It would be one thing for the GOP to stick with McCain through election day if there was nothing else at stake. But in a time of limited resources, with Democrats having a serious shot at 60 votes in the Senate, it was inevitable that there would be a public push to throw McCain under the bus.
David Frum is in the Washington Post today arguing that every dollar that the Republicans can shift to the Senate races, they should. It’s the peril McCain faces from taking public financing and thinking that he could tap the RNC’s cash at the same time (which nobody who criticizes Obama for refusing public financing ever brings up). If the RNC decides, like Frum, that Pennsylvania is a pipe dream and saving McConnell and Chambliss are paramount to the party going forward, they could pull the plug on McCain and there’s not much he can do about it.
There were already rumblings of this when the RNC decided to tap a $5 million line of credit for endangered incumbents. But Frum is also arguing that the new message going forward should be about the danger of having one party who controls both Congerss and the White House.
There were a lot of people echoing the "danger of Democrats unchecked" on the Sunday morning talking heads. Which certainly argues that they have decided McCain’s defeat is a foregone conclusion.

It was cited somewhere: the number of voters who would cast their ballot based upon a balance of power is 8%. It is one of the many survey responses I question. We have seen plenty of times how respondents to these questions will pick from a shopping list the most provident-sounding multiple-choice answer – I remember last cycle when an exasperated leader of a focus group challenged his charges: “Look, you all told me you were interested in `issues’ and not `values’ and yet every one of your comments pertains to personality!”
My favorite survey report was from January 1999. By large pluralities, the respondents believed (1) President Clinton’s private life was his own business and nobody else’s and (2) he should fully and completely disclose all the facts about his connection with Ms Lewinsky at the earliest.
Yeah Charlie “rear view mirror” Cook was on MTP this morning questioning that. He says that the number of people worried about one party having all the control is at the lowest point it’s ever been — and since the GOP did a great job of sticking hacks in every appointed position they possibly could, I’m not sure it’s a big worry anyway.
And don’t the Republicans have the expertise to know ALL ABOUT THAT!
Are they afraid that such a powerful party will use that power to lie us into unnecessary wars or strip away our Constitutional rights? Gee, how far back into the pages of time will we have to search for such an abuse to reveal the inherent dangers of one-party control (when the intent is inherently evil)?
The thing Republicans fear the most is the ability of a new majority to INVESTIGATE AND CONVICT all the co-conspirators under the RICO statutes.

I think we saw from David Frum, on Rachel Maddow in the last week or so, what a miserable, scrabbling little scab of a man he is. Even if the McCain campaign is sinking fast, giving credence to anything that little piece of offal has to say would only speed the process.
That was really fun.
I couldn’t be happier than to see the Republican Party hoisted on its own petard, aAHAHA!
ps I love the illustration, delightful.
There’s lots of fun in the Frum piece. I especially like his view that the Palin strategy “alienated and offended the great national middle”.
Now that’s a phrase you could pick up and run with. What if the great national middle doesn’t mind a few years of one party “left wing” Government to put some of the mess right?
These guys are just so utterly clueless. Now they move to the argument that it is important to prevent the Democrats doing what they have done. What they don’t understand is that most people will understand that the Democrats are at least a little less evil in their intentions than the Republicans. Frum and friends are completely unable to grasp the concept that some politicians might actually get into politics to help the country and the people.
Back from the place that time forgot (i.e. a US National Forest with the Larch turning a gorgeous golden color), with the thought: What if citizens remember how often Republicans gloated about blocking action in Congress?
A friend of mine here in Utah related that he was at a small gathering last night for a Republican candidate for a local Senate seat here in the Utah Legislature. He said that throughout his entire remarks the “don’t let one party control all the levers of govt.” meme/scare tactic. When an individual mentioned Republican threats to go to the “nuclear option” to break Democratic filibusters, he just kept rambling on about the dangers of liberals.
FWIW
Why would this “maverick who has fought against his own party” give a flying fuck if the rest of these skunks twist slowly, slowly . . .?
dare you to Oxdown these videos!
And then there’s this fool at the Post.
Because not being disenfranchised at the ballot box is a subversive act.
I think Rachel’s bookers will have a hard time getting other mindless conservatives to appear on her show. That was a thing of beauty, and we may never see its likes again.
or Rove’s permanent republican majority, for that matter.
personally, I think our goals can be more
modest than permanence. If they behave, we can review their exile to the wilderness in, oh, a generation or two
Earlier today I e-mailed a response to Mr. Frum regarding his piece in the Washington Post. It went something like this:
Dear Mr. Frum:
I find it simply amazing that you would publicly voice such concerns over what you perceive as the potential “threat” of “unchecked” Democratic control over our Government. I believe in psychological terms this is referred to as “Projection”. Considering Republicans have had virtually unchecked power in Washington for at least a decade (and we have seen the fruits of that labor), I find your concerns self-serving at best. Just because your own party is totally bereft of decency (and I could count the ways), is no reason to project your sinister belief system upon others as it only serves to shine a light on your own inner demons. I wish you luck with those by the way.
One last thing before I leave you with the aforementioned demons, your behavior on Rachel Maddows show recently only served to make you look like an ass. Suggesting Rachel needs to be the change she wants to be in the world, when she does just that every day, made you come across as petulant and with a total lack of understanding of the meaning of the message. Everyone who watches Rachel’s show likes and admires her. You on the other hand, not so much.
Best Wishes.
that’s the new meme. fox even said as much this morning, which makes it official I guess.
Sweet
It is the Democrats we need to keep on the straight and arrow, so they keep their majority. Democrats lost it the last time because of corruption and a sense of entitlement. I just hope the current bunch of Democrats don’t turn sour as fast as the Republicans did. We are going to need more time to fix all the stuff the Republicans broke.
Thanks, nice, funny stuff.
Could McCain blow a fuse and start trashing the RNC? Where is that popcorn?
In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a “crowd” of 200 die-hards watched John McCain tell them how much he appreciates being in a place that is [sic] “family-valued.”
In Denver, Obama addressed a crowd of 100,000.
At least, we finally figured out why McCain addresses those who listen as “my friends.” That’s all he’s got coming out for him.
thanks.
It has been out there for awhile. Back in June, a candidate for Washington State legislature said that concerning why it was important to vote for Dino Rossi. I didn’t laugh at her (actually just voted for her as she is the much better Republican of my two choices), but told her than Republicans could no longer claim to being fiscally responsible.
Tidbit: We now have a top-two primary system, which I’m in favor of. Instead of only getting wingnuts to vote for, we get a regular person and a wingnut. They may both be Republicans, but there is a difference.
Jane, it’s been a long time since I told you how fabulous you are.
So I’m doing it again.
To me, you’re one of the most beautiful women in the world.
I’m not completely ruling out the pssibility that Same and First Mom start trashing each other
The corporate media is sh*tting bricks at
the prospect of unified government.
Last week, The Rochester, NY, D&C endorsed Bush dead-ender Randy Kuhl for
re-election in NY-29. Check out the convoluted, acrobatic rationale,
ably deconstructed in this analysis by Rochester Turning .
Completely off-topic (or is it)?
My wife and I went to the Cheech and Chong reunion show in Minneapolis last night.
I laughed harder than I have in years. And did they ever torch BushCo and McCainiac. There were a few RedStaters in the crowd who soon realized that this was not to be their night.
Highly recommended (leave it alone Punaise).
The GOoPers complaining about the possibility of single-party rule is irony indeed.
