve passed already. Eighty five votes is the political equivalent of the status quo.
What’s surprising is that in the very next breath, and with no apparent sense of contradiction, people will talk about the likelihood of Rahm Emanuel being Obama’s Chief of Staff. It’s a real knee-slapper. Rahm and 85 votes? You’ve got to be kidding. It will be an instant sign that all the bipartisan talk is just that — talk — and signal that Obama intends to work solely within the Democratic caucus to achieve his objectives. The Republicans would be welcome to tag along if they like.
I don’t share Rahm’s political objectives — he’s the architect of NAFTA, a "free trade" hound and the godfather of the Heath Schuler immigration bill, which seeks to privatize the border and give illegal immigrants no path to citizenship. But Rahm doesn’t do "bipartisan" — which I’ve always sort of liked about him. Not that I think the Republicans have any interest in working with a Democratic administration — particularly not the ones who are left after Tuesday. As Paul Krugmann notes this morning, the moderates will likely be purged from the party, leaving it in the hands of the extremists. They’re very good at operating as an opposition party and will be only too happy to do so once again.
The Obama team has been remarkably leak-proof so odds are this rumor didn’t come from them, and Rahm is rather notorious for floating these things himself. But the only thing Rahm Emanuel is going to extend across the aisle to Republicans is a sharp slap in the face, and if Obama does indeed appoint him, we’ll soon see just how important achieving 85 votes is to a new administration.

I dont know what Rahm would do in that situation. He seems to have been a no-balls Democrat on a number of issues in the House. Was that tactics or his heart?
It surely would be interesting if Rahmbo was Obama’s Chief of Staff. The leak represents everything Obama doesn’t like. He’s not one prone for drama which, is what Rahmbo would bring. Also, I still don’t see Rahm giving up chance to be Speaker in the next few years(Or when ever Hoyer and Pelosi retire .. if they retire in the next few years .. since I think Pelosi will try to outlast Hoyer .. pure speculation on my part).
Chief of Staff might not be a bad place for Emmanuelle. No real decision-making authority as the President’s scheduler, and could be a way to keep him happy and out of Howard Dean’s business. If The Slippery One stays in Congress, we know he’ll be scheming to undermine any Liberal efforts, so getting him out of office and replaced with an actual Democrat would be nice.
I know he could still do damage as CoS, but not too much and it could be a way to contain him. Don’t know enough about the inner workings of that position but remember stories that they can be kept out of the loop on policy issues. which would be nice in Rahmen noodle’s case.
Hey Jane and Firedogs,
asked this when the rumor broke – who would replace Rahm as Caucus Chair ? Van Hollen ??
wikipedia:
From the wiki link:
Seems a Prez can make a CoS as “powerful” as they want. Given Obama’s community organizing background and support, and his seemingly great relationship with Howard Dean, I’d guess that Obama would relegate Emmanuelle to a scheduler. Would be funny to have Rahmbo scheduling meetings with Howard Dean and making sure there’s water and snacks in the room, and then Obama says, “We’re good Rahm. Thanks. We’ll be done in an hour.” (door shuts).
Hey, one can dream, right?
WTF is wrong with John Kerry. I swear these people enjoy being forced to kiss the feet of Republicans.
I just became a Rahmbo fan.
digg
It’s not force when one is so consistently willing.
Whats worse Rahm in the House leadership or Rahm in the White House where can he do less harm?
Don’t forget Rahm’s role in the Nikki Tinker debacle.
It might actually be nice to see him out of the House. Judging from what I’ve seen of Obama, I seriously doubt Rahm will be able to pull any Svengali moves on him.
Inbred elite?
Yup. From what I’ve seen of Obama, he is a man of indomitable will. It almost would be fun to watch him slap down Emanuel if the latter tried to boss him around.
When I read that, I had to check back at the top because I thought this was a post by Jane. Yep, it says Jane wrote it. Maybe I read the post wrong . . . nope.
You know what’s going to happen next, don’t you? Rahm will print this post out, circle this line in red, frame it, and put it on his wall.
Who is going to replace Rahm Gov. Blagojevich gets the pick I know that people are thinking Jesse Jackson Jr, or Lisa Madigan.
But who else?
Obama has surrounded himself with the best and brightest. I haven’t yet seen any evidence that he appoints individuals for the sole purpose of rewarding political favors, which is the only scenario I can imagine in which Rahm might become WH Chief of Staff.
What did I miss? Jesse Jackson Jr. is already a House member…
This is the same Rahm Emmanuel that just got targeted in Chicago with the immigrant vote, yes?
The same Rahm Emmanuel that has had his own agenda when it comes to electing progressive democrats?
Same guy?
Just checking.
That guy turned loose in the Whitehouse would be a fucking disaster.
My mistake I read that somewhere.
Now I remember Jesse Jackson Jr and Lisa Madigan are up to get Obama’s seat sorry.
Who is likely to get Rahm’s House seat then?
I agree, and I doubt that Rahm would give up his power in the House because Obama won’t be prez in 8 years and Rahm would be out of politics if he took the COS job.
He was first elected in 1995. Keeps a relatively low profile in the House but actually has a pretty impressive record. Here’s a link to his Wikipedia bio.
But such an appointment would please the progressives. /s
perhaps Rahm would be better suited running a blue ribbon special commission charged with investigating and prosecuting 8 years of rethug wrongdoing. He will gleefully leave no stone unturned.
Rahm needs a job big pay fancy title no ability to set policy UN spokesman?
Jane, is that the AP article you meant to link? I was expecting the AP one that said “officials say” as the source, re: Emmanuel. AP article. “Officials say”. hmmm… let me see if I can find the link I am referring to.
OT: Cindy McPartner was to be on Larry King tonight. Did anyone hear her?I did not….
Some “made” man anointed by the Chicago machine. Blagojevich will rubber-stamp the choice.
That’s kinda what I thought when this got floated a few days ago.
Sort of “keep your friends close, but your enemies closer”.
No way Obama’s CoS is gonna keep him in a bubble or entirely decide who he will or will not see, and as you point out we might be able to put a true Liberal in his seat.
And, as to Jane’s point, screw bipartisanship. They are due more than a few “sharp slap(s) in the face”.
A few “kicks in the ass” would be fine by me as well.
War Crimes Prosecutor or Judge I can go along with that?
I can easily say Rahm Emmanuel does not represent my ideas for the future of the Democratic party.
Tammy Duckworth, because she will do exactly what he tells her to do. although both Jackson and Madigan would be beholden to him as well
would much prefer him in the WH and love the idea someone may have done to neutralize him. now about that Hoyer fellow, what could the Obama team about that ? Commerce Secretary ? something prestigious enough to satisfy that ego but of no real consequence
Evenin’ All
Blago is at odds with Daley his father in law is his power base.
Best thing (not for Rahm, for the country) would be a diplomatic post to some inconsequential corner of the globe… Maybe it’s time to open a U.S. embassy in Antarctica.
Yeah it could work I like how you think.
Yeah, but they probably have dirt on him.
With all the problems we have now, everything is of real consequence. No ego jobs left, I think.
“Doug Schoen, the political mastermind whose strategy for the past 8 years has largely been telling Democrats to accomodate George Bush, says that Obama must demonstrate his commitment to bipartisanship by appointing Republicans to his cabinet.”
Yeah, I remember in 2001 when the Supreme Court appointed Bush president after he got a minority of the popular vote and a minority of the electoral vote. There was talk about how Bush should embrace the “losing” Democrats, make it a true bipartisan administration because he clearly didn’t have a mandate. We saw what came of that.
When Obama wins a mandate tomorrow, I am going to have very little tolerance for the notion that we owe the party of George W. Bush, John McSame and Sarah Palin anything, even the time of day.
It is their turn to suffer.
Would it be weird to ask if David Axelrod would be Chief of Staff? He’s run an incredible campaign with incredible teamwork. Or is he election material only? Just wondering.
http://ap.google.com/article/A…..wD94549M81
WASHINGTON (AP) — Barack Obama’s campaign has approached Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel about possibly serving as White House chief of staff, officials said Thursday
One last poo fling on my teevee. The Rev. Wright ad compliments of Senator Poo Flinger.
Who is still listening to Joe Lieberman?
I really like Axelrod. I don’t have any idea if he’d be a good choice but I’m certain Obama does.
p.s. I was wondering about this when I first read it, knowing it was AP, and that Emanuel is not exactly unknown to promote himself by stirring up rumors.
Officials of the campaign? transition team?
Reported by AP and picked up by Fox News.
Hmmmm…
I tend to agree here. Rahm Emanuel is pretty much spotlight-whore and nothing else. What is he the best at? What topic is he the brightest about? I can’t see Obama having much use for him. Just let him stay in the House and take credit for things.
Today’s trivia questions: 1. How many Democrats are in the Bush Cabinet? 2. What are their names? 3. Which prominent media figures have urged Bush to include Democrats in his cabinet?
Shouldn’t take y’all long to come up with the answers….
Probably Lindsey Graham since the two of them are roommates in McCain’s mavericky buttcrack.
haha…
‘officials said’
anagrams to
‘If fiasco dials.’
well, you know the old saying:
“yeah, he’s a (insert favorite expletive), but he’s OUR (insert favorite expletive)”
The article from foxnews.com goes on to detail Rahm’s bio…hilarious.
I agree, but you can’t deny he has status within the party.
He’s not gonna leave his seat for some out of the loop job, and I would rather see him out of the House vs. aiming to be Speaker someday.
Fetching hot coffee at the White House and slapping Republicans around sounds like a good job for him to me.
What is that smell?
hey jane, hey pups! another drive by for a few more days….am exhausted, but had to comment on the raum thing.
i heard raum said no, that he wants to be speaker, heard that a week ago. but i have a hard time believing that he would turn down the influence and what he would see as his use of his ‘intellect’ that job would provide.
just got home an hour or so ago, many many hours at the local obama office for a while now.it’s why i haven’t been here much. intense as hell today. one more day.
i suggested to our local volunteer coordinator, when i called a few minutes ago to tell her about obama’s gma’s death from cancer, (no tv or radio there)that we walk in peace tomorrow-to give her a reason to reign in her ‘edge’ has been displaying, tired and stressed. people are exhausted and need support, is why i have been showing up to help alleviate that, been playing ‘girl friday’. have learned a lot and have to say it has been one of the best decisions i have ever made. also have seen many people i miss and haven’t seen for a while, they have been volunteering.
anything you can do tomorrow at your local offices, do it. take in some cookies in baggies for canvassers, any ‘to go’ food, give a little more in these last few hours to the people who have been working their asses off. they are so tired and so dedicated.
that’s what i’ve been doing. hope it helped.
off to watch the news, miss you all, love, d.
If Fox reported it, it must be true….right????
lol. even Rahm’s farts smell great to foxnews.
he had on a red sweater under his blazer at a mccain rally today, he’s turned the final curve in the road.
nite all.
I’m with you.
They can reach in the bag, open up the wrapper and eat the same s&^t burger they shoved down our throats for the last eight years.
gnite, dmac
I assumed Axelrod would go straight to Chief of Staff, – if he wanted it.
looks now like he’ll relax, bask, and hang out his shingle and catch a few really big fi$h
Lots to do tomorrow so gonna leap into my tree.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Vote early and vote often.
Namaste
Interesting comment by Edward Teller in the Emptywheel thread.
I think Rhambo’s machine floated the chief-of-staff rumor.
To have done it after the election would have been soliciting the office in a simple whorish, Rahm manner. But to do it before election day is not. I predict Howard Dean as chief-of-staff, as one of Obama’s first moves to keep the momentum going inside the administration, but nationwide, for four years. And to tell Rahm, “thanks, but no thanks.”
Obama owes Emanuel very little. The entire Democratic Party owes Howard Dean a significant gesture, at the very least.
cya, SD
Okay, okay… that was hilarious!
NAFTA is not bi-part? Or brining in Blue dogs? I guess I don’t understand all the definitions here.
What position does anyone see for Chuck Hagel – if you do see one?
OT: News that Palin has just released the medical records…why in the world?
I don’t think Obama will offer such an important job as a reward. If he thinks Dean would be the best choice, he’ll make the offer. It wouldn’t surprise me, I personally think Dean has the requisite brains and the energy for the job.
Dean took himself out of presidential contention to get the job at DNC. I don’t know if he’d dump that for a lesser position.
Why would Obama want to waste the effort keeping his COS in line? What a waste of time.
Ron just said that Joe Lieberman is John McCain’s personal ball washer.
I always imagine Lieberman and Graham as the sort of guys who go completely overboard with cologne. That might explain why…
At least they should be easy to reach from his primary residence.
Short Ride was with McSFB in Tampa this morning. Wowing the humungous crowd of 1000. Now that’s pathetic.
haahahaahiccup…..haaahahaa
Stem Cell Stocks made big gains today. The market is betting on Obama.
950 of them were there because they were promised free beer.
LOL
Good to read that you realize how important Dr. Dean’s work actually is. Chief-of-staff to the president at this time might be more important than at some other times.
McSlime nite-before-the-election commercial:
“Barack Obama: Too Radical, Too Risky.”
that’s all they’ve got?
hahahahahahahahahah
Ballwasher made a recent ballwashing statement that could be construed as ambivalence. IOW, he might be willing to wash Obama’s balls if the Rethugs can’t steal the election for McBombiran.
That’s interesting. The market was remarkably tranquil today. Be amusing if it stabilizes as soon as Obama clinches the election. Too much to hope for but nice to ponder.
They bused in 1000 school kids for their last big rally.
EWWW! Put yer teeth back in Joe!
I suggest that Liarman keep his hands to himself and wash his own balls.
More like 2500, they emptied out an entire school district!!
Link? I’m quite curious to see the parts about what her doctor told her before she decided to board a plane after her water had broken. Because I know that if I had been that doctor, there would have been a lengthy CYA note about how I told the patient that she was risking the life of both herself and her baby by doing so, and that I had absolutely advised her against it. Any doctor in the country would have seen that as a potential malpractice suit and would have documented their response to it.
Egad, that took an ugly turn.
Good evening everyone….. Just heard from a friend who dropped off our button making machine to the downtown Phoenix Obama campaign office…. she said it was amazing….
There were 100’s of people working, making phone calls, they were out front, in the back and side yards, sitting on the floor, on their cars, every where making calls and they were happy and laughing……
THATS McCain’s home state and home city…… hahahahahaha
ASTM up 58 percent, STEM up 39 percent from Friday’s close.
85 vote margin? Remember when we couldn’t pass legislation because we lacked sixty votes to cut off a filibuster? Well, now we won’t be able to do anything because while we have the White House and filibuster proof margin in the Senate, we need 85 votes to get anything done.
Jane, I LUV your phrase leadersheep, captures their style precisely.
Speaking of ugly, I just saw MR. Lieberman directly behind John McCain at his rally today on the television.
kinda OT, but if anyone needs a laugh, go check out db’s latest, and then this related YT.

o/t anyone see KO tonight? the campaign comment seems counter productive…
every time I see him with mccain on the trail I just. cannot. believe. any dem will speak to him. Geez!
pw up at the mothership
That’s the one. Wasn’t that some crapola? 2500 kids. That’s a Maverick for ya. You betcha!
Covered, briefly, on CNN…a woman of good health/some of the usual women’s health problems is the way it was reported. The CNN dr. (is Gupta?) is going to go through the records….sounded unremarkable.. (going to do another summary this hour)
Was about to turn it in when Frank “The Boogey Man” Gaffney just came on my TV representing the MIC in trying to scare us all re: the consequences of not throwing more billions more into the defense department black hole.
He mumbles something (with scary music playing in the background) about the consequences of 4 years of incompetence in the military and national security arenas being disastrous.
He and his neocon buddies should know.
You assume facts not in evidence.
I’ve been assuming for quite some time that Rahm wants Obama’s Senate seat.
I don’t know if we can ever blast Hoyer out of there via non-re-election. The only hope seems to be House Democrats getting some smarts and some spine. Oh, right House Democrats. Never mind. He’s been cultivated those rotten Blue Dogs with our money for all these years. Say hello to Speaker Hoyer.
AFAIK ONE, Transportation Sec. whose name escapes me.
Maybe he’ll take “that one’s” advice and go out west where he can learn to surf the California waves and catch some rays. Heh.
I saw that too. Perhaps folks should e-mail Harry Reid a copy?
Doug Schoen, that’s who.
Probably thinks Obama should “reach out” to Lieberman and make him Secretary of Defense.
The last thing the Dems should do is “reach out” to the GOP on anything. S**t, Clinton did that for 8 years, and he got impeached by those guys. Bush didn’t even win the popular vote and was appointed by the Supreme Court. What did he do? He gave the Dems the finger with both hands until 2006, then he gave them the finger with one hand.
If anybody needs to reach across the aisle, it’s the GOP.
We should promise to reach out to whomever Republicans are left in 4 years- after we’re done investigating/indicting/prosecuting/incarcerating the organized crime players. Once we’ve put those guys behind bars, the remaining Republicans ought to be docile enough to work with them in a civil manner. They might even thank us for helping to get their party back from the Syndicate.
I love your posits. Rahm is . . . well, I don’t care for his brand of politics.
And anyone who thinks ANY Chief Of Staff is gonna TELL Mr. Obama what to do or when is missing it between BOTH ears.
And we get a REAL dem in Rahm’s place!!! One more step closer . . .
I like the scenario.
But, as was said . . . where did this leak from a few days ago? I’m with the ‘Rahm Leaked It’ brigade.
So given Mr. Obama’s tight control of messaging, we’ll have to hope there’s another way to remove Rahm from our harm’s way and get him a busboy job somewhere . . . .
it is funny how ignorant you folks are.
rahm is the action officer for the mossad in the usa.
any elevation he might achieve to running the obombya, bidemup regime will result in more genocide in gaza, the west bank.
if obombya attains the presidency, and rahm becomes elevated, the elimination of all the palestinians will occur. on that watch.
without an objection.
note that prophecy
The Republicons are deserving of far more than just a slap in the face. Long prison terms for the masterminds of the largest criminal conspiracy in U.S. history is more appropriate. The Republicons that are left on the outside can then be slapped around a bit.
Jane,
Thank you and all the Firedoglake brainiacs for all you do!
We all owe Dr. Howard Dean our gratitude for his fortitude and foresight, i.e his early recognition of Senator Obama as the future of the Democratic Party. His rational approach to the electorate has made the difference we have been praying for. Remember, he was ridiculed and marginalized for his enthusiasm, by the MSM (Vast Right Wing Media) no less. His 50 state plan to reach out to the three digit I.Q. Republicans (those with functioning cerebral cortexes) by respecting them enough to ASK for their vote was the beginning of the changes we seek in our government. Thank you Howard! Today you are vindicated! YEEHAW! Obama/Biden 08!
Rahm is high maintenance and self-aggrandizing. Doubt anyone could control his mouth if he perceived some self-serving angle.
My money says this this story is Rahm’s work and Obama has enough judgment/experience not to inject someone that toxic into his effective and and discreet organization.
