The Faux news crowd are in high whine mode because Newsweek didn’t retouch Sarah Palin’s photo on their latest cover. This is supposed to be somehow grossly unfair, that the American public might see Palin for who she really is, without benefit of airbrushing or photoshopping.
Perhaps they had something like this in mind:
On the morning of Wednesday July 2, 2008 the Fox & Friends show on the conservative Fox News channel aired photos of New York Times staffers Jacques Steinberg and Steven Reddicliffe. The photos had been altered to make the men look less attractive. Their teeth were yellowed, ears enlarged, dark circles placed beneath their eyes, etc. The intent was evidently satirical. Bill O’Reilly of Fox News later admitted Fox News was making fun of the men. However, viewers were not informed of the alterations. The New York Times said the doctored photos were "beneath comment."
Fox does know a thing or two about retouching. In Fox world photos have no value for the sake of documentation or journalism, they are — like the news itself — only something to be manipulated for propaganda purposes.
I’d be sympathetic if Newsweek went out of its way to make Palin look haggish or paint her in a bad light, but the photo on the cover just makes her look real. She’s running for the Vice Presidency, not trying to win a beauty pageant.
At least that’s what they’re saying, anyway.

FOX should be shut down for their unreported contributions to the GOP.
They are propaganda, pure and simple.
Propaganda? NFW.
That could only be a piece of performance art. It must be. There’s no way we could have gone that far around the twist in this country.
Right?
RIGHT?
Oh, dear FSM!

This is beyond ridiculous. Whining that this is unfair because they showed what she actually looks like? Give me a break.
I don’t get it What did the photo show? That Palin has wrinkles? Is that it?
Now, isn’t that sexist? To expect a lady’s pic to be retouched when we need to focus on what she’s saying? Or would they whine that Condy Rice’s pic wasn’t retouched either? Oh, wait, Sarah Palin is running because of her looks. We silly voters tend to forget the details.
ok.. now this is just getting Naziesque isn’t it? Altering photos to make dissidents and other enemies of the state less attractive (more stereotypically Jewish in Nazy Germany, for example)… is really “beneath contempt” Who are these un-American thugs at Faux?
I think it’s the whiskers on her lip, ever hear of Moose Jaw?
Here is a link to the Newsweek story with some photos…I guess the middle photo isn’t very flattering…:

Cosmetic politics? Seems so politically correct.
Cover Girl Cosmetics for aspiring politicos….The wink the right side of her face went Pentecostal hard to touch up.

WATB’s fer sure.
They sure do a lot of crying.
I suppose they had better get used to it.
Heh heh heh.

Gawd, I can’t find the cover, but I wonder if there’s a big bugger there or something…heh.
The way they are going on about it in the video is pretty funny…”unwanted facial hair”…
Pl…ease…
OMFG. This is NEWS? They’re wasting bandwidth and publicly-owned airwaves on THIS??
Cheese-on-rice. We are on the verge of a freaking depression and they are worried we’re going to see that ignorant harridan’s pores and facial hair??
For over a well over decade there’s been an uproar about retouching of photos and how it gives women all sorts of self-image issues. Now a photographer gets up close, personal and honest with Palin, warts and all (metaphorically speaking; it’s doesn’t look like she has any warts) and there’s outrage because she looks real. facepalm.jpg
Um, and really isn’t it what she says and does, not how she looks? I dont recall Margaret Thatcher being elected on the strength of her shapely legs in high heels *wink*
Skank.
“She’s running for the Vice Presidency, not trying to win a beauty pageant.” No, Jane – actually the way she’s been dressed, made up etc., the way McCain leers over her, etc. — I think they’ve really turned the VP candidacy into a beauty pageant. She’s being treated as a decorative object and that is what she will be expected to do if they are elected…perhaps they have someone else in mind who will do the heavy lifting?
Completely predictable. There will be several more of these “issues” before Nov 4. Anything they can find to distract from the major problems us Liberals are going to have to solve. Especially ones where they can get multiple angles out of it, so anything about the evil LIBRUL media will work very nicely.
Nothin says “Presidential” like stilettos, peek-a-boo toes, and above-the-knee skirts while “on the clock.”

“Palin is on the ticket because she connects with everyday Americans. It is not shocking to learn that politics played a big role in the making of a presidential team (ticket-balancing to attract different constituencies has been with us at least since Andrew Jackson ran with John C. Calhoun, a man he later said he would like to kill). But that honest explanation of the rationale for her candidacy—not her preparedness for office, but her personality and nascent maverickism in Alaska—raises an important question, not only about this election but about democratic leadership. Do we want leaders who are everyday folks, or do we want leaders who understand everyday folks? Therein lies an enormous difference, one that could decide the presidential election and, if McCain and Palin were to win, shape the governance of the nation.”
From the Newsweek article.
Seems that the foxies would be complaining more about what’s INSIDE the magazine- but alas- they don’t GET that far.

Every chance you get, write to reporters to ask why they are not covering Palin’s association with the Alaska Independence Party – a secessionist (i.e. treasonous) party that her husband belonged to for years. She videotaped a “welcome” message for their 2008 convention! (Wished them “good luck!”)
It’s really horrifying to me that no one is taking this seriously. Abraham Lincoln must turn over in his grave every time she uses him name.

I think Newsweek adding the Snidely Whiplash goatee and monocle might have been a bit excessive, however….
our political discourse is sooooooo stupid.
thanks Jane for shining a light on just how stupid it has become
The next attack on Obama will be that he is secretly a commie pinko…it’s already out there…the shoe hasn’t dropped yet. Just sayin’.
Goopers complaining that the cover is not jack offable enough? Pity
Shit- that’s been the charge all along-
Covering the issues with cosmetics:
No talking points..no worries…repugs change the subject. The flip side is there campaign is futile. They have adopted Obama’s “Change” and today McInsane is preaching saving homeowners as if it were his idea. They are morally bankrupt.
Isn’t that in Saskatchewan?
Yeah, but now they have a little piece of archival paper that they will attempt to use as “proof”. I don’t want to say what it is….because it probably made up.
Are these the same people that called Obama an elitest 672 slurs ago
“because it is probably made up.”…Geesh.

Paulson, their man from wall street is socializing the banks and markets.
Their empty “Free Market” meme is bankrupt.
The New World Order…it DAR…please schedule the funeral. A pig with lipstick is still a pig. The “Free Market” has crashed and McCain’s presidential campaign with it.
Typical – the economy is tanking and all Fox Noise can twitter about is ‘untouched photos’ of Governor Palin – wait aren’t we supposed to pay attention to her intellect?
It looks bad, but you can’t see it on television? Huh? Don’t you have zoom lenses? I’d get it if they said, you can’t see it on the radio, but television? It’s a visual medium, for crying out loud!

now how is McCain supposed to be able to run a campaign on the boogey man Obama if the damn pesky economy keeps getting in the way?
lol
Kos has a diary that says that Obama has a transition team in place and McCain doesn’t even have one at all. What’s up with that?
I’m getting concerned that W will claim a national emergency soon…

What transition would there be.
This is just par for the course. Obama has always been prepared and Mccain is flying by the seat of his pants. I don’t want anymore of that shit. i want someone who pays attention to detail
So does the whole world…sigh.

Wow! This is pivitol stuff to the election! Such important vote deciding stuff! ….This is a diversion. What she looks like to me, with or without the cover, is an incapable candidate with radical right wing views. That’s what counts and what needs to be said. Stay on point.
Here’s something else to take note of on Faux News:
Today – CNN, MSNBC, and FAUX all covered Barack Obama’s speech live.
He was outdoors, in the bright mid-day sunshine.
When you watched on CNN and MSNBC, you saw a man standing in
the sunlight, his face and crowd behind him clearly lit up
in that sunshine.
When you watch the exact same feed on Faux, you saw the entire
picture darkened – from Obama himself to the crowd behind him.
It looked like cloudy weather on a dark day.
Are we to believe that Faux News isn’t standing in the exact
same sunshine as all the other news outlets? Perhaps their cameras
have an “auto-darken” feature, and the others don’t?
Oh wait – auto-darken…yup, that’s exactly what’s going on.
Let’s make sure the viewers know the scary black man is on TV again….
Anyone else notice this today?
