John McCain literally rolled his eyes when Barack Obama mentioned murdered union organizers in Colombia in his answer to a trade question during last night’s presidential debate.

Yes, he did. I’m so glad that Obama mentioned them. Yiu cannot have Free Trade / Fair Trade when the workers are being exploited. I don’t expect that McCain cares about union organizers being murdered, but I do, and I expect a lot of union workers do too.
I think that Bill Cosby’s response to eye-rolling may be appropriate. “Don’t roll your eyes at me. I’ll roll your head!”
It was a really telling moment. Who rolls their eyes at the mention of murder? Like union organizers being killed is something those annoying liberals are always harping on.
His contempt for workers could not be more clear. It’s amplified by the fact that his dismissiveness is in the context of workers being murdered.
I have decided that john mccain’s eyebrow response is the same as gore’s “sigh”
he is trying to let everyone know he disagrees with the statement or has something to add but it’s not his turn to talk
John McCain believes in Friedmanomics… he wants to be Shock Doctor in chief.
No moment outside of his coddling the needless wars, coddling the Phil Grahams of the world, demonstrates this with more certainty than last nights debate, imo.
Between that and his dismissal of concerns for a mother’s “health,” McCain, in my book, is
inchingracing towards “monster” territory (ala, Bush, Cheney, Addington and Rummy).I think McC wants to be president more than anything but hasn’t the foggiest notion why. He hasn’t bothered to learn anything in all these years, he obviously doesn’t prepare well for the campaign trail and he just wanders from one disaster to another. He is completely out of it in every respect.
Actually, McCain didn’t roll his eyes until Obama mentions that there have been no prosecutions. The subtext is, crime: okay (see Bush/Cheney), legal consequences… NOW you’re talking crazy (see Bush/Cheney).
Mc knows exactly why he wants to be prez. It’s the only way he can outshine his father & grandfather.
McCain is a member of the Church of St. Reagan so the mere mention of unions produces a physical reaction that’s difficult to contain. He’s probably glad that he avoided completely melting down and speaking in tongues.
McCain has never been in a discussion that expresses concern for labor leaders, so he was listenly very intently before he dismissed it.
I could only wonder which aide was going to catch the famous McCain grief after the debate. Was it that other Joe, Holy Joe?
Bingo, he should change his name to Oedipus T. Rex.
McCain sure knows his body language: putting “quotes” around women’s health (wimmin – you can’t live with ‘em without a prenupt, you can’t cheat on ‘em without bad press), and he rolls his eyes at working class murders. The only think missing was, “hey you kids — get off my lawn.”
The last paragraph of the NYT editorial says it all:
“On Wednesday night, Mr. McCain also ‘categorically’
defended the people at his rallies after Mr. Obama mentioned the nasty comments by a few. Mr. McCain said the person who yelled ‘kill him’, referring to Mr. Obama, was part of the ‘fringe people’ who come to
any huge rally of either party. Then he turned to Mr. Ayers and Acorn – and Mr. Obama’s work was done”.
And when has McCain had a “huge” rally?
Agreed… and he thinks being the worlds biggest Pinochet is the way to do it.
Which reminds me of another McCain Moment of Disingenuousness: he expresses concern and get well wishes for Nancy Reagan.
Nancy Reagan! The one person in his life that still represents his first wife, besides the kids. Nancy dumped all kinds of scorn on McCain and crossed him off the invite list rightfully so when he dumped his handicapped wife.
Eric Prince and his Blackwater assassins.
The anti-union plank in the Republican platform sits next to the deregulation plank. Remove any and all impediments to corporate profit, even if people’s lives or livelihood are sacrificed in the bargain.
Workers are a commodity to billionaires like McCain and his billionaire supporters. Workers should be glad to be tossed the crumbs from the tables of their benevolent masters.
For Republicans, the equality of all human beings does not exist beyond talking points. Funny how they love to talk about Christian principles. Sickening that every day the media helps them pull off the con.
That was just such a weird moment when McCain defended his supporters. No one was attacking his supporters per se.
It was like hearing a stupid and manipulative woman cry “rape” when she’s trying to get the guy who just spurned her in trouble.
My apologies for the poor choice of analogies, but there you go.
Twas a reply to eCAHNomics @ 10.
Those murdered labor leaders weren’t born into a family like McCain’s and didn’t marry a wealthy heiress. How improvident of them! Sheesh, the nerve of Obama, bringing it up like it matters or something.
***
It DOES.
murder, a woman’s health, unions, black people, poor people…. How many people can they show contempt for in one sitting?
The rethugs have been cheering the race to the bottom since the Clinton era. Lets reverse course.
Geez, you libruls. Next you’ll be saying children shouldn’t be forced to work in sweatshops.
They also weren’t smart enought to be born wealthy like Bush was.
Yes, these guys who have been in WDC too long see every discussion as I win or I lose. It’s a game to be won on the Senate or House floor. Let’s not quibble about who’s killing who.
I think he has already exceeded any family expectation
Everybody who earns less than $5 million per year. McCain accusing Dems of class warfare is straight out of the Rove playbook, accuse your opponent of your own greatest failing.
I rewound this several times last night, but my impression was that it was more of an “Oh, shit, I didn’t know that” moment for McCain rather than the disdain other have seen.
But roll the tape, it’s even funnier when Obama moves on to the Peruvian trade agreement. McCain’s eyes get big as saucers, as if to say, “Oh shit, I wasn’t prepped on that one.”
Of course I could be wrong, but that’s how I saw it.
Funny too, how Nancy became a proponent of Federal Funding for Stem Cell Research when Ronnie got sick. Now that he’s passed away, it is not an issue for Nancy anymore. Just Full Steam Ahead on the Bullshit Republican Express, right Nancy?
Don’t think they have mentioned “elitist” for some time now, or have I missed it?
It is a constant in any reference to Obama on Fox News, by implication if not stated outright.
I was surprised McCain didn’t mention that he had been a POW. I think I read that somewhere, and would have liked to have the rumour confirmed.
I thought her perfunctory “endorsement” of McShame was more than a little lacking in sincerity.
Did you not hear his closing statement?
Special ACLU/GITMO Roundtable up over at the Mothership
I think she still supports it, she’s just not at a stage in her life to wage any energetic campaigns. I always disliked Nancy but her stance on that issue in defiance of the GOP and her evident disdain for McCain increased my respect for her slightly.
lol. Got me there.
That’s what I mean, improvident. God just does not shine his favor down on those who chose to be born to parents who aren’t rich. Must learn your Prosperity Gospel lesson for the day:
John 10: 10: “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”
[I have to add here: Bong Hits for Wodin.]
His contempt for workers is the same contempt every capitalist has.
If a worker lives long enough to retire then that worker hasn’t really worked hard enough. They expect us all to work until we drop dead and by making health care less available and more expensive and not enforcing workplace safety compliance through OSHA they have been pretty successful.
As far as they’re concerned no one should retire comfortably except them.
I don’t know exactly what that look on McCain’s face signified, but I didn’t like it. It was disrespectful to the union workers of Columbia and to those in this country that are appalled by the murders, and respect the unionists who keep on working in conditions where colleagues are murdered. Well good for Obama for bringing that up about the free trade agreement.
I think he was disrespectful of Obama for treating the deaths of union organizers as anything important enough to mention.
Good thing Obama voted against Breyer for the Supreme Court

I did not see that, Lindsay. Thank you for pointing that out. Not only id I miss it, but this is the first I’ve heard about it.
Earlier this year I wrote about the danger of being a labor activist in Colombia. It’s the most dangerous country on the planet for labor activists, and one of the most dangerous places on the planet among all classes of people. Being Latino it always bothers me how many Americans think the news ends at the border with Mexico. Almost everyone I ever talk to knows only two things about Colombia: coffee and cocaine come from there.
McCain = scumbag
Then it’s “trickle down” disrespect.
You have a typo, I think.
Columbia -> Colombia
McCain’s inner 14-year-old came to the fore with that eyerolling.
