As the US financial system totters on the brink of collapse, serious and responsible people are asking: How will this help Republicans?
There’s no question that financial Armageddon will help the GOP is axiomatic. Everything does.
For you skeptics, I’m including an severely abbreviated list of things that are known to help Republicans: terrorism, lack of terrorism, strong Democrats, weak Democrats, domestic spying, MoveOn, gay marriage, expensive gas, snowmobiles, Hillary Clinton, and rain.
Some Michigan Republicans are finding a silver lining in the dark cloud of (other people’s) home foreclosures. The chair of the Republican Party of Macomb County has announced that he will use a list of foreclosed homes to challenge voters at the polls:
“We will have a list of foreclosed homes and will make sure people aren’t voting from those addresses,” party chairman James Carabelli told Michigan Messenger in a telephone interview earlier this week. He said the local party wanted to make sure that proper electoral procedures were followed. [Michigan Messenger]
Since initial reports of the foreclosure plan, the Michigan Republicans have announced that they won’t be using the foreclosure list after all–which helps Republicans by demonstrating how mean and unreasonable Democrats are always accusing Republicans of doing what they say they’re going to do. At least one former Republican election worker is on the record saying that the plan would help Republicans if they followed through on it.
Another delightfully counterintuitive way that global financial Armageddon helps the Republicans is by tricking the Democrats into saying the economy is bad. When Democrats complain that the economy is bad, Republicans win, according to Republican Don Luskin.
But what about those voters who aren’t in foreclosure and who can’t Democrats trash talking the economy on TV because they opted to buy groceries instead of paying the electric bill? Surely those disgruntled souls will turn out for Obama in droves. Don’t worry, the GOP has it covered. Even if voters somehow miss the Democrats talking smack about the economy, the economic crisis still helps Republicans.
Gas prices near five dollars a gallon help Republicans because those who can’t afford to fill their tanks will have to stay home and sulk on election day instead of driving to the polls to vote for Democrats.
Elegant, isn’t it? When things go well, it helps Republicans. When things go badly, it helps Republicans. When Democrats criticize Republicans for making things go badly, it helps Republicans. Just ask the paid Republican operatives on the major networks. If you’re a Democrat, don’t remind people they are paid Republican operatives posing as objective commentators on a news program that purports to be unbiased. Because, well, you know…

I think this is a good way to look at McCain’s Georgia/Russia strategy too.
Nuclear armageddon?
Good for Republicans!
the Michigan Republicans have announced that they won’t be using the foreclosure list after all–
I gotta call bullshit somewhere.
Either those aren’t *real* Republicans, or..
they’re lying.
Everything is good for Rs.
all right, Ian and eCAHN..
which one of us killed the thread?
I forgot to mention the best thing that the Rs have going is the too-dumb-to-live Ds. Obama selects a nearly dead old white man as a running mate. Brilliant.
I went to get a piece of cherry pie. Don’t know about the rest.
I take it you don’t like Joe?
He’s not that old, is he? Or are you joking?
those who can’t afford to fill their tanks will have to stay home and sulk on election day instead of driving to the polls to vote for Democrats.
aha! I foil the master Repub-Plan – I can throw a rock and hit my polling place.
(consider Obama to be ahead in Indiana at this point, 1-0)
He’s old in politics, regardless of his calendar age. Can’t run on change with Biden as running mate.
I think he can.
I think he is.
The thing is, Biden does have experience. Good experience. Good Foreign Policy Experience.
How’s the pie?
Interesting tidbit…. apparently several of the gang of former swiftboaters claim to be taking a pass this time:
http://voices.washingtonpost.c…..ows_o.html
A ten mile wide meteor hurtling toward the earth would be good for the Republicans too I’m sure.
Hate is strong word, I hate Republicans. Period!
He’s running but he’s not winning. What “experience” does Biden have other than bloviating? The man who wants to divide Iraq in 3 without asking a by-your-leave? Yeah, I love that foreign policy where the U.S. tells everyone else what to do. NOT.
Pie is fabulous. Home made at the neighborhood farm stand.
Actually the Macomb County GOP Chairman only said that they wouldn’t use the foreclosure lists AT THE POLLS…he never denied that they wouldn’t use the lists to create their own “challenge list”.
GOP Head Denies Foreclosure Caging
True…and this reveals precisely what the GOP is using the Foreclosure Lists for!
They are sending out first class letters to those that are on the foreclosure lists…and if the letters are returned they will note that the resident has been evicted or has moved on their
“qualified voter list”. Then from THAT list (not the foreclosure list) they will challenge the voter who has been foreclosed upon. They will use the lists to find out who has been forced to change residency (by the letters) and THEN challenge. If the people are still IN their home then they will accept the mail and thus not be challenged.
So actually only those actually driven out of their homes will be challenged! Heartless, pathetic and unethical…
So Nowling is dissembling…no wait…LYING!
The critics never claimed that the GOP was going to bring the actual foreclosure lists into the polls and challenge OFF them, and they never said that the foreclosure lists were the ONLY part of determing people who have been foreclosed on and evicted…they said the GOP was USING the lists to challenge voters who were being foreclosed upon. And the way that Nowling has responded confirms that.
Cherry pie sounds !
Got any more?
did someone mention snowmobiles ?
Judge overturns Park Service expansion of snowmobile use in Yellowstone
he used their own data against them
and yeah, should bring out the we-hate-the-treehugger- vote
Republicans are not immune to the stock market losses. The average Joe Sixpack Republican has no stocks at all…they will be getting a reality check…but probably not before the election. They’ll get it when they have to start killing rats to eat instead of being Wal-Mart shoppers. Just watch.
I’m glad the pie is good.
I was hoping you like something.
Hold out your plate. Bought a whole pie as a backup for company in case I didn’t have time to make my favorite dessert for company-nectarine cobbler. As it turned out, I did have time to bake, company came & went and I have a full pie just for little ole me. So I’m happy to share. (Will go into the freezer in single serving zip bags tomorrow.)
Actually, I’m thinking that maybe they discovered there were a number of Rs that would be on that list.
Those things can cut both ways. As we know from experience, a lot of Rs know nothing about economics issues.
I throw like a girl. But I can crawl half a block to mine.
Linky no worky. Sounds like a good story.
Reminder: Those in power are not “Republicans”..they are Neocons. Now, if only the Republicans could figure that out….
I believe it. *g*
Like lots of stuff, but not many people at the top of the D party. (As distinguised from the R party where I like no one I can think of.)
Better Ds!
I love pie. Reminds me I need to make a date with the CBLs. I hear their pie is homemade on the spot.
Forgot what book explained that, but it has to do with the fact that neocons are all related (They Knew They Were Right is, I think, the title) and self-perpetuate, whereas mainstream Rs never mentored nor thought about succession. Thus, the R party today IS neocons. The ones who didn’t drink the KoolAde have disappeared.
I love pie. I have a recipe somewhere for unbelievable pie crust…just have to find the dang thing someday….
OT Pete Seeger special making me weep. So gentle and strong. Went thru all that blacklisting stuff for more than 15 years. Came back and pulled together, by force of talent and personality, that period of the 60s great civil right songs. “To distract you and teach you about your struggles.” What class.
It’s that Julius Caesar thing: Iraq est omnis divisa in partes tres
Want pie? You’ll love the CBLs. Lets go to Hutto this weekend… ? ! …
I’m with you on that.
Better D’s, certainly.
I don’t think they breed a lot, though. They don’t think it’s very nice. ‘g”
I won’t even mention Moose Turd Pie.
Key is lard.
Well, exactly. What I’m saying is that Joe Sixpack, USA, USA, USA…that bunch think that they are supporting Republicans, but they are supporting Neocons, who are not Republicans at all…Does that makes sense? Probably the closest to Republican would be Bob Barr…certainly not McCain, who is now a Neocon…and certainly not Palin, who is a survivalist fringe type.
that kinda begs a question (and not directed at you, particularly) *g* -
Are bars and liquor stores closed in all states on Election Days, or is that just an Indiana
thangthongthing? They breed enough to self-perpetuate. Spit.
Neocons don’t breed? There is hope!
I shit you not, I was at Finglet’s this weekend and she had an old women’s club recipe book that had a recipe in it for Jellied Moose Nose. No kidding.
Ah, missed your point. Yes, most of the country still thinks there is such a thing as Rs. Wonder how long it’ll take them to catch on that there’s only a lunatic fringe?
Don’t think they EVER close in Ca. Certainly not on election day – that’s the time to get really drunk.
heh – Rachel calling out McCrazy’s ‘rage-from-notecards’ speech today…
hmm, *somebody* mentioned that downstairs….
Doesn’t sound any more disgusting than the jellied pigs feet that my parents used to eat. Came in clear glass jars, so even if you didn’t eat it, you couldn’t avoid looking at it if it were in the house.
Lindsay, you perfectly describe the Repug 1st Commandment:
“Heads we win, tails you lose!”
That’s not true.
Yeah ! Yeah! Yeah!!!!
we even have a Pie Happy Hour
I remember those. And I remember being a China and people eating chicken’s feet. Yuck
It’s true for the last 2 presidential elections.
Yeah, but that’s pork. I can deal with pork. Snotty jelly moose nose? I bet Sarah makes it best.
If I ever get to Texas, I’m hunting your place down.
Rich Repubs and poor fringe…
The others are floating in no man’s land…and have suddenly hooked onto a fringe candidate without apparent consciousness…well, that figures. But the “center”..the old type of Repubs are investors…they are gonna lose their shirts…the fringe already has or doesn’t have much to lose…the Neocons should take a big financial hit on the economic news, because they are invested globally and this is going global. There are, of course, those who are cautious who have invested in bonds. I wonder how they will fare?
sorry eCAHN
Federal Judge Rules Against Park Service In Doubling Snowmobiles In Yellowstone
Linda Young – AHN Editor
Yellowstone, MT (AHN) – A federal judge on Monday nixed the idea of doubling the number of snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park this winter, saying that park officials had lost sight of their role as conservationists.
Starting this winter, National Park Service officials had planned to have 540 snowmobiles going through the Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks and the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway each day.
But U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan ruled for the conservationists that had sued to stop the plan, saying that it would cause too much noise, disturb wildlife and increase air pollution in the park.
Sullivan cited the National Park Service’s own data in issuing his order, saying that having that many snowmobiles in the park would “exceed the use levels recommended by NPS biologists to protect wildlife, and cause major adverse impacts to the natural soundscape in Yellowstone.”
all right y’all – I’m beginning to turn an unpleasant shade of green….
I’ve eaten moose, but not the jellied nose.
It was a Kentucky thing as well. I worked in a liquor store in college and we were closed until 6PM on election day (Polls open 6AM to 6PM local time).
No legal alcohol sales while polls open.
Hey! I’ll come out by myself and eat a whole Lemon Meringgue all by my lonesome! Mr. is working the game and I’ll need to occupy myself.
Now that sound especially tasty!!
Yum Yum!!
Maybe I missed your point.
I live in California. Los Angeles. Never saw any 24 hour liquor stores. Ever.
2 o’clock cut off even in the grocery stores.
Just what are you saying? Please explain.
Seven states have elections day booze laws.
Reminds me of my first lesson on Hogshead cheese…in LA of course. Never became a favorite.
I hate when that happens.
bwaaahaaahaaa ! bet it was from the original Joy of Cooking – they’d also show you how to field dress a squirrel on your back porch – yummy ! /s
fuckin A. rain too??
I’m sure I can get it for you, let me know if you want a transcription. And then, don’t send me any. *g*
Neocons arrive half-baked through a process not unlike immaculate conception, however, angels are not involved in this ‘manufacture’; lard is required in the rendering stages, and ‘landing’ requires suitable cabbage (or lettuce) patches strategically placed on the former planet, Pluto.
It is all quite amazing.
So sorry. Sleep well.
I like the ones I peel off the road best!!
Good point about what happens to those who used to be mainstream Rs.
My sample of one, my weekend house guest, a 80-something manufacturing business owner from VT, voted for Clinton. He hates Obama, and I can’t convince him that McCain is orders of magnitude worse. He doesn’t care about social issues, and think they’ll turn out very much the same on foreign policy or domestic policy. As far as the latter is concerned, my friend doesn’t care as he’s upper income and old with no heirs. As far as foreign policy is concerned, the best I could come up with is that McCain would bomb first and Obama would bomb second, after a feeble attempt at diplomacy. Can’t say that convinced my friend.
Lemon meringue pie is my mostest favorite.
I’ll just stick to the roadkill!!
Hey jayt.
To help you feel better. I’m 10 minutes from serving dinner: stuffed salmon, rice and white corn on the cob and broccoli.
And, yes you can.
I missed out and got the revised new edition. You’ll have to send me your squirrel secrets…
Really, though, are you working this weekend? I need pie.
Thanks. Cliche like hoist on one’s own petard comes to mind. About time.
hey firedogs – I made a few Republics heads explode at a debate last week -
when they brought up “voter fraud”
unfortunately for them – it was an audience participation forum – teehee
sorry ass Tool could not cite a single stat or source
coup de grace when I asked for a show of hands of those who thought their elderly parents might not have “approved ID” – yep, 37 out of 44
pigs
My God, what do you people do between 2 AM and 8 in the morning. *g*
Check out Bull Cook and Authentic Historical Recipes and Practices
Lard is a good thing. Refrieds aren’t the same without it.
I sorry to say this but I think your friend is a racist.
It was a Kentucky thing as well. I worked in a liquor store in college and we were closed until 6PM on election day (Polls open 6AM to 6PM local time).
Same here. Doesn’t even matter if you’ve got an “I Voted!” sticker.
There was a (not near long-enough past) time when that mattered to me…
I don’t know how todays financial news can help the R’s unless they can somehow convince the voters that it’s the D ’s fault!!
MIne, too. MOm had the hardest time getting the birthday candles to stand up in it.
Sounds like the person is just still stuck on the “greatest generation” stuff. Times have changed. To me, the biggest change is the “Armageddon” generation that has emerged that did not exist during WWII to that degree at all…those that want to create reality out of religious myths.
Older people are afraid of younger people…sort of like wanting an older doctor, thinking that they have more “experience” vs a younger doctor that may be much more familiar with current treatments and diagnostics. Oy.
Saturday 11 – 4
would love to get my Flo on for some firedogs !
Same thing we do in Texas… plan ahead!
Rachel had Madegen (sp?) on for an interview. Imagine a reporter talking to a source on camera. How radical is that?
*g* back attcha.
(me? sleep.)
Go girl!
Nope. Not a scintilla of racism. Just doesn’t see any diff between Obama & McCain on the issues he cares about.
now you tell me *g*
Oh well, my personal chef (last name is Stouffer’s – never asked for the rest) whipped up some pretty good lasagna tonight….
What is that about? Race? Or, something else?
Hopefully, President Bush can think us out of this.
BTW CREW put up its list of the 20 most corrupt Congresspeople a couple of days ago:

Perfecto! If yer outta lemon, chocalate wouldn’t break my heart.
Not me. I’m waaaaaay old and I like young doctors. I wouldn’t go to a doctor who was old.
So sorry. Sleep well.
It’s not easy being green.
Lard is a good thing.
Truer words were never spoke.
Let’s not quibble over petty philosophies, let’s eat!
does your friend still have a hand in the business or does he still receive proceeds ?
yes either way – recall McCain’s plan to tax employer provided benefits – think that means employers would have to pay on it as payroll tax – no bueno for any business owner
Hey!!! My chef too!!! I love the mac and cheese…gawd…that is my most favorite comfort food…although, I have tons of other ones too.
Bad news: My writing partner’s sister-in-law’s mother doesn’t like McCain but won’t vote for a Black man.
Good news: Met a really nice gal in line today who had a Yes We Can button on. She told me she registered 15 new dems yesterday at a blood drive.
His age may have something to do with it, but that’s not the crux.
Give you a specific example. He thinks an important part of the solution to the energy crisis is a high speed freight line from coast to coast. Rs won’t do it because they’re in the pocket of auto & oil. Ds won’t do it because they’re in the pocket of truckers union. He just doesn’t see any meaningful difference.
I agree !! Let’s eat!!
While we can still afford it!!
What have you been sniffing?
My “primary care” physician was a former Marine Corps Officer (VN). I finally got tired of his scowly ass and found a female md who has some compassion!
Hey, I wasn’t talking about you way back when.
Now..that is interesting. I think he has some good points there.
Made me laugh again…that was a favorite in our house.
No one from Mass Made the list?
F****** amazing! Those other guys must really be bad!!
Van Morrison or Muppets?
Looks kinda “snarky”…?
At 83, he is still the owner, and is very active. Last week, for example, he was at a machinery convention in Chicago & walked (he exaggerates) 30 miles in the display hall. Have to admit that his description of some of the monster machine tools and their precise tolerance results without much human intervention was pretty impressive.
He’s an old style R who puts the country first with certain pre-notions about how that should be done. But he’s no idealogue and is verrrry well informed.
Yep. Older doctors have a tendency to think some things are all in your head – I know when something hurts. Young ones are so much nicer.
New post: can we lose choice for real?
He always has good points. That’s what I like about him. Makes for interesting conversations.
specially jar heads
The Muppets were very big in our house….our true favorite was “Why are there so many Songs about Rainbows?”
Catch y’alls later, gotta find that moose nose and feed my face.
Yes, sweetie. I went back and saw that.
I’ll say it again. Whew!
Funny, until this very moment I thought Van wrote it for Hardnose the Highway! Dang, 36 years of blindness.
Yessie yessie. Me too.
Also, One Little Star from Big Bird something feature.
I’m getting tears just thinking about it.
Okay, I’m a baby.
The local Seeger special is ending. Im going to make a contribution just cause it helped my mood so much. Thanks.
I love to talk to the old-timers…much wisdom…sometimes they get stuck in their era, but they always have great nuggets of wisdom.
RevBev!!!
Yay for a better mood.
Thanks. Ive been sick today, so it took alot. Night-night
Seems like you just made an excellent case for not even caring about who wins. And apparently voting, once again, like so many did using the same argument in 2000 and 2004…for Nader.
As for bloviating…isn’t that what Nader has made his whole career upon…at least since the mid-1980’s.
Well, Obama IS taller and more handsome…if that matters.
You also get to be part of an historic moment in time if Obama wins.
Tell her Obama is as white as he is black. It might inspire her.
He might well be right about this, but it’s the Dems who will try to build new commuter trains to cut down on auto traffic in and around cities. That’s probably more important since it can be applied more places than one or two high-speed cross-country lines.
