During an interview in Miami earlier this week with Spanish-language station Union Radio, a reporter asked McCain whether, if elected, he would receive Zapatero in the White House. McCain answered, "Honestly, I have to analyze our relationships, situations, and priorities, but I can assure you that I will establish closer relationships with our friends, and I will stand up to those who want to harm the United States." [TIME]
Awkward… The alternative hypothesis is that McCain really does reject Spain as an American ally. As Sam Stein notes, the interviewer gave McCain multiple chances to backtrack, but Maverick McCain insisted that he was going to meet with friends and reject those who were out to harm America. I guess McCain forgot that Spain’s in NATO.

About FDL Action
McCain’s right on top of it, or something.
Everytime I see an article like this, I think of McBush on “Are you smarter than a 5th grader?”. And I laugh.

My Friends, on my orders, the liberation of Spain has begun.

Does McC expect us to be attacked by Spain? The man is hopeless – Viva!
Hola, Lindsay, gracias!
Did anybody ask Senator McDimwit “if the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain?”
I wonder what it would take for mccain to realize he no longer has the intellectual capacity he once had and not nearly the facilities to be president
he might actually be more intellecutally inept then bush if he takes office
that is frightening
McCain still hasn’t gotten over his treatment by Spain during the Spanish-American war.
whatever latino vote mccain might have recieved should be effetively eliminated..IF the democrats use this info the way it needs to be used
Wow. He really does need Lieberman whispering to him when he’s forced to answer questions. Get Joe back on the capaign now!
Bom dia pups
Mr and I listened to the spanish interview last night and couldn’t breathe because of all the laughing. then embarassment set in and eventually fear (that this man could be elected)
She flat-out told McSame, “… I’m not talking about Latin America any more, I’m talking about Europe. Would you meet with the government of Spain?”
And McSame goes right on with glossorhea about meeting with our allies and friends and not our enemies.
You really can’t possibly make this stuff up!

I don’t know what is worse, that he didn’t even know who the man is or that he thought Spain was in South America
cute vid to go with the post
Maybe McCain is misremembering Monty Python’s “NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition!” skit as Spain today.
Has someone emailed this to Doc for his list?
And then again al qeada is being trained in Iran.
the pain in Spain is mainly John McCain
Buenos dias Sra Wobblybits.
Me pregunto si McCain sale de su pasaporte la próxima vez que él visita New México?
You have to admit it has wonderful comic value. Maybe TDS will do something on it – if they haven’t already.
You have to love Zapatero’s response (reported over at TPM)

“The Real Scoop On Palin’s Staged Town Hall Meeting — Another Pretend Moment!
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/
So, what was the catch? Unlike most town-hall events, which are open to the public, include diverse crowds, and no one needs an advance invitation, this event was for ticket-holders only. And the only way to get a ticket was through the local Republican Party, after an advance RSVP. No wonder Palin was prepared to play “stump the candidate” — it was a very friendly crowd that had no interest in testing her.
It doesn’t exactly sound like a vote of confidence in the candidates’ ability to answer tough questions, does it?”
How long will the GOP continue to get away with lying, cheating and deceiving the American people?
Nao tem problema — I knew what you meant LOL. Nice thing about speaking Portuguese is that it is so close to spanish that I have no problems understanding.
That was simply the generic answer of a man who doesn’t understand the question. I doubt that McCain knows who Zapatero. So rather than embarrass himself by asking he gave prepackaged generic answer that sounded both innocuous and relevant. He does that a lot.
Embarrassed by what?
New Mexico Magazine has a monthly feature, One of our fifty is missing. It consists of true stories about the clueless who don’t realize that NM is the buffer that separates two of nation’s laboratories for bad public policy: Texas and Arizona.
We’re very accustomed to folks asking if they’ll need a passport to visit, do the natives speak English, out-of-state vendors telling us they have to charge us extra because of the customs issues (and that we’ll be responsible for any tariffs, and that because it’s being shipped out of the US the items are not returnable, etc.)
So it wouldn’t surprise me at all if McCain got out his passport the next time he visits Albuquerque.
Excuse me? Arizona is one of the country’s labs for bad public policy? Our Dem Governor might not agree. Neither would our Dem AG. Maybe prior administrations.
OT: Per HuffPo:
Thanks for the link. A friend’s husband is a staunch Republican, i.e. won’t change his mind. He also served in the US Navy in Spain and remembers fondly his time there. I’ve emailed the WaPo story to his wife. Who knows, we may end up with another Obama vote.
Can you drink the water there or do you have to buy bottled?
Sorry, Ann. Prior Admins were what I had in mind. Evan Meacham in particular.
Apologies to Governor Napolitano and the AZ lege…
IMHO, such a realization takes more than his residual intellectual capacity.
Don’t drink the bottled water. We fill it from the taps… los gringos can’t tell the difference.
Jane’s up with a new post entitled “John McCain’s Human Shield, Sarah Palin, Starting To Crack!”
Sounds like New Mexicans should have a lot of conversations with folks from Hawaii.
When I was stationed there, just about every week, local columnists would offer “statehood awards” to mainland pundits, politicians, celebrities etc who would say something about leaving the US to visit Hawaii (or whatever variation dribbled out of the mouth)
That was always a standard Q when I was there, and they were filled from the taps
Well, pretty much all the Rethug Admins were bad, not the least of which was Fife Symington, who was also tossed out of office over ethics. That is before he went to jail. Apology accepted.
Esay bruddah…
I’ve got the best of both worlds … born in Honolulu, now a long-time New Mexico resident. And I do remember as a kid hearing people say stupid sh*t about leaving the US to go to Hawai’i.
McCain’s strength supposedly is foreign policy, but he clearly doesn’t understand the implications of dealing with America’s allies, much less its enemies. All McCain had to say was, “America stands with its allies in NATO, and Spain is a strong defender of freedom, blah, blah, blah.” But he completely fucked it up…so now the campaign has to spend all day trying to convince us of what the Senator meant to say.
I’d like to see Biden nail McCain on this one-not for the comic effect, but for the failure to understand the complexities of U.S. foreign policy. Coupled with Palin’s “I can see Russia on a clear day” foreign policy cred, McCain just created another opening for Dems to go to town on him.
Fife Symington? Were his parents related to Sarah Palin’s grandparents? Maybe they share that set of grandparents?
Scheunemann said McCain’s answer was intentional?1 That’s funny, given how much he loves NATO.
Is she got a Symington in her family tree? And btw, you never heard about Fife?!!
McCain was also overheard to say to the interviewer: “Estoy cansado en conocerle” when he walked in.
I’d heard of FS, but I’d forgotten all about him.
McCain understands only classical Spanish, not that strange dialect the pm is speaking.
Translation please.
Wish I could. Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And he’s a chef now, so that ain’t good!
Oh McCain’s “on top of it” alright. On top of a big pile of shit that is his mind and his career.
When is his senate seat up for grabs? Is it this year? It would be so nice to not only see him NOT into the white house, but also to see him out of his criminal senate career.
It is long past time to put that mean, lying, nasty, dishonorable (and did I say lying) bastard out to pasture.
I would hate to have to work with him in the Senate when he loses – he’s unpleasant enough as it is.
He’s still bitter because of all the Spaniards shooting at him as he charged up San Juan Hill.
“I’m tired of knowing you” in very bad Spanish (as opposed to “encantado de conocerle” which means “pleased to meet you”).
Well, in his defense, in his youth at the turn of the last century, U.S.-Spain relations weren’t so chummy. It’s only been 11 decades, give him a chance to get up to speed.
Some one should ask McCain if he would meet with President al Talibani (the president of Iraq), just to see if McCain thinks he is the Taliban leader.
Oh, and since Palin can “see Russia from her window”, (another lie, she can only see Alaska from her window), they should ask her how many times she has visited Russia since it is so close.
When did Spain become a country we need to elevate to Iran or North Korea status? Did I miss something?
