Katie Couric’s interviews with Sarah Palin made a feeble boost in CBS’s ratings this week, gaining the CBS Evening News only about 10 percent in audience from the previous week. The newscast averaged just under 6 million viewers for the week, up from 5.44 million.
Worse, the ratings were actually down from the same week the year before when Couric’s program drew about 6.2 million viewers.
But don’t fret Katie! You’re still being watched. Only not on TV.
Last Wednesday’s Palin/Couric interview has been seen more than 1.4 million times on YouTube, while the parody of the interview on “SNL” was viewed more than 4 million times on NBC.com.
The interview has been viewed in full more than 600,000 times on YouTube and watched in shorter clips, snippets and parodies in Fair Use many more hundreds of thousands of times, according to the New York Times.
Expect more online material from Couric-Palin. And plan on seeing Joe Biden hit the laptop screen too. Katie will ask the same question for Palin and her vice presidential opponent on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Expect they’ll be hitting the web in straight and satirical versions within minutes.

I love how Katie has become a sidekick in the parodies of Palin, that she has been seen hundreds of thousands who didn’t tune in for the interview itself. Palin via Youtube drastically shifted the perspective on how we become informed of current events.
It’s like the populist theaters of Rome where current events were shown as comic plays, the satirical pamphlets of London and Paris in the 18th century.
