The staff of wikileaks reports that the internet group "Anonymous" hacked Sarah Palin’s email account and submitted their quarry to wikileaks last night.
The McCain/Palin camp are officially outraged about the break-in, which is a tacit confirmation that this isn’t a hoax. Click here to see the screen shots of Palin’s inbox for the account "gov.sarah@yahoo.com".
The contents of the inbox confirm that Palin was using her private account for government business. We already knew that Palin’s advisers urged her to use private accounts, a la RNC email accounts, in order to circumvent FOIA requests and skirt subpoenas.
Palin used the account to correspond with many members of her administration including her senior aides Ivy Frye and Frank Bailey, communications officer Beth Leschper, appointee Judy Patrick, Anchorage office director Kris Perry, press secretary Roseanne Hughes, Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, and deputy communications director Sharon Leighow, among others.
The subjects of many messages sound work-related. One message between Palin and communications director Meghan Stapleton is entitled "Motor Fuel Tax Suspension. An exchange between Palin and her deputy chief of staff Randall Ruaro has the subject line "Draft letter to Governor Schwarzenegger / Container Tax." Other suspiciously governmental headers include: ‘Using Royalty Oil to Lower the Cost of Fuel for Alaskans,’ ‘Court of Appeals/Executive Director Parole Board/Boards and Commissions,’ ‘DPS Personnel and Budget Issues,’ ‘Another Records Request,’ and ‘FW: CONFIDENTIAL Ethics Matter’.
Government email issues aside, John McCain probably wasn’t thrilled to learn that Palin and Ivy Frye were exchanging email about "Veep Talking Points" through this insecure Yahoo account on August 31.

Clowns.
Of course the main link to wikileaks doesn’t work.
Leave Sarah Palin alone!
Of the evil, scary, psycho, Steven King-esque variety, right?
FunnyD
not any more
damn
i had it up this afternoon but didn’t think it appropriate to dl @ work
(i am a contributor to our policy and it would be hypocritical)
This girl has never seen a rule that applies to her. Good start for a Veep…like the one we’ve got.
Now Ian, why are you insulting the hackers with terms like that.
Oh wait, are you calling Palin and her staff clowns?
Never mind
More the McKrusty the Clown variety.
I always thought she was a yahoo, but this is ridiculous.
I wonder how many blackberry devices she’s tossed in the middle of the night?
There’s actually a post about this at CNN.com on their ticker. It’s been up only two hours and there are over 400 comments. Some are pretty funny. There are even suggestions the Repugs hacked it themselves to get Palin back in the news.
There’s also a good comment pointing out that McCain voted for the Patriot Act and for warrentless wiretapping, so he shouldn’t be concerned about this.
LMAO.
Best thing for Palin to do is release ALL her emails on ALL her email accounts, since it ALL appears to be public business.
I mean, she’s got nothing to hide, right? Right?
Sniff! Screen shots no workie! Sniff, sniff!
I wonder how many blackberry devices she’s tossed in the middle of the night?
Not sure I really wanna think about *any* kind of devices Mrs. Palin uses in the middle of the night….
Any minute now, Joe Lieberman will issue a statement blaming the breach on Lamont hackers.
From the AP:
That would be Ivy Frye of “Stop blogging. Stop blogging right now!” fame.
Here is a pic of Ivy dancing with Piper Palin at the Governor’s Inaugural Ball on 1/20/07. Did Piper help with her hair? Inquiring minds want to know.
It could be liberal bloggers who are responsible and if not them, then I would have to say it’s Bill Clinton’s fault.
I can’t believe that the Hockey Mom and Moose Huntress would illegally use her personal email for government business. You would think she was a Rovian-Republican!
The http://www.wikileaks.org site is actually down right now.
I don’t know whether it is the traffic load, whether they shut themselves down or suspiciously, somebody with
Federalpower shut them down.Um…who are you and what have you done with the jayt who, just weeks ago, her politics notwithstanding, that she was va-voom?
Something like I wouldn’t kick her outta…you know.
Maybe I’m confusing you with some other fella here.
McCain probably orchestrated it with his magic Blackberry. He is quite adept at making things crash, airplanes, the economy, and with any luck, his campaign.
Another thing to remember about this incident along with the content of the emails is a shocking lack of care about information security. How can we trust Sarah Palin with state secrets if she uses outside email on notoriously hackable public services? At least Rove illegally used the RNC servers, for which one assumes (maybe incorrectly, but still…) someone worried about security and enforced strong passwords, etc.
Are you kicking that flu bug yet, demi?
it’s the union’s fault, it’s the media’s fault, it’s activist judges fault as well
Anonymous responds here
Tsk, tsk, tsk. The Republicans never seem to think of it, but I avoid situations like this by being honest.
What a radical thought. Don’t imagine that it will occur to pols of either party anytime soon, as dishonesty has been so handsomely rewarded by power & money.
I have always found that the truth is lots easier to remember. Republicans will never learn that lesson because it would require them to be honest at least once to form a basis for comparison.
What is really weird about this, is that even the cached pages on Google for the Wikileaks Sarah Palin hacked emails are gone.
Just flippin’ gone!
Like this one.
And this one.
For non-techies, let me see if I can explain this.
1. Wikileaks had a webpage or two about the “Hacked Sarah Palin emails” on its own site (Wikileaks) servers.
2. You can’t get to those Wikileaks webpages anymore.
3. You can’t even get to the Wikileaks site itself anymore.
4. Google had its own cached webpages from the “Wikileaks Hacked Sarah Palin emails webpages”, located on its own (Google) servers, and you can’t get to those anymore.
Does the word “Conspiracy” ring a bell?
One might logically assume that someone with
Federalpower intervened at both Wikileaks and Google, and said “shut it down!”.One might even go further and assume that someone with
Federalpower said “if you don’t do what we say, we’ll arrest you!”Note: Earlier in the day, I downloaded the Wikileaks Zip file of the “Hacked Sarah Palin emails”.
After looking at the stuff, I ended up deleting the Zip file and its contents since they were no more than what had been displayed at Wikileaks. I guess I should have kept them for ya’ll. *g*
Additional Note: Wikileaks, at the time the “Hacked Sarah Palin emails” webpage was up, had a “curious” little sentence that said, in effect, “we’re looking through the rest of the emails and should “interesting other stuff” be observed, we’ll post it.”
I’d guess now that ain’t gonna happen. *g*
Leave Sarah Palin Alone!
The sobbing is the best.
Politics have deteriorated to the point that it doesn’t matter whether your story is consistent from one day to the next, or whether you tell the truth or lie. Pols have discovered that voters have no context and no memory, so pols can say anything they want today that fits today’s news cycle and say the opposite tomorrow if that suits. All with no negative consequences.
Looks like they have some s’plaining to do. I wonder if they will. Inquiring minds want to know.
Better today, thanks. Not close to 100%, but I did get a bit of an appetite today. I added pasta to the soup.
Interesting letter from an Alaska State Rep up at TPM Muckraker about Troopergate and the guv-appointed atty general. Has a powerful comment to the media about what their job is [hint: not repeating the spin….]
ZING!
http://www.americablog.com has a new video where McCain was asked a question about China drilling off of Cuba (I assume that was the question) but you should watch the video yourself to decide. McCain spends some time talking about fishes.
Good column by David Neiwert a little while ago. Somebody threatens to kill Obama and the US Attorney doesn’t give a shit and it gets virtually no play. palin has her e-mail hacked and we’re gonna hear about it for days. People will be debating “Was that ‘government business’?” Comes at a great time for McCain after he’s just stepped in shit on this economic mess. This is exactly was Palin was chosen– a distraction.
We used to be able to rely on the MSM to point out inconsistencies in the narrative. You know, back when media types were actually journalists, as opposed to the contemporary breed, promoted for no other reason than having a certain look and being able to read a teleprompter.
You’d think that a guy who invented the BlackBerry would be able to keep his dim VP pick from having her email hacked. Wouldn’t he do that during her acceptance speech?
Can someone here tell me where everyone is?
Brain’s not working well, but I’ve been kinda lost for the last coupla hours.
1. Using *any* unencrypted transmission for confidential information is just.plain.stoopid
2. Breaking into Yahoo mail is illegal.
3. Publishing other peoples confidential information (no matter how stoopid and careless they are) is of questionable legality.
4. wikileaks has been up and down all afternoon , likely because of traffic (or else it wouldn’t keep coming back).
That’s just priceless.
Hackers love a challenge. They’ll find an alternative venue.
You didn’t see ABC News this evening. They showed numerous clips of McCain talking about being in favor of de-regulation and then finally flipping his position yesterday. It was amusing, especially since it was pretty much followed by a McCain ad saying he would fight for stronger oversight.
Yay for pasta!
Hi demi! Here but lurking…trying to read, while putting my grandkid to bed.
{{{demi}}}
The hackers would have nothing to motivate them if McPalin ever told the truth.
Is that right? Not questioning you, just didn’t realize that Congress had gotten around to passing such legislation. Do you have a link?
That must have been the longest 2 minutes of my life.
The standard take: using off-the-books email for official business is dubious, using commodity webmail for it is dumb. Not even the GOP.com peeps did that.
With my tin-foil on: what better way to create a pretext for destroying evidence by ‘hacking’ the off-the-books email account, posting screenshots to /b/ on 4chan that don’t really say much, then getting people to log in so that it’s blocked, and can then be deleted.
I mean, we know about the classic Rovian ratfuck M.O.
They have been doing a better job of late. Serves McCain right for biting the hand(s) that fluffed him.
I don’t expect this new and improved MSM scrutiny to last, unfortunately.
” When a man assumes a public trust, he should consider himself as public property.”
Life of Jefferson (Rayner), p. 356.
I think it would apply equally to a woman…wouldn’t want to be sexist, after all!
Hey. You could try reading this stuff to her/him.
Out like a light.
(Give ‘em a kiss on the top of the head from me.)
Dugg it!
There is certainly no precedent for that last part.
That’s one of those old ideas that Republics want to eliminate.
I do. I expect them all to wake up on Jan 20th and act like they have something to prove.
IANAL
DCMA comes to mind as having been sued to cover exploiting software flaws to gain unauthorized access to someone else’s computer. There are other statutes as well.
OTOH the hint from the DailyDave was that her password(s) were compromised.
The legality in that instance would be less clear.
If you are stupid enough to give someone your password they could perhaps argue some de-facto license to use it.
I could buy that, but those Google cached pages of “Wikileaks Hacked Sarah Palin emails webpages” are gone too!
“Palin staff won’t comply with subpoenas”
Um.. whatever, sarah. Even your twin, Monica Goodling, complied with her subpeona.
Thanks. I take your response as indicating that the illegality of hacking in this particular incident is a jump ball.
It’s really a lot of work to eliminate all Google traces and hack all the voting machines. Republics are enterprising if nothing else.
Palin is the New Decider.
But Sarah apparently has “legal eagle” McLying advising her. God, that sounds scary.
Wilki leaks server IP 88.80.13.160 (Sweden) doesn’t respond to any type of connection attempts and will not respond to ICMP ping requests. Either it is completely down OR we are being blocked by the eeennn ssaa aaa!!
Ok, if folks here really want to see those “Hacked Sarah Palin Emails”, you can go to Gawker.com site and see them here.
On Anderson: Palin telling us we will have to decide who we can trust? She shouldn’t want to ask that.
Speaking of Stephen King, apparently the nomination of Palin has brought out an onslaught of new contributors to the Obama campaign. Authors of all manners and sorts have started efforts to donate autographed first-edition works and other materials to fundraisers for Obama all across the country! Including Stephen King!
Palin ciould turn out to be McCain’s worst “nightmare”.
Authors Contribute First Editions To Obama Campaign
God, do I miss Judge Sirica at times like this.
In my experience *anyone* getting Google to act on their cache in a timely manner would qualify as a miracle.
wikileaks had a revised page with screenshots but no zip file up to about an hour ago.
reposting the dailydave comment that clued me in the first place
And the Wingnuts at Townhall.com (and elsewhere) are blaming this hack of course, on the leftwing DFHs:
Leftwing Hackers Unlawfully Break Into Governor Palin’s Email
I don’t disagree with this, but nevertheless, those Google cache pages are gone. Stuff like that makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck.
I’m dying to know what, if anything, that one address that has a bunch of numbers and ends with “@mms.dobson” is all about.
Alaska Attorney General Talis Colberg is unvailable for the next two weeks. He’s gone on vacation.
In Kansas………
Teddy upstairs.
Who the hell vacations in Kansas?
Here are some screenshots that were published.
HackedPalin photos
The hackers supposedly sent the more complete files around to government investigators and several media sources, but didn’t post them all.
The screenshots were sort of a “shot across the bow” it seems. Enough to scare the bejeezus out of the McCain-Palin camp – as they don’t know how much the hackers got. Thus the hackers can play “cat-and-mouse”, slowly twiusting Palin in the wind with each new revelation.
Just how long will McCain hold onto Palin as these revelations are slowly leaked?
AG’s trying to hide….?
Probably an unnecessary question….but by what authority are they saying Left-wing hackers did the job. I am assuming it is not known who did the hacking; maybe Repub opponents, satan, etc. Is there any basis for the left-wing assertion? Facts anyone?
rather than left-wing or right-wing hackers they should just be called heroes. what i am wondering is where were these hackers back when gwb and alberto were firing us attorneys for political reasons and corresponding about (illegally,) on public, non-gov email accounts?
I think there’s a retraction in order, given that Wormtongue Carpenter got the story completely wrong.
Looking at /b/, there was one random /b/tard who used public data and guesswork to answer the ’secret questions’ and change the password to Palin’s account, and who then panicked and posted the details up on /b/.
No ‘left-wing’ operatives involved whatso-frigging-ever.
If these were left wing operatives, I’m hurt and offended that I wasn’t cc’d. After all I’ve done for the vast left wing conspiracy, I had to read this stuff on wikileaks like everyone else.
