Los Angeles’ mayor Antonio Villaraigosa joined a slew of stars Sunday at the Sky Bar to say No on 8. Hizzoner gave $25K to the cause, and with an impassioned speech, got the crowd–which included Chad Allen, Heather Tom, Eric McCormack, Dana Delaney, and Loni Anderson–fired up, and hopefully inspired them to give, give, give more than their $100 admission.
This makes me almost forgive Mayor T0ny Vee for going to the Dodger game last night with Barbra Streisand while the Valley erupted in flames.
Here’s what some of the celeb attendees had to tell Out in Hollywood about saying No on 8:
Eric McCormack (Will & Grace):
Ignorance can’t win over intelligence forever. It has for the last eight years but eventually it’s not going to. I think of an issue like this the same as civil rights and we’ll look back in 20 years and say, "Remember when gay men and women couldn’t get married?
Chad Allen (St. Elsewhere):
I’m shocked by how many people who still don’t know what Proposition 8 is or why we’re voting on it. A lot of people will say to me, ‘What? They can’t do that. How could they do that?’ So, I’m scared to death that our message won’t get out fast enough, clear enough and large enough before November comes. It’s ridiculous to me that we’re up against $26 million or more of out state money from people who don’t live in the state of California who feel that it is right and fair that they should send their dollars to defeat my happiness here.
Loni Anderson:
In all of my career, I’ve had so many gay friends who have been with their partner for a long, long time and unable to make that choice. High school and college for me were in the 60s so we were marching, we were protesting, we were sitting we were standing. It was all about human rights and we fought for a lot of them. And then you think 40 years later that we’re still fighting, it’s just overwhelming. People should be able to marry, whoever they choose. It’s not affecting anyone else, it’s only affecting that people who want to get married.
Despite her hugely vaunted love of "the gays", Kathy Griffin did not attend. Or donate. And still no dough from Ellen or Elton either…
