The hoaxster who scratched a "B" into her own cheek and claimed that a fictional black Obama-supporting thug did it now blames the media for blowing her politically-motivated hate crime into a political firestorm: "She just opened up and said she wanted to tell the truth," Bryant said, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "She was upset with the media for blowing this into a political firestorm."
Little Ashley learned well from McCain/Palin, when all else fails, blame the media.

About FDL Action
She’s a Republican. Republicans are blameless.
Fox will use this to justify throwing McCain/Palin under the bus.
Fox will endorse Obama.
The fox is donning a hen suit and will walk right into the coop. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
You heard it here first.
Wow, they really have been hardwired for that, haven’t they? It’s been programmed as a default response in their tiny little brains.
If by “the media” she means “the media whose world is ruled by Drudge” I suppose she might have a wee point.
That is true. So since they are not to be blamed then you are just going to have to fall on your sword for them.
She’s blaming the media now? This morning she was pushing the “I’ve got mental problems and I don’t remember any of it so you can’t pick on me nyaaaaah!” defense:
The Scar(let) Let Her
Drudge is a huge villian in all this. Once he saw her picture with the backwards B he should have pulled the story right away.
Yeah right, the media scratched that mark on your face and the dialed 911.
Honey, get some help. You are Fucked. Up..
yeah.. as I said on the previous thread, Faux has been carpet-broadcasting this story all day, on both tv and its website… I just figured it was as simple as that their appetite for prurient, scandalous news involving a cute woman trumps even their partisanship, but could it be more than that? It might be just thing they need to have available to them a Rovian excuse for what they must now view as an inevitable defeat in two weeks. Faux throws Insane under the bus for the good the party, all at the expense of a mentally deranged 20 year old. Wow. The cynicism.
Pigs will hover over La Guardia looking for a place to land long before that happens.
That assumes Drudge has brains and uses them.
I knew it was a fake story from the start. No Obama supporter would ever do something like that.
Now the Nader crowd, those are the guys with the bad attitudes!
Fox will endorse Obama the minute hell freezes over.
oh well. this is what the arsehats at Redstate have to say:
“For the members of the left now gloating, please remember we correct our stories. You do not.”
A kid mutilating herself is awful. A kid mutilating herself for John McCain is insane. Padded room, please? I’m serious. get this child out of circulation.
True. At least his emphasis on this story will backfire and only hurt the race-baiting thugs, though.
Not a well woman this one.
Yeah, they corrected that “We know where the weapons of mass destruction are,” really quickly.
Let’s see. She is working for McCain Collegiates in New York. Two weeks ago she is dispatched to the most crucial must-have state for Palin-McCain.
It’s late October.
What a surprise !!!
This is a bungled Karl Rove crime, I’ll bet.
I blame James Carve-ill
exactly – to say the media (and drudge in particular) has no blame in this is, imo, just wrong.
Well, after it is all said and done, I still find the image of the perp (the young lady) doing a Homer when she had realized that she had scratched the B in backwards hilarious. “DOH!” That is, if and when she ever realized it.
just did a quick sweep through the comments on a number of rethug blogs to look at some of the informed comments. a lot of their people are calling for the poor girl to be “fried” or otherwise turned into a victim of their beloved gun culture. Boy.. these people do like violence don’t they? even against their own.
Red State is all class.
Yes but, she didn’t scratch a B onto her face and make up a crazy story just to show and tell her friends about it. She wanted the news to be wide spread. Otherwise, what would have been the point?
OT, but Former Repug Governor Carlson, who has endorsed Obama, just gave some of his reasons. Amongst other things, he felt he did not put country first when he chose Palin for VP. He felt Mitt would have been putting country first. He said, “You know, it’s like Alice in Wonderland; if you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.” Wow. Obama is focused on the economy, etc. He’s Presidential. The news couldn’t be worse for McSame.
Via TPM:
McCain and Palin called this young woman?
don’t miss darkblack’s take on it.
What stupidity, to carve the B in your face backwards because you’re looking in a mirror. But this is no “blame the media” situation. The Pa. communications director for the McCain campaign sold the story to KDKA as a hate crime because this crazy girl said the imaginary perp told her he was going to “teach her a lesson” because of her McCain bumper sticker. Nuh-uh, McCainanites. This was purely YOUR doin’. You are TOAST.
db is a genius … shhh, don’t tell him I said that …
LOL!
to get attention? to hurt herself? bottom line i don’t know – none of us do. but i think we do know why it was pushed by drudge et al.
some on our side too.
Are they cynical enough to have drugged her and carved the B? Maybe she really doesn’t know how it happened. Or maybe they gave her $ to sacrifice herself. Just some thoughts.
See what I mean ?
((( db )))
Either she just wanted attention or they knew she had problems and suggested it.
Misusing the mental ill is truly vile, especially since they would rather not pay for their care when needed.
That’s really bad, Punaise! Really!
OT, but David Gregory is just about in tears contorting himself to find a way for McCain to still win.
What a sad, sick little girl. I hope she gets some deprogramming.
*Bows* to the Master !
Is that Schmuck still on TeeVee ?
CNN headline news had a psychologist on who said there are countless mentally ill people out there who actually believe the stuff that right-wing talk radio pounds into them every day for hours upon hours. They actually believe they are doing good to act out to try to prevent a terrorist from taking over the country. Scary!
She should have gone with an ‘O’ instead.
or she is mentally ill
Sure is. Down here south of the border he has his own show from 6-7 pm on MSNBC.
Peterr has a new post up: The Lord Requires An Answer on Torture
Oye ! Maybe MSNBC will see Rachel’s ratings and replace him with another smart Host … is there a limit on those in Murkah ? *g*
I nominate Marcy !
could be all of the above.
imo the big nauseating point is really the campaign’s use of her.
Ashley can suck eggs. Yelling ‘fire!’ when there’s no fire is illegal ya dumbass and had anyone gotten hurt you would have been more reviled than you are now!
It’s a good thing she didn’t pick a black guy out of a line-up to pin this on. Can you imagine? Pisses me off.
She’s quite obviously mentally ill.
The real criminals are, once again, the same people who lifted Joe the Plumber into the headlines and then blamed Barack Obama for invading his privacy — the McCain campaign. They couldn’t see what just about everybody else who looked at this story, up to and including Michelle Malkin, obviously could — there was something wrong with the girl’s story. It suited their auto-smear campaign, and they ran with it, vetting it every bit as well as they did Sarah Palin. Or not-Joe the Plumber.
Clown. Car.
I disagree. The whole thing is sad all the way around. A mentally ill girl, her dangerous and vile race baiting and the pushing of the story by the campaign. It says much about america
Hey BFL. Back from dinner.
Early voting good here, too. I voted Wednesday and my wife voted today. Both days the site was running at capacity late morning but there was no line. Just got the latest numbers for all of FL-6:
76,948 have already voted out of 519,018 in the district. Only about 6% of voters under 35 have voted yet, so we have to keep up the pressure on the youngsters. Over 27% of those over 65 have already voted.
The good news is that for registration info through Oct 1, our district has now evened up. We were 43% R and 39% D but now it’s even at 41-41. I’m liking the chances of our D challenger even more now, even though the Florida Times Union endorsed the R incumbent yesterday.
I actually think this story has kind of gotten enough MSM press (although it’s good we’re discussing it here). To date the coverage has been necessary (to make sure everybody in the country knows that the incident never occured), but now that this done, its probably time to lay off it (which MSM is generally starting to do, except for Fox which is still keeping it on page one).
The rethug meme on seems to be:
1. blame the media for daring to report the retraction/confession
2. demand that the young woman in question be subjected to all manner of bloodcurdling violence and cruelty
3. self-congratulatory – we admit when we’re wrong but all you lefties don’t
4. hint darkly that this is all somehow our fault
5. draw obscure parallels between this whole tragedy and Acorn/Ayers/Wright just to have another chance to say those three in one paragraph
It’s all sick. And I’m all the more disturbed that some on our side are calling for the girl to hurt too.
We went round and round about this downstairs, and this is exactly were I was coming from as well.
If she has mental issues, then of course she needs help.
But what about the many people she could’ve harmed along the way?
As I said before, I’m tired of being the boogie man every time somebody’s life/election isn’t going well.
LOL! I was gonna photoshop the same thing; I’m glad Darkblack did it and saved me the effort!
I concur. Everyone is plagued with some variety and some degree of mental illness. She’ll get the help she needs.
Will AA males get what they need after this? ‘Cuz that genie is ONCE AGAIN out of the bottle not to be put back in.
This whole episode is sickening to me.
I don’t know that she is “quite clearly mentally ill. She did a weird thing. One could say that she did a really, really weird thing. But! She is 20 years old. She got involved with the College Republicans and their poison politics. She’s at an age where doing weird things does not always equate to being mentally ill. In fact doing weird things is pretty much par for the course at that age.
Maybe we’ll learn more about who this person is some day, and I hope she comes out of it all right. But, I’m not ready to conclude that just because she did a weird thing that she is ‘Mentally Ill’.
We started the day with the Palin makeup cost embarassment and then the made up, racist story of the backward “B”. Two makeup stories in one day – what are the odds of that? The McCain campaign continues to make history for levels of ineptitude large and small. Even if I were a lifelong Republican I’d be hard pressed to vote for McCain just based on the post-convention daily humiliations.
I know I’m coming back to this thread late and my comment will go unread.
But I agree with Jane. She reminds me of students I’ve had over the years who cut or burned themselves. All of them were or had been seriously unwell. All of them were abuse survivors.
I would be interested in a look at this young woman’s arms.
Apparently Palin called the girl before the Pennsylvania McCain Campaign spokesman started shilling the incident to the media, though someone called the right-wing blogosphere beforehand. So this has crept all the way up the hierarchy and out to their net-roots before the MSM were contacted.
Somewhere along the way Malkin was “warned off” and there was some things on “Twitter” that seem to come from at least one of her “Team mates” that (s)he hoped that “Ashley’s lies get discovered”.
So why weren’t these concerns brought to the attention of the McCain-Palin bigwigs…why run with it.
And why suggest that it might even involve STALKING. The spokesman told the media “the alleged attacker said, “You’re with the McCain campaign? I’m going to teach you a lesson.”
One would not infer THAT from seeing a bumper sticker.
