Until now, the Obama campaign has consistently taken the position that the candidate’s coat tails were sufficient help to down-ticket races. But in the closing days of the campaign, with Republicans imploding and tearing each other apart, they’ve decided to step up their efforts:
Now, with his lead in the polls holding steady, the Illinois senator has begun to volunteer his campaign staff to assist fellow Democrats, channel funds to state Democratic parties and appear himself on the campaign trail with other candidates.
That’s good, but I hope they go further.
John Podesta, who is in charge of the transition, was here at FDL the other day and said that Democrats really need 60 votes in the Senate or there isn’t much hope for the Employee Free Choice Act.
Likewise, the contours of health care legislation or an economic stimulus package would largely be determined by Republicans like Susan Collins or Olympia Snow if the Democrats are one or two votes shy, and that would make them the new powerbrokers.
We’re just too close right now to let the opportunity slip away to let that happen. The potential is there to shut down any potential GOP filibuster in the Senate for the next 2 years.
Here’s where Pollster has the McConnell/Lunsford race in Kentucky right now:
Mitch McConnell is the glue that holds the Republicans together. He has almost single-handedly kept the Democrats on the ropes since he became Minority Leader, and he’s managed to run rings around the Democrats. Without him, the Republicans would be severely crippled. He’s in bad shape in Kentucky — he’s trending downward in the polls, and as shrewd an organizer as he is he’s never been a good campaigner.
Now is the time to take him out.
Chambliss is likewise 46.1 to Martin’s 42.2, and the gap is closing fast. Musgrove (45.6) is within shouting distance of Wicker (47.1). Franken, Merkeley and Hagen all have slim leads over their Republican opponents. A serious infusion of cash into these races could seal the deal for Obama’s ability to legislate the kind of dramatic change he has promised, and the kind of change we desperately need right now.
Obama will raise more money than he can possibly spend before election day. He shouldn’t take his eye off the ball — nothing is a lock in terms of the presidency, and his own race rightly demands all of his attention.
But if he can guarantee a loan to the DSCC, or send out a fundraising appeal to his email list on their behalf (or on behalf of Democrats in key Senatorial races), now is the time to do it.

Jane! Now to read the post. I’ll tell them you’re here!
How’s about 61?
There’s this one guy, a senator from Connecticut, that we need to maneuver around…
So long as he holds enough in reserve for the legal fights over illegal GOP voter suppression and outright vote rigging.
61 by this math. We need 61. As soon as the election is over Short Ride is changing to R and all the math till now has included him.
I DISLIKE Mitch McConnell a great deal. I’d really love to see him have more time to spend with his family.
Great post, Jane! Sure would like to see some of these Dems win, and more importantly, would love to see the last of McConnell! Chambliss is another that just deserves to go!
I would dearly love to see McConnell defeated, but in Kentucky, when given the choice between voting their pocketbook or voting their prejudices, Kentuckians usually vote their prejudices.
From the Athens, GA paper this morning:
He could never have done this without Harry Reid’s help.
I would like to see some help for the Democratic longshots, too: Rice in Oklahoma, Noriega in Texas, and Kleeb in Nebraska. Those three could benefit from a cash infusion to get the message out about their clear alternative to crazy Inhofe and Cornyn, and Bush apparatchik Johanns, respectively.
We can get past 60, and make RGJoe an irrelevant squeak, but it takes success in a longshot state or two to do it.
I love the sound of Republicans howling in frustration, if we get to 61 then we can add Short Rides high falsetto to that choir.
That would be sweet. But I’ll shock everyone here, as someone who stands behind no one in my disdain for Joe Lieberman. If he was the 60th vote and agreed to vote on all procedural votes with the Democrats and keep the GOP from being able to filibuster (he can cast his useless vote on the floor a la Alito any way he wants), I — and this is hard for me to say, but it’s true — would support him keeping his seniority.
Heads, commence exploding.
Splat.
Here in CO at the Jeffco Obama HQ we have been supporting Udall from the git go. There are three different Congressional races in the county and local offices are pushing either Perlmutter, DeGette or Polis
Absolutely — would love to see money channeled into Kleeb, Rice and Noriega too, though they are much bigger longshots.
Everyone should listen to Bernie Sanders tear into Greenspan. It’s what’s needed to be said for a very long time!
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=nBnKh6B2cMw
Greenspan is a sad, pathetic out of touch patrician whose time is over.
We could get to 60 or even 61 in the Senate, except that the electronic voting machines will switch enough votes that the Democratic majorities will not be filibuster-proof…
This is what happened in 2006, and it will happen again on Election Day.
The movie “Stealing America: Vote by Vote” is available for FREE DOWNLOAD, so watch this 90 minute documentary by Academy Nominated director Dorothy Fadiman for FREE this weekend.
*kablooey*
Even in that situation, I think Lieberman would work hard to be disappointing to Democrats.
What a lovely family it is too, with Mitch McCloset and his “wife” Elaine Chao, and well, I guess that’s it. I wonder what they do on their off-time?
Sorry Jane for being OT but everyone needs to hear Bernie Sanders.

You’re the locomotive on the Traitor Joe Disdain Train. All Aboard!
If they can’t steal the presidency, they’ll at least steal Obama’s mandate. Not that a mandate was necessary for the chimp in chief. . .
Chambliss is one of those really Ugly Rehtuglians and truly deserves to lose his seat for what he did to Max Cleland in the last election!! The tactics of hate and pure lies about Max’s patriotism, a man who gave three limbs while serving his country make Chambliss one of the worst of the bunch.
It will be refreshing to see in the future clean elections when the issues will be what matters and not the DIRT and LIES we see today!
Take a closer look at Risch and LaRocco to replace Craig. You would think it would be a slam dunk for LaRocco
but Idaho is too close to Utah and too far away from Montana.
There are a lot of DLC Dems who are Senators how many Progressive Senators do we have who can be counted on to support Obama and not sandbag him?
OT McShame here in CO getting drowned out by protest group at speech
How much cash does Obama have extra really he will need a lot to fight in court close elections stolen by the GOP.
current news stories say that Obama only raised $36M in the first 2 weeks of OCY. I just sent him another donation. Lets not let things fall off now. We are close, but remember that the polls mean nothing and that if we want Obama to win he needs money to do it. Send everything you can to help out. Lets make Oct his biggest fund raising month
Hey he was only doing Uncle Milties bidding in using the “Market will regulate it’s self” which is the failed economic theory of Milton Friedman! It is great to see that many of the early victims of these theories have tossed them out and are going in the direction of markets where everyone for the lowest workers to the CEO’s benefits from the profits of well regulated markets!
What where oh where are his angry crowds? If McCain can’t draw a crowd in CO maybe he should concede the state:)
Can i mention the House or is this SDenate only? Good news for a guy who’s been at FDL at least twice. Poll has a huge margin of error, but Alan Grayson is way over that. So is the Dem in the neighboring district (FL-24)). The ads vs. Grayson have been nasty. “Alan Grayson. He’s not one of us.” (With an old picture of Grayson in that nasty goatee.)
http://blogs.orlandosentinel.c…..on-le.html
I wish all Demcrats would begin referring to their “colleagues” on the other side of the aisle as “Republicons”. The Republicons take delight in referring to their opponents as the “DemocRat” party. Turn about is fair play and in this case calling a Republican a con is apt and instructional.
Interesting read
http://www.nypost.com/seven/10…..133374.htm
His people are there too.
Sean hanity points oput that investors Business Daily has Obama upm only 1%. Same poll has the 18-24 demographic with only 22% for Obama. hmmm.
“Republicons” “RepubliCONS”
fixed it for you:)
Actually Bush claimed a mandate back in 2000 even though he lost the popular vote (and should’ve lost the electoral vote too).
I haven’t checked the link, but The Post can be interesting. i remember when it was a respected, decent paper.
Couple of days ago McLame spoke in a hockey areana in New H. and it was only half full. Let’s see side by side photos of McLame rallies juxtaposed against Obama rallies.
Still its cool to here that he is getting drowned out.
Yeah I need a laugh!
Raven if you are here correct me if I’m in error on this. Jim Martin would be a good, solid Senator for Georgia and one that believes in progressive causes. It’s going to be hard for him to win the election though because in order to have an outright win you must have 50% of the vote. Without 50% of the vote there is a runoff where turnout tends to be low.
The comments to that article are very interesting.
As an aside, isn’t the FL-24 race with R Tom Feeney, the electronic vote stealing Republican who’s getting is bottom spanked. Yay!
Helping the House Progressive candidates is a good idea, the Blue Dogs can ask Rahm for money. They will only cower before the GOP anyway.
But whose enthusiasm is higher?
Plain is comming to Cent. Florida. She got a good crowd a few weeks back. But the McCain campaign kept putting out higher “estimates”. For this trip t5hey have her booked into a small arena in Kissimmee.
Oh man. Grayson unleashed on Capitol Hill. This would probably be the most exciting win for me of this election cycle if it happens. Let’s bring it home for him here:
http://www.actblue.com/entity/fundraisers/18665
This is unfortunately true, and I should know.
I am an expert, since I can see Ky. from Ohio.
After Obama wins the GOP probably won’t bother to show for a runoff election.
IIRC, he claimed a mandate in 2004 as well.
me too.
but i don’t think you’re going to be able to get any of the others in the D caucus to agree to that one – let alone lieberman.
Yup. he’s my rep. He used to be speaker of the FL House. Like somebody in the comments to that article sad. it’s pretty pathetic when you get your asss kicked in a district you gerrymandered for yourself with your own pen.
Yeah. i thought he was going to have trouble. Keller is really nasty and has money. people aren’t buying that shit.
Joe’s head I’ll make a Vodoo doll.
but wasn’t the mandate he claimed just about the opposite of what he had campaigned on?
Ya, I remember when news media actually reported the news instead of what people thought about the news. Also remember when news entities were semi-politically unbiased.
Re NC and the Senate race. I will be sorely disappointed if Hagan does not be Dole. Hagan campaign has been brilliantly run and Dole has been MIA, as usual for her in this state.
She has embodied the carpetbagger poltician and she must be worried by the polls showing Hagan ahead. Dole just had to put $3 million of her own money into her campaign.
Of course, I’d love to hear how someone who has never worked in the private sector has become the 7th richest senator. Her parents had a florist in a small NC town so it’s hard to imagine any of that is inherited wealth.
In his first press conference a few days after the 2004 election, Buish said it was time for him to spend his political capital. I said… where? a dollar store?
We actually do not need 60 (or 61) Dem senators. It is enough that we have the majority. The GOP has showed us why this is the case: the nuclear option. It isn’t just for judicial nominees anymore. That “option” can be exercised on ANYTHING. The Dems can simply declare filibustering to be off the table for this or that class of bill, vote for that rule change and win by simple majority, and then do whatever they want.
Seriously, the “nuclear option” needs to be turned around and CRAMMED down the GOP’s throat so deep that it immediately peeks out their asses.
The problem in KY is that Lunsford is no prize either. He jumps ship back and forth between the parties – campaigning WITH MCCONELL for Ernie Fletcher back in the day, all bc he was miffed that Chandler beat him in the Gov primary.
But Schumer came in and pretty much threatened the other primrary candidates out of the picture – they wanted Lunsford’s money. So now we get to listen to never ending ads about Lunsford’s nursing home debacles.
I guess it will be worthwhile to get rid of Mitch, but there’s not much to celebrate over if the alternative is Lunsford.
IBD is even more of a Rethug rag than the WSJ, and that’s saying something.
Hannity forgot the “0″ after the 1.
Intentionally, of course.
*snicker* Darn lousy karmic retribution. *snicker*
We need to elect Dems with a Spine first!
Jim Martin won in a runoff in the primary against Vernon Jones who had previously endorsed Bush. The problem in a run off is that white suburban rconservatives tend to vote while the others stay home. Because there are three candidates running, there will probably be a run off.
Thanks Jane.
digg
Lunsford’s a nightmare, you’re right. But it isn’t about getting him in, it’s about getting McConnell out.
Almost all polls are tightening up, not just WSJ or BD. This will happen more and more the closer we get to the election as the pollsters will have the reputations on the line. Follow the money, if a pollster is not accurate, they don’t get hired in the future.
IBD is a good paper for investment information but the editorial page is wrong.
Under Clinton the paper was a lot bigger with the ads then Bush came and the paper got so small a light breeze would blow it away.
Very hard paper to deliver in a wind storm.
I know this, but couldn’t resist taking a shot at Hannity & the IBD.
They need to do a remedial arithmatic class over at faux. Last night Billo had 1998 as twenty years ago.
Something that I have been finding rather interesting as well, Obama has been outspending McCain roughly 4:1 across the board, yet he is in a statistical dead heat looking at most polls.
Seriously, i didn’t know they did a poll. it’s 1.1 points. (.1??). It has the 18-24 year olds breaking 74-22 for McCain. His largest advantage of any age group. Hmmm. Kids support McCain 74-22. Sounds about right, yes?
http://www.ibdeditorials.com/P…..5713550536
I am not an expert but I did grow up there.
wsj was 7 or 8 today wasn’t it?
Agree.
FDL and the netroots have led the charge to drag the political center/legacy media back from the extreme right. We still have a long way to go just to get back to the center, but JoeLie, the media, and the rest of the incumbent protection rackets will follow.
Where ya gettin yer info?
Yesterday was McCain’s worst day of polling for the entire campaign.
http://www.fivethirtyeight.com…..-life.html
I think we’re in a pretty good position.
Yeah. i don’t think “most polls tightening up”. I mean, going from 8 points to 7,for example , isn’t really tightening up. I think alot of the McCain people are discouraged and think their guy is a loser. Obama people, on the other hand, are pretty psyched.
Free the Airwaves!
Call your Member of Congress and let him or her know it’s time to open “white spaces” for everyone.
Wasn’t Rep. Mahoney a Rahm Emmanuelle protege shoved down our throats over a Blue America candidate? Turning out to be a big time a-hole (story is getting worse):
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpoi…..ir_get.php
This is what happens when people don’t listen to Howie Klein and pick DLC Dems. In Howie We Trust.
Bmaz has a new post up: Erratic McCain Chicanery On “Victory” Party
Daschling McConnell would be sweet. He’s a terrible, horrible man with nothing but corporations as his constituency. Defeating him would be some of the best news this cycle, although Lunsford is no prize.
Rahm knew all that, too, you can be sure. He was happy to have Mahoney’s vote in his pocket to use whenever he needed it. How many other votes are controlled through this kind of seediness and immorality?
The threat-to-expose is the best way to control a vote. Just ask Cheney, who got pre-Veep files (deeper and broader than ever before) on every likely Veep prospect in 2000 before choosing himself for Shrub. He’s used those files judiciously; witness Spectre’s weakness.
Come on, on the Palin scale that makes you damn near ex-governor.
Seriously, my mom was from there, and I went to the Univ. of Cincy, so I’ve spent plenty of time in the Bluegrass state.
I know first hand your point re: they vote their prejudices has more often than not been true.
LOL
Yeah, that ad is just awful. I honestly couldn’t believe it when I first saw the ad
I don’t understand why the Democrats didn’t send a letter to this effect to the Republic Party:
Dear Sirs and Madams:
Due to your abundant abuse of the procedure, we have decided to revoke the rule of cloture for this session of Congress. You must now actually filibuster a bill in order to filibuster it.
All the best,
The Democratic majority
Everybody votes their prejudice, which happens to be s survival mechanism. Unfortunately the racial prejudice will be seen in all states, not just the one you are referencing. Also, why is no-one here concerned that 90% of African-Americans are voting for Obama? Is that not a ‘Racial Prejudice’?
I love it!
“..Guarantee a loan to the DSCC..“??
Sorry to disagree but Abso-fu****-lutely not! Under Schumer and Emanuels’ control their respective campaign committees deliberately targeted and supported only those candidates that appealed to their big donors. Those were also the same ‘centrists’ that joined with the Right.
This time Obama and Dean are seeing to it that the money goes directly to those real Democratic candidates chosen by their communities and constituents.
Which DO NOT include candidates of the Independent Party whom Schumer or Emanuel or Van Hollen, Emanuels pick to replace him, or their donors prefer.
We want those Democratic Senate seats and every ass that sits in ‘em to be branded with a big fat “D”, to remind them of who put it there.
You interchange the word prejudice with preference as if they are the same. Prejudice is stopping the Mexican with an older car for speeding, but letting the old white lady in the Cadillac who just passed him go free.
Whereas preference is a Latina cop letting the old lady go free because the Mexican is a very hot looking guy.
See how that works??
That’s true, and the best of all possible outcomes is that Martin wins 50%+1 in the general. But if there’s a runoff, the national attention that it garners may well work in favor of Democrats. Assuming that Obama is the president-elect, the “do we really know Jim Martin?” ads are summarily invalidated as character attacks, and a significant portion of the remaining Dem funds are made available for the race, we could have a really intense month of campaigning in GA.
Your example is sexist, not preference. Here is an example for you: A white guy going into downtown Compton, and/or areas of Detroit and expecting to live through it.
So any comment on the 90% African-American vote for Obama? Is that not prejudice?
