Alleged war criminal Henry Kissinger will give VP candidate Sarah Palin a crash course in foreign policy this week in New York:
But it is likely that Mr. Kissinger, a close outside adviser to Mr. McCain’s campaign, will give Ms. Palin a broad overview of international affairs, focusing particularly on Russia, China and the Middle East. Mr. Kissinger, who was national security adviser and secretary of state in the Nixon and Ford administrations, is regularly called on by Mr. McCain for advice on foreign affairs.
But Mr. Kissinger differs with Mr. McCain on some key aspects of foreign policy, including his support for direct American negotiations with Iran without conditions. [NYT]
The McCain campaign won’t say what Kissinger and Palin will talk about. The campaign’s lack of candor is cause for concern. Over and above his history as a unindicted war criminal, Kissinger has potential conflicts of interests that should make us wonder what he’s writing on Palin’s blank slate.
Kissinger is the chairman of the international strategic consulting firm, Kissinger Associates, Inc. His clients are select multinational corporations. Current and former KAI clients include American International Group, Coca Cola, and JP Morgan Chase. Kissinger also chairs the internal advisory board of AIG, the insurance giant that received an $85 billion bailout from the US taxpayers last week.
We know that Palin is scheduled to talk to president Uribe of Colombia about trade issues this week in New York. Kissinger and Associates belongs to the Council of the Americas, a powerful corporate coalition that advocates for free trade in the Americas.
We have a right to know what Kissinger is telling Palin in his "broad overview" of foreign policy issues.

Anyone but me have the thought that McCain is using Palin to rejuvenate his evangelical base to get elected with the distinct thought in mind of throwing her under the bus if he gets elected? She’s obviously unqualified for the office and they know it.
Why not use her to get elected, then conveniently unleash the troopergate scandal, or some other, to get her to resign the position. Neat, then McCain gets to replace her with someone more qualified after he’s elected.
She’s a young earther – I wonder if she is a flat earther as well. Could be fun to find out.

Can anyone tell me why Kissinger is supposed to be this genius, or elder statesman, or whatever he is? What the hell did he do in foreign policy that was so great? He helped Nixon drag out the Vietnam war for four pointless years, he cemented alliances with some of the world’s worst despots (some of whom he helped install) and thereby earned us the everlasting enmity of millions, and the much-vaunted outreach to China and Russia amounted to partially undoing the damage that his boss had done during the Red-baiting years.

I know that Ms. Palin, when introduced to Mr. Uribe, president of Colombia, will ask how he likes living so close to Harlem, and whether Columbia’s Lions will beat Harvard or Princeton this year.
Mr. Uribe, informed of Ms. Palin’s extensive travel, will tactfully reply that he enjoys meeting coffee buyers in Haarlem when traveling to Amsterdam, that the national sport of Colombia is football, but that Americans call it soccer, and that his favorite team in Bogota, regretfully, has no scheduled games against the Lions, the Crimson, or the Tigers.
Softening the pains of the learning process, Mr. Uribe will assure Ms. Palin that he and his cabinet reminisce fondly about their Ivy League school days, even as they send their sons and daughters to Tsinghua, Bangalore and the Grande Ecoles, the better to help Colombia compete in the world’s great race.
As if on cue, Ms. Palin will gab about her husband hoping to compete in next year’s Idiot-arod sledding race, at which Mr. Uribe will quietly urge Ms. Palin to smell the aromas of the wonderful coffees his staff have so thoughtfully laid out for them. Ms. Palin will giggle about it being dark and grainy rather than powdery white, then, perhaps a decibel too loudly, ask for decaf and the milk jug.
