Several hundred protesters rallied against Bush’s proposed bailout in Manhattan’s financial district today. Protesters heaped their old magazines, vacuum cleaner hoses, knickknacks and other distressed assets under the back end of the iconic Wall Street Bull statue and offered to sell them to Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson.
The motto of the day was, "Buy my shitpile," likely an allusion to Atrios’s famous nickname for the subprime mortgage debacle. Protesters said they wanted a chance to sell their bad investments back to the government for millions of dollars, just like the Wall Street bankers.
This bit of street theater was intended to underscore the message that ordinary people need a bailout and not just corporations, Asked what message he hoped to send, activist Andrew Boyd said, "We hope to show that Americans all across the country beginning to realize what this means, that we’re basically foreclosing on our future. We want people to take a long breath and make sure that Main Street is prioritized in this crisis."
The protest had no official sponsor. Contingents from numerous progressive groups were on hand including Code Pink, Billionaires for Bush, and a well-dressed group who identified themselves simply as "bankers."
The demonstration was catalyzed by an email sent out by a freelance journalist to a group of influential and politically active friends. Organizers said the protest took shape over the last 72 hours as the meme went viral.
I was at the protest and took pictures. Check out the album here.

Franks on MSNBC commenting on bailout meeting
One has to wonder why there weren’t thousands at the protest.
House Republicans have nixed the deal according to Barney Frank. The market will tank tomorrow. Frank said that McCain should go debate and stop gumming up the owrks.
Thanks Lindsay for the pictures and letting us know how it went!
The stock market will tank tomorrow.
I know. It is depressing but it’s possible it didn’t reach the Internet in time to get people out there.
zed
I would have been out there (if I lived in NY)
Interesting, that bull looks kind of like a pig from that angle.
Yes you would have! Me too.
This is so Cool!
House Repugs want capital gains tax cut!
OT: per TPM
He was lying again…what a surprise
and less regulation..HELLO that got us in the mess in the first place
Always nice to see your photos Lindsay.
Whats the latest polls on the bailout? Bush and Rove are all about the polls?
Why wasn’t the police busting heads like at the GOP Convention?
“So, a few months before October in 1929, J.D.Rockefeller, Bernard Baruch and other insiders quietly exited the market. And on October 24th, 1929 the New York financiers who furnished the margin loans started calling them in, in mass. This sparked an instantaneous massive sell off in the market for everyone who had to cover the margin loans. It then triggered a mass bank runs for the same reason, in turn collapsing over 16,000 banks enabling the conspiring international bankers to not only buy up rival banks at the discount but to also buy up whole corporations at pennies on the dollar. It was the greatest robbery in American history. But that didn’t stop there.”

Yeah, after 8 years of unchecked executive power, this all appears designed to effectively bind the hands of the next president before they’re even elected.
and stop gumming up the owrks.
Barney’s accent is getting to where it’s hard to understand him any more… *g*
Investment, commercial banks borrow $218 billion from Fed

When is the press gonna really jump on McCain. He’s stupid, senile, a liar and doesn’t even know what he believes in. And Palin is an embarrassment to women and humans in general. They think she’s presidential timber? That’s not even a bad joke.
Where are the adults. The R’s are crashing and burning after wrecking the nation in 8 short (too long) years while making 1% of the population obscenely wealthy.
There should be a revolt on Nov 4, but the pigs will probably taser everyone who goes near the polls and toss 1000’s in jail and suspend the election.
The then the real revolution comes.
Overwhelming against using our money for wall street is where the polls are.
I don’t understand him at all
thanks lindsay!
jayt, your date is waiting for you downstairs.
it’s the lisp or other speech impediment that’s much more difficult than the accent, IMO
Democrats are once again getting played by Bush.
This is almost comical at this point. Barney Frank just lisped his way through an incoherent ad-hoc press conference in which he basically said. … House Republicans are seizing the moral high ground while we just sit here and once again get fucked by Bush.
At this point, it’s clear Democrats enjoy it.
jayt, your date is waiting for you downstairs.
yeah – I saw.
Dinner’s a deal-breaker.
guffawed when I heard that –
I know Boehner is as dumb as a box of rocks, but does he really want his guys and gals facing their constitutents after asking for yet another tax break for rich folks ?!?!? – yeah it sounds like their usual crap, but I suspect it’s a bone Boehner threw to the McCain campaign – as that is about their only consistent taking point
I’ll pony up $5 if a few other people will….
A bit more on the JP Morgan “buyout” of Washington Mutual. There is far more to this than meets the eye.
Apparently Washington Mutual’s valuable components were suddenly seized (I assume through “eminent domain”) by the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT without the knowledge of the Board of Directors!!!! They weren’t even given a chance to file an injunction in court to block it! And then the FEDS sold them to JP Morgan (Arrrgh! Avast, Mateys!”)!
I mentioned something yesterday how the new Supreme Court ruling might allow just such powers…and now BushCo is actually using them. Yep! The Supremes approved the state seizing property and then handing it over to a private entity if they deem it is “in the public good.” And in Bush-speak that definition of “public good” might have some pretty wide latitude.
Biggest Nationalisation of any firm in human history! National Corporate Socialism!
The chairman of the Board of WashMu apparently was informed of the takeover while on a flight b/w NYC and Seattle.
JP Morgan Acquires WAMU
Sounds like he should get together with Bob Dylan. It would be a conversation made up of nothing but Huhs?
Print those $10K bills, and roll ‘em out on pallets and just give ‘em away!
The dems are trying to let the Repukes look like they are obstructionists on the economy. But the sky will not fall over this.
What we do need is someone to explain what the crisis actually is. If it’s about confidence and trust, let them work it out themselves and get comfortable with each other. If they are insolvent… let them fail.
Hi Bets! Speaking of downstairs, Phoenix Woman also sends you a “Howdy.”
Shocking.
People should now run WaMu and put their money in a credit union.
can jayt use a few to buy dinner for his date?
OT: CNN replaying the Couric interview with Palin. I had not seen it tonight. She garbled something about Russia, etc etc etc. air space, Dear God. I hope she goes somewhere to listen to herself so she may know she cannot make sense. What do she and McLiar talk about? I know, this is scary.
What a weird day! Oregon State is leading USC 21-0 at the half.
it’s not the bucks – it’s the principle. I’m a cheap date in all senses of the phrase…
heh.
talk??? they barely know each other!
Facism right before our eyes… WaMu is and FDIC bank.. let JP take the junk and the feds can pay the depositors and close the bank. Oh but that’s not the plan… the US gov is to buy the junk… no questions asked.
There’s a lot of unlawful shit going down. Someone has to stop this.
Put me down for, DJI -600
Palin is trailer trash bimbo. She’s actually more like a character from a comedy routine than a real person… or a governor…
What’s with the citizens of Alaska?
A recall?
thank you – dear gaia!
and isn’t Wachovia next on the ‘deeply troubled’ list ?
What do she and McLiar talk about?
Bridges to Nowhere in both Alaska and Sedona, shakin’-up-and-fixin’, snowmobiling, extra-marital affairs…?
McCain’s Bottom Line: No Deal = No Debate
If McCain skips the debate, I think the election is almost over. Or will McCain try to spin it that this shows how bad it was for Obama to refuse bogus townhall circuses. Why not give it a try? McCain could get a photo op throwing tomatoes at a greedy investment banker too.
The kicker is that the campaign position is currently no VP debate if no financial deal. That will be worse. If two debates get cancelled because of this silly stunt, I think McCain is finished.
McCain’s Bottom Line: No Deal = No Debate

The MSM is catching on, even Candy Crowley.
And looks like Mc has stayed up really late tonight; not a good thing for him. What are we watching here?
And AC said of the Palin soundbite: “You’ll have to see it to believe it.”
and isn’t Wachovia next on the ‘deeply troubled’ list ?
No – I’ve decided that I’m opening a bank – tomorrow.
I’ve already got the requisite liquidity problems….
Anybody need a loan they can’t repay? I should be open by noon.
Who’s picking up the check?
I agree but what will crazy McCain pull next to get people to stop talking about the debates? I bet he might screw Bush and oppose the bailout, unless there is something else crazy he can do?
I think the funny thing is that he’s trying to make a deal and nobody is bothering to even answer him. It’s as if no one cares whether he shows up or not. It’s really quite odd.
Saw a piece (CBS or CNN, not sure which) where reporter said straight out that McCain’s proposal at the White House meeting today was more deregulations and lower corporate taxes. That put him in league with the most reactionary House GOPers.
McCain did not finesse it with his stunt. I think McCain hoped that the stunt would take focus away from his financial bail out flim flam or at least fuzz it up enough so that the voters would not pay attention. Also quoting Dems and Republicans that McCain was not helpful. Whether that last bit is good or bad for McCain, I don’t know.
Go Beavers!!! Did a couple years at Oregon State. Great school.
I think the press at this point is going to be unable to put lipstick on the McCain Palin ticket. it looks like a loser and smells like a loser and they are acting like losers… they ARE losers.
Can I be your Bank of Jayt lobbyist, for say $15,000 a month. I promise to not do any work.
“Our next door neighbors are foreign countries….” I may weep.
“They are right there next to our state.”
I’m a Texan and lived here most of my life…Can I be Ambassador to Mexico?
Try this for a bailout — it came to my inbox through my personal network.
Share it if you like it — maybe to your local Obama campaign office, hmmm?

I wish I could claim this idea, but it belongs to one of my neighbors.
Instead of the $700 billion ‘bail-out’ plan, send $1 million to every household in the US, with the requirement that the first use they make of the money be to pay off their mortgage. They can do whatever they want with the remainder. This would repair the ‘toxic debt,’ AND provide the economy with a huge burst of consumer spending. And, the banks could start issuing new mortgages again!
Remember, this is about a fairly cheap, simple fix, not about fairness, so it doesn’t address eliminating illegal immigrants, providing equity between the single and multiple person household, or any of those other considerations.
If you like it, please pass it on.

OT: American and Pakistani troops exchange fire on Afghan border
lovely.
This wasn’t reported by the MSM but a Nat Geo writer was at Ground Zero and asked her a question and here is how she replied:
“I personally believe… that U.S. Americans are unable to do so… because…
Uh… some people out there in our nation don’t have maps…
And… uh… I believe that our education, like such as in South Africa and… uh… the Iraq, everywhere, like, such as…
And I believe that they should…
Our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S… uh…
Or, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries…
So we will be able to build up our future… for our [children].”
i have no equity at all and bunch of part time jobs. do i qualify?

Cross your heart?
okay, you’re in.
you’ll take back-dated checks, right?
dude, anyone looking for the serious gubmint cheddar has to have the requisite solvency issues
The Feds have seized WaMu. It’s the largest bank failure in U.S. history.
Thought we were referring to McCain and Palin, which one(s) are you dating?
“some people in our nation don’t have maps”
Is this woman insane? What does that have to do with anything and how does she know they don’t have maps? If this were not a serious time, I would be laughing 24/7.
i have no equity at all and bunch of part time jobs. do i qualify?
You *are* my market.
You might have to dump some of the jobs though.
Trojans and Beavers about to get it on.
Palin reminds me of a character from “Earl” – like Earl’s ex-wife.
So the bailout deal seems dead for now that frees McCain to debate right?
Reuters:
McVain has realized that there is a difference of only two letters between “whine” and “win.” He’s therefore determined to do at least one of those.
I believe that wannot Gov. Palin but this young lady, Lauren Caitlin Upton. Miss Something-or-other, judging by the sash.
I owe WAMU more money than they owe me.
Spot on you nailed it.
Bank of Jayt. Would the ticker symbol be BJ?
Of course. Wanna see my stock rise?
not to worry. i don’t actually report half of them.
I got this on CD a couple years ago from Alternative Radio and listened to it again a few days ago. It can be downloaded as an mp3 for 5 bucks. Well worth the money.
Michael Parenti “Fascism: The False Revolution”
See if this speech recorded in 1995 couldn’t have been given yesterday.
Would simply create massive inflation.
The pigs are in the banks.

FYI, new FDL post.

Just three letters short of blankets.
the largest Bank Failure in US History – just stunning
Buchanan and Harding heartily welcome Hoover in to the “Thank God We’re Not Bush! club
One million to each and every American. We can pay off our debts, begin investing in green technologies and jump start the economy. Much cheaper than saving the fat asses of the fat cats and aristocrats.
See how you are?
I won’t even hint at what Rat and I did downstairs with the whipped cream.
Nope. Nope. Too late.
Mine want first to stand in my lap and shred my pant legs then do that cute little curl up and nap thing.

my social life is sooo off by just a minute or two….
Got a little left on my whiskers…:)
purrrrrrrrrrr.
see now, we would have told ya if you were willing to spring for dinner for one of them.
On NPR headlines, WaMu shares fell to $0.43 per share in after hours trading. They had fallen to a buck something during the day.
Well, thanks, I was laughing so hard and it felt so good to imagine, I needed to know.
“McVain has realized that there is a difference of only two letters between “whine” and “win.” He’s therefore determined to do at least one of those.”
There’s no I in TEAM…and somebody needs to tell McCain there’s no HE in WIN.
Plus I realized it would not reform the system, which is what is really needed. Sure was fun to think about, though!
The e-mail calling for a protest was sent out on Sunday night. That wasn’t much time for people to make arrangements to get there.
They didn’t have enough warning to get organised, either…Har…
Bush is Lucy, setting up the political football.
The Congressional Democrats are Charley Brown, moronically convinced they have no choice but to once more try and kick the ball.
But this time, instead of Bush snatching the ball away, it’s McCain who intercepts the play, grabs the ball and runs with it to the opposite goal line.
The score: Bush and the Democrats look like a losing “team” while McCain boasts of saving the taxpayers’ $700 billion.
And Barney Frank is once again revealed to be a capitulating tool.
Bank take-overs and mergers are tough on employees. I know from personal experience. The only bright spot is that they take a long time so there’s time to adjust and plan. What complicates that is that the Republics have screwed up the economy so badly that planning is difficult.
