As governor of Alaska, John McCain’s running mate Sarah Palin faced a dilemma. She wanted a federally-funded bridge to her home town of Wasilla, but the project threatened a population of endangered belugas in Cook Inlet. So, Palin fought to keep this genetically distinct and geographically isolated population of belugas unprotected by the Endangered Species Act, publicly urging federal officials not to protect the whales.
Palin had to get tough because the 375 marine mammals were standing (swimming?) in the way of progress. Her home town was slated to get a $600 million bridge, a gift from Alaska’s only congressman, Don Young.
In 2005, as chair of the House Transportation Committee, Don Young approved more than $450 million in earmarks for two bridges in Alaska. One of them was the Bridge to Nowhere, the other was the Bridge to Wasilla. At the time, John McCain denounced Young’s bridge earmarks in the strongest possible terms:
At the time, Palin’s running mate for the Republican ticket, Arizona Sen. John McCain, derided both projects as wasteful. He called Young’s highway bill a "monstrosity" that was "terrifying in its fiscal consequences."
"I want no part of this," McCain said in a July 2005 statement. "This legislation is not — I emphasize not — my way of legislating." [AP]
Palin legislates Don Young’s way. As you might expect, Wasilla’s town lobbyist Steven Silver was an architect of the two-bridge earmark deal.
As governor, Palin vocally supported the Bridge to Nowhere and the second bridge dubbed "Don Young’s Way" in honor of its generous Republican benefactor currently under federal investigation. Palin later denounced the BTN, but only after congress had announced it wouldn’t pay for it.
Palin remains an unflagging supporter of Don Young’s Way, however.

Palin: Cheney’s vindictiveness, without the intelligence or experience. Frightening. Have we descended to this?
What a [Edited by moderator]!!
Egreg…experience, intelligence or anything else that supposedly Dick has has not stopped him from being the most destructive operative in probably the history of the country.
What’s the difference between Beluga whales and Sarah Palin?
The whales are intelligent beings, and Palin is a self-proclaimed human that believes she is a dog that wears lipstick.
If they win, the world is dooooomed.
That was not intended as a sexist remark…a gender-neutral term would be ASSHOLE…
disagree with her politics, positions etc but as a woman I take a huge offense to any woman being called that (even by another woman)
lol oh ok gotcha
Good thing she wouldn’t be the VP for a sick old man. Rash plus incompetent? That is a recipe for war.
yup….i love those little creatures
sent you this downstairs
Andrew 100+ miles square total destruction

The Point McKenzie area north of Knik arm is ripe for development if there were transportation infrastructure available. So from an Alaska developers viewpoint a bridge makes sense. Look at the map
It’s about 2 miles from Downtown ANC to Pt MacKenzie. Wasilla is kind of a wash – assuming highway construction from Pt MacKenzie to the parks highway is done, you’re still talking about the same travel distance from ANC to Wasilla, but having an alternate route could decrease congestion. I’ve been stuck in traffic near Elmendorf, not as bad as the 101 on the peninsula, but it does get congested at times. A ferry from near the Alaska RR terminal on the North side of Anchorage might make more sense… I’m not sure about environmental impact of bridges on beluga whales.
Thanx. Looks like Galveston and Bolivar…miles and miles and miles of it.
recipe for the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse
(pats fingers on their little backs for having consistently fought off the urge to type that word which starts with “b” and rhymes with “witch”.)
The McPalin campaign is a political Bridge To Nowhere.
After all she called her self a dog, and she is a female….I am too, so I’m not being sexist…
lol just hate that word. it is used in so many songs and has come to become synonymous with female
MCNBC: John McCain says he wants to “curb excessive executive pay.”
Does that include the pay that Mrs. McCain gets from the beer company?
so sorry took S.Fl…(Homestead) 10years to build back
The correct term for a female dog is “bitch”, so it’s really not offensive…just watch the Westminster Dog Show…they mention bitch every 2 seconds…*G* Palin is the one that basically said that she is a bitch…a female pitbull dog with lipstick…she meant it in a jesting way I’m sure…to sound tough.
lol umm probably not. Give him time to flip on this issue again
Looking at the map a bit more I’d expect a bypass from NE Anchorage to the Rabbit Run area is also on the long term horizon – the Costco and Sam’s club are on the south side of Anchorage and diverting traffic around the city would but down on travel time (and fuel consumption).
The imagery is very suggestive of crops being grown in the Pt Mackenzie area… again a ferry might make more sense, but it seems pretty obvious that some development in the area is going to occur, just because of the geography. Anchorage population has been growing a lot – the land on the north of Knik Arm is a developers dream.
It means that his female VP will not get equal pay for equal work, since he doesn’t believe in that. I knew that would come sooner or later….Gawd, the man is a moron.
LS- left something downstairs, specifically with you in mind. Maybe you already have the links in Ken’s article, but still…
Oh I get the dog reference but it is a popular term used in music that has nothing to do with a dog. It has so permeated my generation that men will refer to any female as a bitch as in ..yeah peep that bitch over there..etc.
i.e., she won’t make as much as Cheney.
Is Carly going to return her golden parachute?
used interchangeably with the term ‘ho’ as well.
I’ll go look.
Olbermann says Palin’s favorable/unfavorable rating has dropped 10 points – since Saturday.
heh.
Jeebus
Cindy Lou McSame does look like a TROLLOP in that lavender satin LOW cut camisol
Is Carly going to return her golden parachute?
Of course !!
(umm, there are pigs flyin’ outta my ass, and I don’t like it).
Spread the word:
Digg this post
spew alert please LOL
not surprising is it? she’s not up to the job – and she was chosen at the last minute. Rash and reckless, my friends, rash and reckless.
And it’s hard to ignore the obvious.
Thank you. I see that they link to BurntOrange too. I watched the reporters in Houston flip out on the air yesterday regarding the difficulty in covering the storm. They were really pissed off.
Yeah, if even people in my extended family — including Republicans — are noticing that she is Not Qualified — there is hope.
Are they wearing lipstick?
Maybe Mrs. Palin will turn out to be a new kind of “anchor baby”.
I think Carly threw a golden bomb at McSame for picking the other woman…Tweety says she’ll be gone by midnight…Heh. McSame is such a “ladies” man, isn’t he.
My sincerest apologies if this was already linked.
I, like many others, am terribly distracted today.
But, just in case anyone missed this:

Are they wearing lipstick?
dunno – scared to look.
I thought pigs were cuddly. They feel pretty damn bristly, actually.

Awwww….cute!
Palin revels in her ignorance and wraps it in cocksure swagger. Remind you of anyone?
Surprised they haven’t put her in a flight suit yet
I think Palin already did! Cindy will be mad…only she likes Heidi wear.
She’s just like him.
it’s only a matter of time.
Made me so curious….
Somewhere today on my surfing I saw an article that said that Palin’s glow is fading….don’t ask me, I don’t remember…but it was AP or Reuters or something like that…
Please, who is Carly? I feel so uninformed.
she is Mr.Eds sister
???
Surprised they haven’t put her in a flight suit yet
When they do, I’m bettin’ ‘the bulge’ will still be there…
Odd that there’s a lot of shiny object bashing, not much discussion of the geographic issues. Looks like the growth has been decelerating, but still it is estimated at nearly 8% population growth currently. Undeveloped land on the north side of Knik Arm has to attract some interest from developers, but it is too distant if one would have to take the Glenn highway to the Parks highway to get to it.
There are docks just north of down town. Ferries might be problematic due to winter ice though. I don’t recall Knik arm freezing when I’ve been in Anchorage in December and February, but that doesn’t mean it stays ice free. Seward is known for being an ice free port, I’ve not heard that Anchorage is (My son went to High School in Seward).
‘ere ya go:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carly_fiorina
Carly Fiorina…she was the head of Hewlett-Packard and caused the company to basically implode…she has been McCain’s top advisor and appearing all over the tv…now, she made a comment today that said that even McCain couldn’t qualify to run HP…caused a big ruffle…i.e., even McCain is not as qualified as she is/was…even though she was a complete failure…as the campaign turns…
too bad national media doesn’t get outraged like that

I think I am beginning to understand
You know it has to be on the schedule…fly her into, say, Bagram Air Base on a “meet the troops” trip in the #2 seat of a trainer…have her climb out of the plane, take off her helmet, and toss the hair, like some kind of Top Gun fantasy. Pause…then big smile and wave, to the roar of the delirious crowd…
I’ll bet it’s already filmed. Or something similar.
Though I don’t believe in killing things, I am not overly fond of cockroaches and rats. But anyone who can kill Belugas is a true monster. They smile.
sorry could NOT resist the snark

I’d rather have a Beluga whale or Polar bear as VP…really.
dont ask me,i love the critters more than the humans…rescued a Coon hound yesterday
Coonhounds are one of the sweetest breeds ever…awww…
Why do bridges endanger whales?
Seriously. I don’t understand why whales are harmed by a bridge. Why do we support people wasting fuel to get produce to market? There appear to be quite a few acres under cultivation near Pt MacKenzie, currently they have to travel upwards of 80 miles to get to their natural marketplace in Anchorage. A bridge would cut that to under 10 miles.
Is anyone paying attention to facts here? Snark directed at McCain’s shiny object is all well and good, but there are some things to actually think about on the Knik Arm bridge, and it appears to makes some sense given the geographic and demographics of the area. yet all I see is snark about Shiny object… hello?
she was Murphy ,she kept wanting to sit onthe accelerator pedal”g”

Whodunnit Solved
The Republican Jewish Coalition is taking responsibility for those calls to Jewish voters that asked offensive questions about Barack Obama.
Ben Smith reports:
The Republican Jewish Coalition, which is launching a campaign against Obama on behalf of Senator John McCain, sponsored the poll to “understand why Barack Obama continues to have a problem among Jewish voters,” the group’s executive director, Matt Brooks, told Politico. …
“What we did is test, in standard polling methodology, a number of factual issues that have been reported on in the press and are policy positions to see how they’re resonating in the Jewish community,” said Brooks. “The notion that this is a ‘push poll’ is offensive to us.”
Brooks said the RJC, whose board includes advisors and fundraisers for Senator John McCain, had placed 750 calls to Jewish voters in five states: Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
Governor Palin endangers whales, and polar bears, and wolves….because she gets money for her state via earmarks for projects that are unnecessary that ultimately is used to support oil companies and create revenue for her state. It doesn’t have to be that way.
I noticed, watching last night’s The Daily Show that his audience was amazed by the ‘paying for the rape kit’ story.
Evidently, this is still a very little-known story. Wait till that one goes mainstream….
buh-bye?
im with you
I see McCain as Wile E. Coyote, and Palin as ACME powered rollerskates. He’s getting the blastoff, but I think there’s a rock wall in his near future…
Hey Twain- you just gave me the opening I needed. Cockroaches.
Too bad I don’t have a political blog where I can post pictures. Not quite sure what I’d say about this photo (taken 10 minutes ago) but I’m working on it.
Not for the squeamish!

LS here is the link to Palin’s falling favorability
ITs ugly
I wonder if Sarah also advocates shooting the Beluga Whales from airplanes? I mean she does for wolves and Bears. Just think with only a few hundred shots the whale problem would disappear and she could get her $600 million bridge for 7,000 people. Gee do you think the families of the victims of that bridge that collapsed could have used that $$$ to really have fixed it before it collapsed???
Rachel has the cutest smile
wth? were the ants attacking or?
GOOOOOOOOOD!

Ants – 2
Cockroach – 0
RACHEL sez
THEY ARE SO COMFORTABLE LYING,and then said what i said 3 days ago
Sarah loves THE LYING…she ENJOYS lying
Let’s see. $600 million divided by 4000 residents of Wasilla equals $150,000 per person. Wow, what a great deal! Can I have $150,000 for something. Especially something that is a total boondoggle.
wobbs- eating up the remains! Dead cockroach.
oh. circle of life but still nasty
Don’t you think that money would be better spent to prevent the bridges that are used by way more people than there are in Alaska to make sure they won’t collapse costing lives. I say let those few farmers pay for their own transportation rather than take money away from keeping more important infrastructure in good repair??? As it is the population per capita get over $1000 for infrastructure while the next largest recipients get around $28.00 ??
i loves me some Keith, and Lauren Bacall just said she only listens to him
nice
Twain- I don’t know if you have these in NoCal- in SoCal we used to call them “water bugs”- this is a Southern one- disgusting but not really a great health hazard. I think it ate a boric acid tablet… The ants are cleaning up the mess.
ants are underrated insects!
Look I’m with you on palin being bad for bears and wolves. I’m just not clear on how a bridge endangers whales, and as someone with friends and family in Alaska this particular bridge could make their lives easier, could reduce carbon emissions by cutting an 80 mile trip to a 10 mile trip. The bridge wouldn’t be of primary benefit to Wasilla as implied in the post, it would beefit Anchorage and developers of land in the Point MacKenzie area and also relieve some population pressure in Anchorage/Eagle River. I contend that this is a somewhat sensible development project. Look at the satelite imagery and tell me that Point MacKenzie produce traveling 80 miles is good from a Carbon emissions standpoint. Put yourself in the position of an Alaskan farmer near Point MacKenzie.
A 2 mile bridge across mostly mudflats just doesn’t seem to me to be a problem for whales. We’re stating that it harms whales without doing an EIS. This smacks of magical thinking to me. Sometimes it does make sense to build new infrastructure.
As for funding, I agree that Alaskans should fund this out of state revenue streams, they truly have been getting too big a share of Federal transportation dollars for a long time.
Palin’s favorables may be falling, but she did get a nice boost from the Indoor Tanning Association today. *g*
Wasilla doesn’t benefit from the bridge. Has anybody besides me looked at the geography?
I don’t underrate them at all. The suckers are voracious and are horrible soil turners. They serve a purpose and I respect it but living in california (the giant ant hill) they can be lil pest
But why is Sarah fighting Tooth and Nail to not allow the Whales to be listed on the endangered list even though they are genetically different from all other Beluga Whales?? Something is fishey here. And she is going to clean up Washington?? WAFL
I agree that Alaska should be doing infrastructure work using State revenue streams. I also question the cost estimates. This is a short distance across what is mostly mudflats, granted there are sub arctic climate considerations, but still it seems like a causeway and short bridge would cost out a lot less that the quoted price tag.
Girlfriend! Coonhound, as in Plothound?
Got me one about a year and a half ago. From the pound. Brindle dog. Very high maintenance, but love him to pieces.
I just went and hugged him and kissed him and told him you have one too.
Brindle says Arrrroooooh.
wobbs- oh how well I know! Having lived in CA (insect heaven, so to speak) they can destroy just about anything when they put their “minds” to it. I was struggling for some kind of political analogy, but I still haven’t come up with it yet!
eli at the mothership
I agree with you. What I have a problem with is when they say they are getting money for something that they have no intention of spending it on…hence the bridge for nowhere…and the money actually goes for something totally different, because they don’t really care about the bridges you really need. What they really care about is building and supporting the oil industry and that gives enormous profits to people that don’t even live in AK. That is the real problem. They do this at all costs, including not protecting species that should be protected. It is like a microcosm of what is happening to the entire nation. I hope you get what I’m saying. Of course, we are irreverently snarky, but that just goes with the absurdity of the entire situation. I hope the right bridges get funded and make life easier for Alaskans. It is the BS that I object to, as well as the ignorance about the danger to the ecosystem. Peace.
I got it. Russian caviar. Is there a blackmarket?
That is exactly what I’m talking about too. The $figures are so inflated. Clearly, Alaskans need infrastructure, but the cost analysis should be sane.
Hey, I am with you. I would rather take my share of a bridge to nowhere in cash. Then I could retire. Probably the 200 people of the Original Bridge to Nowhere in KathchyKan would rather take the million dollars per person that it costs. Alaska rocks. They get more Federal money, than most states. Plus, they get that $3200 per year from Exxon. Sweet.
Is someone in Alaska harvesting caviar from the Belugas.
Other than russians…sort of like dropping a moose?
Lateral association, here wmd, so pardon this, but the AK blogger Mudflats is now a must read. She tells part of the story, here.

~~I’ve been overwhelmed with the response to the blog. The result of the last two and a half weeks has been two and a half million hits, more than 25,000 comments, so much email I can hardly read it, and best of all, a community of intelligent, committed, thoughtful individuals who knock my socks off every day.~~
And, she has a new post up:

STORM WARNING! The legal paperwork blizzard has arrived. Today we are expecting accumulations of 10-12″ of legal stall tactics, creating hazardous conditions for those trying to navigate through the Palin scandal we have come to know as “Troopergate”. So, before proceeding, make sure you’ve got your studded tires on, and a good shovel. Ready?~~~

You know I looked back and the “tooth and nail” opposition to protecting whales isn’t sourced. Where did this idea come from?
yes it does fit a picture from her documented support of aerial hunting. But there isn’t a source for this listed.
Look I don’t support McCain/Palin. I’ve been making calls for Obama a good bit of today (3 more contacts today out of 20+ calls). But I also think we should be careful and think about the stories we tell, and this one doesn’t seem to have legs. being opposed to Sarah Palin as VP doesn’t mean we should tell stories about something basically good she’s doing for the people of Alaska after all she was elected Governor to do exactly that. And when you look at Knik Arm this appears to be sensible, and actually potentially carbon reducing.
Look at the map.
zoom in/out a bit… this bridge isn’t a bridge to nowhere, it actually makes sense for the people of Alaska. That’s not to say it should be subsidized by the rest of the US via our fuel taxes.
i just rescued her from the highway and returned her to her family…she was LOVERLY!
I do get what you are saying.
All I’m saying is that we should avoid knee-jerking “development is bad MM’kay” without doing some research and thinking. Some is bad. There are a lot of problems in Washington. Automagical thinking responses don’t elevate discourse and don’t solve the problems, rather they can cause people to get a somewhat valid opinion of closed mindedness. There seems to be an association that Alaska asks for money to build bridge, must be bridge to nowhere.
This doesn’t look to be true with the Knik arm. And the Beluga whale stuff should be sourced – without a source it could be bait to make liberals look closed minded, much like the fake list of banned books. We have to be above this, and that’s why I’m actively posting on this thread.
I looked, didn’t see anything regarding the Knik Arm bridge in your links.
wmd1961, I trust your question is well-intended and sincere.
Here’s info that helps to answer the question.
The 350 Cook Island belguga whales are all that remain of a population that has crashed by almost 75% in the last twenty years..
Anchorage Daily News reported:
Even Fox News got the concept:
Bridges in aquatic habitiat have numerous adverse consequnces: here are three.
1) During construction, both acoustic pollution and also dispersal of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants which would otherwise remain sequestered in aquatic sediments.
2) Acoustic / vibrational (same thing, really) pollution from vehicle operation
3) Persistent organic pollutants / volatile hydrocarbons / heavy metals constantly released by normal vehicular traffic (and huge increases in point-source pollution when inevitable accidents occur).
Yet another adverse consequence for the Cook Inlet beluga whales would come from the very increased development (and hence increased human activity) of currently less-developed (or non-developed) lands within the watershed draining into the Cook Inlet the bridge would ensure.
The Cook Inlet beluga whales have been living in what we Americans now call Alaska since before recorded history. The recent history of European occupation and exploitation of Alaska is one of one corrupt insider deal after another. Yet the Cook Island beluga whales aren’t the property of the chamber of commerce crowd, Anchorage’s developers, or even the people of Alaska.
The whales are a national responsiblity, held in trust for the entire planet’s posterity: for a future extending millenia beyond the latest short-term development boomlet.
Wiping out any species — let alone a species of intelligent creatures like cetaceans — so human developers can go exploit more land is an obscene prospect.
As far as Don Young’s Way is concerned, the developers can go build in hell.
From Wikipedia
Thanks for a thoughtful and sourced response. One caveat – Defenders of Wildlife doesn’t source Palin’s opposition to including the Cook Inlet belugas on the Endangered Species list. But this pretty much nails it as it’s from the state website.
I can attest to seeing fewer whales when driving from Anchorage to Seward in 2000 than I did in 1995, but that anecdotal evidence is pretty useless.
As I’ve been thinking and writing about Knik arm geography it occurred to me that when farm produce from Point MacKenzie needs to get to Anchorage it can travel by sea – the growing season is shorter than the ice bound season, and I’m with you that the people that live near Point MacKenzie can drive the extra 70 miles in the winter.
wmd1961, thanks for the sourcing linky re Palin’s opposition! i’ll put it to good use. glad my (server hamster-straining) comment was useful.
It seems like the bridge is likely a minor issue compared to the natural gas platforms in the Cook Inlet.
I’m still thinking about the geography. Knik arm is a tidal mudflat and it seems unlikely to be a significant part of the Cook Inlet whales range… Then again I’ve personally seen whales in Turnagain Arm, and it is much the same type of habitat, although it has greater tidal variation.
No problem.
Thanks for your long post. I’m not completely convinced that a Knik Arm bridge is a bad idea – an EIS hasn’t been done as far as I know… I certainly don’t want to see Cook Inlet Belugas decline in population, but I also can look at the geography and demographics. Maybe if Alaska didn’t have those long winter nights the population increase wouldn’t make development attractive. All snark aside Anchorage has grown significantly since my son’s mother moved to Seward in 1988, and I’ve noticed a lot of growth since I started visiting after he joined her there in 1994.
I posted a source for Palin’s opposition to placing the whales on the Endangered species list @ 127.
Dang thats better than Wikipedia source I used…You on the peninsular here in the bay area??
Ben Lomond, CA and Bloomington, IN.
close enough.. see ya at the next Norcal meetup??
