Apparently the McCain campaign is behind the story that he can’t use the internet due to injuries he suffered as a POW. This, from Jake Tapper:
Assuredly McCain isn’t comfortable talking about this — and the McCain campaign discouraged me from writing about this — but the reason the aged Arizonan doesn’t use a computer or send e-mail is because of his war wounds.
I realize some of the nastier liberals in the blogosphere will see this as McCain once again "playing the POW card," but it’s simply a fact: typing on a regular keyboard for any sustained period of time bothers McCain physically.
He can type, he occasionally does type, but in general, the injuries he sustained as a POW — ones that make it impossible for him to raise his arms high enough to comb his hair — mean that small tasks make his shoulders ache, so he tries to avoid any repetitive exercise.
Again, it’s not that he can’t type, he just by habit, avoids when he can, repetitive exercise involving his arms. He does if he has to, as with handshaking or autographs.
It’s certainly possible that the Obama campaign did not know this, since McCain makes it sound in interviews as if this is a matter of choice, not discomfort because of his war wounds.
"I read my e-mails, but I don’t write any," McCain told Fortune magazine in 2006. "I’m a Neanderthal — I don’t even type. I do have rudimentary capabilities to call up some Web sites, like the New York Times online, that sort of stuff. No laptop. No PalmPilot. I prefer my schedule on notecards, which I keep in my jacket pocket."
Or, as Ben Smith points out in Politico, it’s possible that the Obama campaign doesn’t "know" this for the same reason that the McCain campaign has been reduced to pushing the story on background – because McCain himself says he’s learning to go online, and he already uses campaign chief Mark Salter’s blackberry. Knowing that Jake Tapper sees factchecking as an abusive liberal practice explains a fair amount, don’t you think?
So anyway, it sounds as if his campaign’s story about the extent of Senator McCain’s disability is evolving, and there is some indication that’s the case.
For instance: Andrew Malcolm, the political editor of the LA Times and, as Laura Bush’s ‘00 campaign secretary a former coworker of the Bush veterans on McCain’s campaign staff, wrote a rather fierce blog post on the subject entitled "Oops, Obama ad mocks McCain’s inability to send e-mail. Trouble is, he can’t due to tortured fingers." Unfortunately, as tends to happen* when Mr. Malcolm’s partisan tendencies get away with his judgment, the Times has been forced to amend the post to acknowledge that the candidate himself said otherwise.
That isn’t the only way the LA Times has evolved on McCain’s health. During the primaries, they published an article about McCain’s health which was linked to by WebMD and CBS. According to a reprint in a Florida publication, that article was entitled "John McCain: Physically fit to serve as 44th president?— A host of health issues from skin cancer to torture as a POW could be a liability for the active 70-year-old Arizona Republican senator"
I would link to the article itself, but something funny happened. If you click on any of those outside links – including the single page link on the Florida site and the google cache for the article – the URL has been redirected to a story on the LA Times site about McCain warning NRA members that Hillary and Obama want to take their guns away.
The actual article, with a substantially less inflammatory title – "McCain faces question of fitness to serve, physically. Age and health issues could be campaign liabilities for the GOP presidential candidate" has been moved to here. It discusses the Senator’s physical challenges in some detail. It does not mention either repetitive motion or his hands.**
The Washington Post, on the other hand, does specifically mention Senator McCain’s hands and repetitive motion
Dressed in jeans, an L.L. Bean baseball cap, sunglasses and a white sweat shirt with a cheesy picture of his family on the front, McCain held court as he does almost daily aboard the Straight Talk Express.
Except this time, it was about meat.
Ribs, to be specific. He gets ‘em at Costco — the big slabs of pork ribs. And he slaps them on the grill at the lowest possible temperature. Any hotter, he says, and the meat cooks too fast.
His secret recipe is a dry-rub concoction that consists of one-third salt, one-third pepper and one-third garlic powder — and he pours it on. But the real trick, he says, is the fresh lemon juice that he squeezes onto the ribs repeatedly. Keeps ‘em juicy.
As I see it, there are two possibilities here: either the stories about McCain’s hands being severely disabled are true, or the stories about McCain’s being a fervent barbecue hobbyist who personally squeezes lemons for hours on end are true.
That it might be possible for me to avoid being one of the nasty liberals, I’m rather hoping Mr. Tapper and Mr. Malcolm will clear up for me which of Senator McCain’s stories I’m to currently believe. I feel I can count on them. Do keep me posted.
*the post in question is back online since rightblogger Patterico (a fellow Bush ally) made an issue of its deletion, and has been edited several times to remove evidence of Mr. Malcolm’s, er, enthusiasm.
** I have, under the circumstances, made a pdf of the article in its current state

Stephen Hawkings uses a computer.
Case closed.
Awwww, he’s not just a POW. He’s the only POW. He’s special.
Cindy McCain says he has no problem hoggin’ the remote. He can push buttons..and sign things..so that is just BS…he’s just too disconnected to bother…Cindy said he watches ESPN every minute of the day…What the hell did she mean by that?? Sort of a dig I’d say.
Paraplegics, quadriplegics, amputees, stroke victims, you name the disability…. they use computers…. Blind can use special computers…. the sound guy for one of our local progressive radio show is blind.
This is about the most stupid thing I ever heard…… My father taught himself to use a computer at 75yrs old so that he can file the zoning applications for his Habitat houses….. My Dad is considered 100% VA disabled….
Yea but. Dontchyaknow McBush invented the
internetBlackBerryhttp://www.politico.com/blogs/…..Berry.html
Yep, voice recognition software. I would venture to propose both that he could afford to buy it himself or the government certainly would provide it for him to carry out his duties in the Senate.
how can he use that blackberry that he invented? parapaligics and blind people use e-mail. I heard this and thought it was the biggest bullshit I’ve hdard from tehm.. it was at the time. but now he’s clarified his “fundamentally stromng” remarks.
So the question can be proposed like this: Does America want a President who isn’t comfortable using the only device which currently gives us any sort of advantage over competing countries in terms of technological savvy per capita (and we’d probably loose that equation to most of Scandinavia)?
Considering the current economic climate, what do we offer the world other than a population of people who work well with various operating systems.
Oh, yeah, we do make good bombs, too.
“I prefer my schedule on notecards, which I keep in my jacket pocket.”
My old boss was the same way. Old timey stuff. Works pretty well actually.
beat me to it while i was typing. i’m a slow typer. old basketball
injury ya know.
My Question:
In the 21st Century…. in the year 2008…. Does America WANT to have a president who cannot use a computer…. who has no idea how to use it, what the internet is and the technology used in today’s world and in the next 8 years…..
Stephen Hawking doesn’t obfuscate his health history.
ding, ding, ding..we have a winner
Bottom line:
He doesn’t do any of the boring stuff himself (Too much effort and all) because he has other people do it for him…but when he’s BBQing, it one of his personal pleasures, so he does his personal pleasures all by himself.
Heh ;>
I guess they did in 2004.
Sounds like we have a whiner too
I thought Obama’s ad was not a good idea when I first saw it. An amazing amount of senior citizens and persons with disability do have problems using computers due to visual impairment, upper mobility impairment etc. Still 70s is not that old. When I think of generations that have problems with computers its not the baby boomers. Disability equipemnt is expensive as hell, so Stephen Hawkings is not a good example. And yeah I have an extended family member with macular degeneration who insists on using the computer unaided and succeeds; it just takes two hours to find directions on yahoo, with excessive grumpiness on all sides.
I still think McCain probably squeezes lemons, but it would have been better for the Obama camp to handle McCain’s “unchangeiness” in a more policy-oriented way.
Sniff Sniff,
I smell Bullshit.
Comments number one and four put this feeble lie to rest nicely, not to mention the fact that even I type with two fingers and basically learned how to use a computer the hard way, while McStain has millions of dollars and literally hundreds of people who could teach him.
Next subject.
Situational disability. Kinda like their ethics.
And here’s my two cents: I had carpel tunnel in both hands (I did have a repair done on my right hand)and had it so bad that I dropped pots off the stove, could not hold a pencil to write, could not type well, could only drive with one hand, had no grip to shake hands with, and dropped my son when I tried to pick him up(he has since forgiven me). Has anyone seen video of McCain campaigning? Does he shake hands? If he’s able to shake hands, then he’s able to type and use a keyboard. I think a greater issue is that he is probably like the majority of the elderly who do NOT use the computer or the internet(I’ve linked several times to the Pew studies on who uses the media and seniors and the internet) – he’s of a generation of people who trust radio, trust tv and movies. Many elderly people see the internet as dangerous and intrusive, not a useful tool. I think McCain is one of them; I think this whole “he can’t use a keyboard because he was tortured” is a bunch of hooey. I think he just is not interested and doesn’t want to – he doesn’t see it as being useful to him. And he’s probably right – when you have as much access to money, and influence as he does, he doesn’t NEED the internet to gather info, etc. But the POW thing is a red herring.
I find the reference to “squeezes lemons” an interesting phrase…reminds me of Led Zeppelin for some reason…interesting.
I heard Bill Press this morning going on about McCain’s melanoma and how his complete medical file should should be disclosed to the voting public.
I already know the answer to this rhetorical question, but could any single person–regardless of the authoritarian mind bubble he or she voluntarily places upon themselves–have watched the Gibson interview and come away thinking, “Yeah, it’s OK if she’s President of our country some day.”
Who was it, Harrison, who caught a cold during his inauguration speech and died a month later?
Squeezing lemons in a darn sight harder than typing in my experience, and there are voice programs for computers, have been for ages. Oh well.
If he lied about how he bbqs that’s a HUGE sin. A man shouldn’t lie about his ‘cue skills even to cover up a physical weakness. Lies catch up to you, as Julia astutely points out.
Me personally, I’d brush or mist on the liquid. But either way the ribs are gonna char from the sugar in the citrus juice and the application of the liquid is going to disrupt the rub. All in all, the recipe sounds sorta nasty.
But back to the politics: McCain’s health is now even more of an issue because of his very scary choice for VP, the Red Queen herself Sarah Palin.
If Mr. McCain’s wartime injuries, incurred forty years ago, are so presently debilitating, he’s not fit to be President.
Mr. McCain’s propaganda handlers seem ill-informed about the tech savvy of Nay pilots and officers, even those from decades ago. Navigation at sea, useful for finding bombing targets and returning to a floating airport in the middle of a cold and hostile night-time ocean, requires a numeracy, presence of mind, and technical ability well beyond most land lubbers’. After St. John returned from prison and to active duty, he commanded the Navy’s premier Naval aviation officer and flight training base at Pensacola, Florida, requiring technical and organizational skills well above average.
When St. John went from there to shepherding CongressCritters as a Navy lobbyist, before running for Congress himself, he could remember the favorite bar and drink (and where they parked their limos) of every CongressCritter and staffer he worked with. No mean feat, and a little more challenging than point and click. Having been in Congress for decades, Mr. McCain has mastered organizational, lobbying and legislating about such “non-technical” issues as massive Pentagon procurement programs.
None of which means McSame is competent or qualified to be President. It does mean his propagandists trot out the POW label as if turned Bruce McCain into Batman. He’s not even Robin in drag. He’s just an old coot with the same, “I want it, I need it, I have to have it” ego as George Bush, but without his smarts or ability to think first and act second.
I think the quality of the President’s “mind” is the most important.
When McCain said the fundamentals of the economy are strong, he undoubtedly meant compared to the economy at the Hanoi Hilton when he was a POW.
That’s it! That’s the achilles heel to this whole McCain campaign. You can lie about your record, your service, your platform, but you CAN’T lie about your BBQ skills!!! This just won’t do. Joe Sixpack won’t sit still for it.
McCain lies about Grill Skillz.
It seems that McCrazy’s war wounds must have broken every “honest” bone in his body…..
That’s not the point. The point is the senior vote. It’s important not to lose it. The Obama camp should skirt all potential charges of ageism etc.
Ooo, that’s a good one!
You know johnny Seven Tables would use the internet, but for the fact that Al Gore invented it, doncha know… There is some wonderful and sophisticated software out here that a rich guy like McMoron could buy, learn and use with nary a keyboard or mouse in reach.
Tapper is such a tool. I wonder if his kneepads are wearing out yet?
That is basically where I come down on this charade that McCain and McCain’s sycophants are busting forth with. I frankly don’t give a S if McCain wants to pretend that he is computer illiterate at the same time he tries to shame “liberals” and get sympathy. He’s lying about it, and he’s being a lazy ass cretin. But most importantly, due to at least those two reasons, he is not taking advantage of one of the greatest tools available for knowing what is going on in the world and how to interact within it.
McCain is not qualified to be President of the United States. Period.
reminds me of Led Zeppelin for some reason…interesting.
hey – knock that off. *g*
Is that an appropriate topic for this blog?
hahaha
I’d like to hear from Richard Clark, the guy who says cyberterrorism is the the thing to really be scared of. Forget about airplanes flying into buildings, nukes in LA, or hurricanes in Texas. When al queda figures out how to bring down the electrical grid on the entire eastern seaboard, it’ll help to have a President who foresaw and prevented that kind of attack.
Let me put it this way. I once heard patrons of the LBPH program were split. Some of the patrons (very senior mostly) were happy with yea old tape recordings and records talking books. Some of the patrons wanted to go electronic big time. I can’t blame the very elderly, for liking what works for them, particularly elderly suffering from numerous complaints who need help touching buttons.
He doesn’t need to know what is going on in the world, because every decision that will be made in his administration will come from the Neocon shadow government in the basement… He’ll have plenty of time for photo-ops and
brush clearingBBQs.Bush44
Anyway where the heck is the video on GritTv of Flanders and Bugliosi. I really want to see it.
lol
Me 2
It’s supposed to be on at 8PM.
McCain harvested the first blackberry…
Er, you forget we had a president who had very debilitating disabilities. FDR. I am not sticking up for McCain here, because he doesn’t deserve it. He’s full of sh*t I am sure. I am however sticking up for persons with disability.
McCain isn’t very smart, but he’s technically competent. He’s just so old and sexist that he still thinks drafting on a keyboard is “typing”, and only girls who can stand up, turn around, and fetch him a coffee while looking pretty do that.
There isn’t a lot of “mind” there, less than Bush I would say, but with an ego much like Bush’s. Thinkin’ never got St. John very far, so he substitutes an image of toughness. He’s just not very tough when it comes to stickin’ to principles or doing the right thing. I don’t think he can remember what his used to be; now, they’re whatever his lobbyist/handlers tell him there are for the moment. But hey, did you know John crashed five planes and spent five years in prison? The only qualification for being president he can think of.
Progressives should not be making personal attacks. Nader doesn’t. Obama shouldn’t….
He’s an old, lazy playboy.
Anybody see this?
They should call out the BS.
cyberterrorism…
is that covered on any of the CD’s that that guy gives away on teevee (the guy who says -”please – try my product”)?
No, I haven’t. It is McSame’s mental disabilities and priorities I object to, not that he can’t raise his arms high enough for a proper salute because of wartime injuries. It is that he substitutes injury for qualification, taking cynicism to heights foreign even for Cheney.
Voice programs, the good ones, are very hard to teach, and very hard to learn. Try one. Go to a library which has the equipment. Learning all the commands is difficult for those with cognitive impairment. Even some of the most proficient users have difficulty navigating websites. The web is not disability friendly. Some sites sound like: link, link link, link adnauseum, and go on like that for 15 minutes, before there’s content. Some sites including gov. websites are a total nightmare.
John McCain is
bullishbullsh*t on America.I just listened to his comment…”we have to have a 9/11 commission”…hmmm…he didn’t say a commission like the 9/11 commission…he said, “we have to have a 9/11 commission”. Wish he hadn’t been misspeaking.
John McCain
I’m wondering if McCain will expect Palin to do his typing for him? Good training, you know.
As long as he can stand behind her and gaze.
Ick not the “lemon” I suppose we are referring too.
He can raise his arms to his chest. Do any of us need to raise our arms above our waists to use a computer? Not unless the damn thing is on top of the refrigerator. Please spare me the POW scenario. We get it. Like about half a million other guys, he was in Vietnam.
Thank you for your service to the country. Get a new tune.
As Gimp at Daily Kos pointed out, anybody with a strong will can overcome a disability. I met a man this year who only has one arm and no legs. He dresses himself, walks, eats, text messages… you name it.
McCain’s cronies may win him the election, but they better hope their religion isn’t true. As I understand it, sinning with intent to beg forgiveness alienates the love of their savior. So all sins are not forgiven. Lying habitually to place a dangerous man in the White House, a move that could signal the end of America’s beautiful run, could earn them an eternity of torment. The truth is that the lies will only hurt the public (and there is no justice in the end).
Lemmee ask this, who gives a shit one way or another? It was the weakest ad Obama has done. What bullshit.
3 million total.
it did sound a bit odd to me, but then the idea of salt, pepper and garlic powder as a “spice rub” is a little scary in and of itself.
Actually, I can’t quite imagine using garlic powder on anything.
McSame’s age isn’t his debility, it’s his being hidebound, being resistant to change. It’s his prejudices, his sexism, his Cheney-like substitution of aggressive, punitive action for thoughtful action or purposeful inaction, where that’s the smarter course. He’s like a bum at a Vegas roulette wheel; he’s a good time until the liquor takes hold and he’s no longer winning – in Vegas, where McCain is famous for his all-nighters, both are sure things. Obama is like a top athletics coach who knows his players, his plays, the opposition, his league and his budget.
We’re not Nader or Obama. We’re people, citizens, who are pissed off that some old coot who has been in government for 28 years or so is too f’g lazy to take a little time to learn how to use an extremely important tool that would have helped him know the world as a Senator, and would help him to know the world as a President of the United States. Plus he’s lying to our faces about it.
He’s not running for hall monitor of the Old Folk’s Home. He’s running for President of the United States.
They only pretend to be religious. The Republic Party comes before all else.
The senior vote is crucial. Obama needs to get his ass in gear and make sure they don’t think McCain “is like them”, particulalry since Obama has already been associated with the laptop starbucks crowd. I think he should hit hard with Medicare D, Big Pharma, etc. That’s how “young whippersnapper” Chris Murphy (D-CT) beat that stinking entrenched incumbent (BigPharma (R) -CT) Nancy Johnson, who pretended to be a nice blue-haired lady sympathizing with the elderly, but really sucked big bucks from Big Pharma, you name it.
Wow, those Geico spokescavemen are gonna be pissed!
I am a retired real estate broker who is 6 years younger than McCain. I’ve been using a computer since 1990. I keep in touch with lots of my friends, keep a blog, get a huge portion of my daily news and make forms for the club I am president of, all on my trusty computer.
John’s old and getting older every day. He is too damned old to be president of the US and most older Americans know it. Most of us know that it’s a gruelling job that no 72 year old man should even be trying to get. The computer thing is just one more indication that he is from a different time. This is not a good thing, no matter how you look at it.
OT: Here is a summary of some of my earlier comments on poll analyses.
The campaigns should now be focusing on the uncommitted voters in the swing states, particularly Ohio.
Per Nate Silver’s* FiveThirtyEight.com:
– McCain has a seven-point lead in Ohio, making him a 70-to-30 favorite in that race.
– If McCain wins Ohio, he has a 77% chance of winning the election.
– If McCain loses Ohio, he has 97% chance of losing the election.
Per Charles Franklin at pollster.com:
Per 236.com:
So, the name of the game is now: “Ladies’ Choice”.
* Silver’s methodology predicts the November outcome. It is complex and has been very successful for sporting events and some primaries. IIRC, Chuck Todd and Kieth Olbermann had good things to say about him. I also recommend Wikipedia’s entry on fivethirtyeight.com and this comment by Sam Wang: http://election.princeton.edu/…..yeightcom/
Sure you we all know that. The rethuglican echo chamber is the problem here. Obama has to combat that by proving his stupid ad did not in anyway mean to insult X million seniors or persons with disabilities.
Dec 21, 2007 – McCain says : “he doesn’t use a computer at all”
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=c56_1198245339
Ah, there you are, Jake – back on the tire swing. Doesn’t that feel better? Do you want your binky?
Being P.O.d does not justify a lack of civilities. The Presidency should be about the issues that affect the common citizen–not the injuries that a man took in wartime or the color of a man’s skin….
No one should ever sit in this office over 70 years old, and that I know.
Dwight D. Eisenhower
‘When asked in an interview if he is a Mac or PC guy, McCain answered: “neither, I’m an illiterate that has to rely on my wife for all of the assistance I can get.’
There are those who chafe a bit when people take shots at McCain’s age, but there’s always a deeper point lurking behind many of those shots (cheap or not) — leading the world’s sole superpower in this digital era should require basic understanding of those things which drive the modern culture and economy.
Atrios responds:
“I think in 2008 computer use and understanding of the internet should be part of the basic skill set we expect from people in positions of prominent public leadership. It’s pretty much impossible to have any kind of understanding of how people in the modern world go about their lives and work without that. The internet is not a fad or the playground for 17 year olds.”
http://www.eschatonblog.com/20…..7354515288
Oh dear God – how long is he going to drag out this POW drama. Get an adaptive keyboard – end of story!
Harry Reid:
“McCain, he said, “doesn’t have the temperament to be the president of the United States. Everyone who’s ever worked with John McCain knows of his temper. It’s explosive to say the least.”
Reid went more macro and accused Republicans, in general, of using “Orwellian dialect.” “Whatever they say, believe the opposite,” he said. “

voice recognition software?
Jake Tapper must enjoy being a tool ’cause he does it so often. What an idiot !
I understand completely what you’re saying, and I agree (for that matter, JFK wasn’t all that well either, and he did better).
What I do have an issue with is that his campaign is fundamentally dishonest on a level so profound that you can track his stories changing from one moment to the next, so prolifically dishonest that outlets that have resisted for eight years of Bush calling a lie a lie (and Karl Rove, for crying out loud) are compelled to point out that they’re lying, and that with a number of outlets, it still works.
Whether because they’re cowed or because they’re dishonest, or because they’re partisan hacks (see above), a significant (if, thankfully, shrinking) chunk of the media are letting them get away with this. Malcolm is one of the people who drive’s the LA Times’s political coverage, and he’s carried across the country by the company that owns his paper. Tapper’s on the catbird seat at ABC.
That’s a problem. Whether McCain can comb his hair? Who cares. Celebrities and rich people get their hair combed.
Whether he can be alternately hale and hearty or a man crippled for the last forty years? Problem.
McCain on video tape admitting his computer illiteracy:

No, it shouldn’t be about either McCain’s supposed injuries or the color of Obama’s skin. It should not be about McCain’s age or his unqualified vp. Let us all know when you come up with a way to get the Republicans to discuss issues, and perhaps the Democrats can get back to that.
Everytime we ignore the Republican nastiness and keep talking the issues, the numbers go south. So, unless you can arrange a cease-fire, it’s probably going to continue this way. Too bad, too. There are a lot of important things to discuss, if we could only get the GOP to do that.
CNN on McCain’s lack of computer skills.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48ipiTj2ymQ
Howard Kurtz in today’s Washington Post mentions the same thing.
Yes, but we can’t let the McCain campaign try to get a millions of reliable voters (seniors) think that they can identify with him, because he “has similiar problems, and therefore “understands them.”" That’s my issue.
Not being able to use a computer is an “issue”, and McCain not being able to use a computer, due to the fact that he’s lazy, is also an “issue”, and it does have, has had and will have an “affect (sic) on the common citizen.
If you want to pretend that my comment had anything to do with McCain’s injuries than you are either as in the dark as McCain is or you are just as dishonest as McCain is.
I think you agree with me??
If it’s “Ladies’ choice” then all the ladies need to read this – (I understand this might also be posted on Democratic Underground today)
Forgive me, those of you who don’t like these kind of forwards, but I found this interesting, and while most of you are hopefully not voting for McCain, you may know some people who are, to pass this on to. Kate is someone I know, so this is not a made up story that is just going around without a source.
good luck to us all, y
(Note from Kate: This shocking account was written by Ana Dubey, a friend of my cousin and her husband, who have known Ana for many years. Ana has a PhD in psychology and has a private practice in San Francisco. My cousin’s husband went to business school with Ana’s husband, who has since started and sold a number of successful companies. Ana’s husband is currently a Managing Director of a private equity firm in the Bay Area. Ana and her husband are not political activists and don’t have any personal ax to grind. In fact, in writing this account of her experience with John McCain, Ana is acting outside of her own economic self-interest as she and her husband are among the top 3-5% of our population who would benefit from the McCain tax/economic policies. Please pass this on to anyone you know who might vote for John McCain. Also please post it on blogs and send it to newspapers and radio stations).
Dear Friends,
I have written about my encounter with McCain and his family in 1999 — please feel free to share my story with whomever you think might be considering voting for him.
Ana
MY HOLIDAY WITH JOHN McCAIN
It was just before John McCain’s last run at the presidential nomination in 2000 that my husband and I vacationed in Turtle Island in Fiji with John McCain, Cindy, and their children, including Bridget (their adopted Bangladeshi child).
It was not our intention, but it was our misfortune to be in close quarters with John McCain for almost a week since Turtle Island has a small number of bungalows and their focus on communal meals force all vacationers who are there at the same time to get to know each other intimately.
He arrived at our first group meal and started reading quotes from a pile of William Faulkner books with a forest of Post-Its sticking out of them. As an English Literature major myself, my first thought was “if he likes this so much, why hasn’t he memorized any of this yet?” I soon realized that McCain actually thought we had come on vacation to be a volunteer audience for his “readings” which then became a regular part of each meal. Out of politeness, none of the vacationers initially protested at this intrusion into their blissful holiday, but people’s buttons definitely got pushed as the readings continued day after day.
Unfortunately this was not his only contribution to our mealtime entertainment. He waxed on during one meal about how Indo-Chine women had the best figures and that our American corn-fed women just couldn’t meet up to this standard. He also made it a point that all of us should stop Cindy from having dessert as her weight was too high and made a few comments to Amy, the 25 year old wife of the honeymooning couple from Nebraska that she should eat less as she needed to lose weight.
McCain’s appreciation of the beauty of Asian women was so great that David the American economist had to move his Thai wife to the other side of the table from McCain as McCain kept aggressively flirting with and touching her.
Needless to say I was irritated at his large ego, and his rude behavior towards his wife and other women, but decided he must have some redeeming qualities as he had adopted a handicapped child from Bangladesh. I asked him about this one day and his response was shocking –“Oh, that was Cindy’s idea – I didn’t have anything to do with it. She just went and adopted this thing without even asking me. You can’t imagine how people stare when I wheel this ugly, black thing around in a shopping cart in Arizona. No, it wasn’t my idea at all.”
I actively avoided McCain after that, but unfortunately one day he engaged me in a political discussion which soon got us on the topic of the active US bombing of Iraq at that time. I was shocked when he said “if I was in charge, I would nuke Iraq to teach them a lesson”. Given McCain’s personal experience with the horrors of war I had expected a more balanced point of view. I commented on the tragic consequences of the nuclear attacks on Japan during WWII – but no, he was not to be dissuaded. He went on to say that if it was up to him he would have dropped many more nuclear bombs on Japan. I rapidly extricated myself from this conversation as I could tell that his experience being tortured as a POW didn’t seem to have mellowed out his perspective but rather had made him more aggressive, and vengeful towards the world.
My final encounter with McCain was on the morning that he was leaving Turtle Island. Amy and I were happily eating pancakes when McCain arrived and told Amy that she shouldn’t be having pancakes because she needed to lose weight. Amy burst into tears at this abusive comment. I felt fiercely protective of Amy and immediately turned to McCain and told him to leave her alone. He became very angry and abusive towards me, and said “don’t you know who I am” and I looked him in the face and said “yes, you are the biggest asshole I have ever met” and headed back to my cabin. I am happy to say that later that day when I arrived at lunch I was given a standing ovation by all the guests for having stood up to McCain’s bullying.
Although I have shared my McCain story informally with friends, this is the first time I am making this public. I almost did so in 2000, when McCain first announced his bid for the Republican nomination but it soon became apparent that George Bush was the shoo-in candidate and so I did not act then. However, now that there is a very real possibility that McCain could be elected as our next president, I feel it is my duty as an American citizen to share this story. I can’t imagine a more scary outcome for America than that this abusive, aggressive man should lead our nation. I have observed him in intimate surroundings as he really is, not how the media portrays him to be. If his attitudes toward women, and his treatment of his own family are even a small indicator of his real personality, then I shudder to think what will happen to America were he to be elected as our President.
ding!
Who cares if McCain can’t type? Can he perform the job for which he’s applying? His campaign knows the answer and discussion of the issues would answer that question, loud and clear.
Thus we end up talking about Paris and Britney.
It’s hard to tell when comments read like haiku.
Yeah?
Well…are any of these various handicapped individuals you list that use computers former POWs?
I thought not.
I absolutely agree.
I suspect, though, that it’s probably more important to talk about what his stand on Social Security would mean to them (for instance, had their retirement stipend been in private hands, how would they have fared this past few months?).
I have a pretty bright line on these things. Gov Palin’s family issues: her problem, none of my business, and everyone, particularly Gov. Palin, needs to stop sharing. Gov. Palin’s disgusting stand on rape kits: my problem, if she’s asking for unprecedented control over the government I pay for.
Senator McCain’s physical issues? If they don’t impede his ability to do his job, not my problem. If they do, maybe my problem. I’d assumed that a man who was holding down a full-time job and campaigning for president while raising underaged children had to be fairly vital. Now I’m told that they severely restrict him.
I know that restrictions can be overcome, but his campaign can’t seem to make up their minds whether they exist or not.
JMO, what’s important is to tell seniors that we understand they don’t have staffs and hundreds of millions to fall back on, so we’re going to make sure the government is there for them.
John McCain isn’t.
Wow. Newsweek poll, via MSNBC:
Among women voters:
McCain-53%.
Obama-37%.
OT per tv US evacuating US citizens from Bolivia – Us places Bolivia on list with Mynamar, and Venezuela
I guess there was a vacancy on the axis of evil list
Ian up over at the Mothership
Thanks!
Well I think there is a perfect little avenue for Obama to thrust in here. If Rethugs talk of disability and Obama’s supposed “bias.” He can bring up Big Pharma, Medicare D and all the crap that’s been thrown at seniors and veterans by Rethugs, and how his administration would make thing better, and how McCain would make things go south. Obama shouldn’t miss the opportunity.
Amen. That should one of the Obama camp’s mantras.
You
are welcome
???
I don’t think using a computer is an “issue”. Health care is an issue. Iraq policy is an issue. What to do with the Wall Street Meltdown is an issue. We all know staffers deal with the administrative parts of these things. Obama or McCain. I think Nader has the right instincts for progressives whether or not he types himself or not.
Using a computer may not be an issue.
But knowing what can and cannot be done by computers is an issue. Knowing about how information travels on the internet is an issue. Keeping the internet open and available to all and not charging content providers extra for priority service nor charging users extra to access whatever content they desire ins an issue.
So if he’s not using the computer and the internet, then how is he able to understand how these tools are used and should be made available?
Then we disagree. Of course it would help if you were actually addressing what it is that we disagree about instead of making s’t up.
McCain doesn’t need to type in order to use a computer. That has been established in this thread. And I didn’t say otherwise. You did. McCain would benefit knowing more about every “issue” that you tick off and he would benefit in his ability to improve upon what becomes of all of those issues if he would have long ago learned how to use a computer. And it’s not too late for him, except he’s a lazy man who refuses to take the initiative to learn. It speaks, as they say, volumes about what kind of man he is. He’s lazy and stubborn man who is willfully unqualified to be running for president.
I see now that it’s the vote for Nader in order to defeat Obama game that you are playing. How innovative. How 2000.
Your constant steam of dishonesty in your replies to me leads me to believe that you are in McCain’s tank, not Nader’s.
Tweety just dropped this little nugget:
The McCain campaign leased the rights to “Barracuda” by Heart a year ago!!! So, it sounds like they planned on Palin all along.
WADR, insofar as Nader has made cause with Grover “drown government in a bathtub” Norquist while claiming that both parties are the same, I emphatically do not believe that Nader has the right instincts for progressives.
He may believe that after three days the stone will be rolled aside and government will rise from that bathtub (and bluntly, that’s the only excuse I can see for him).
I have more faith in the constitution than I do in its ability to rise from the dead. For that matter, I have more faith in the economy than its ability to rise from the dead.
Call me faith-based.
That’s not right.
What’s not right? That Freedomnow hasn’t been dishonest in every reply to me by misrepresenting what I’ve written? He or she in that regard has been dishonest. Or is it “not right” that Freedomnow is not, in reality, a McCain supporter using ‘Vote for Nader’ as a draw in places such as Firedoglake where he or she knows for sure that ‘Vote for McCain’ ain’t gonna get it done? Either way, Freedomnow has been dishonest in the conversation I have been having with him or her.
Thank you for your kind response.
Well ya know, it’s not like McCain can afford to hire someone to do the typing for him…
If only there was something that would recognize his voice and translate it into typed words..OH WAIT!
I’m tired of excuses. Seriously, when did Republicans become such freakin WHINY BABIES??
I want the McCain campaign to explicitly reassure Americans that McCain is not currently taking medication for chronic pain or for any other chronic condition.
Can he push the BUTTON?!!! That is the only question that we need answered!
Voice recognition is premised on the reality that McCain can actually TALK (without notes or teleprompter).
McCain has sufficient dexterity in 1974 to be returned to flight status by the Navy, and flew high-performance attack aircraft, including qualifying in carrier landings. I would think that a keyboard would not be beyond his physical capabilities.
As long as it can recognize the two words, ”My friends….” I think that voice recognition software should work.

I think they were planning on running against Hillary Clinton and using that song to cast aspersions and work up the crowds.
On the Rachel Maddow show this evening, it was mentioned that the Republicans sent a high-power attorney to Alaska in July to assist in getting the troopergate investigation stopped. That would indicate that Palin was short-listed as long ago as July.
Per http://suzieqq.wordpress.com/2…..h-records/
Of course Palin says that she is going to be the first Vice President to assist “special needs children”…imagine McCain in diapers.
Or maybe they were going to use the “Barracuda” song AGAINST Hillary…the lyrics aren’t very complimentary to the “Barracuda”.
