As mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, John McCain’s running mate signed off on a budget charging rape victims for their own sexual assault exams. Police Chief Charlie Fannon, a Sarah Palin appointee, made the change.
Congratulations to Jacob Alperin-Sheriff of the Huffington Post who found the smoking gun, and to the Daily Kos commenters who first raised the issue.
Palin’s spokesperson claimed that Palin did not support charging rape victims for their own exams and implied that her boss was unaware of the policy. The State of Alaska later passed a law outlawing the practice. Ironically, the state had to ban victim-pay rape exams in order to qualify for funding under the Violence Against Women Act, one of Democrative vice presidential nominee Joe Biden’s signature legislative achievements.

Thanks Lindsay. This is really unbelievable.

As far as Palin’s excuse that she wasn’t “aware,” that’s what we pay our elected leaders to do, to be “aware.” If she really means it, she can return her salary.
Hey people,
I have reached that point where I have determined that if Sara Palin opens here mouth she is lying.
You know, except in reallyextremely violent cases, the main purpose of the rape exam is to collect evidence for the police and prosecution to use.
They don’t charge burglary victims for the fingerprint dusting, not the estate of the murder victim for the autopsy. Why only this one kind of forensic exam?
Didn’t I hear that Wassila was the Meth capital of Alaska too. You have to understand what is important in Wassila. Is anyone looking to see if there is anyone in Wassila been hired for a wedding?
well LOOKY HERE
Palin Still Holding On To $73 Million For Project To ‘Nowhere’
The original Bridge to Nowhere may be dead — but Sarah Palin is holding on to $73 million in fed money to build a scaled down Bridge or Ferry to Nowhere.
TPM
Sarah just hasn’t gotten around to it yet. Who says crime doesn’t pay?
John over at AmericaBlog has been covering this extensively. Here’s a post from earlier today based on what a reader wrote to him covering an angle which fits into the larger picture of the wackos on the right and their agenda on controlling woman’s bodies.
Did Palin consider “rape kits” a form of abortion?
I’ve been struggling to come up with a legitimate reason why they would charge rape victims for the collection of evidence. There isn’t one. It’s discrimination
I heard she was planning to take it to the track and bet it all on a 3-legged greyhound named “Lucky.”
How can this micro manager not be aware of what her appointee is doing? she’s creeping me out.
Do they bet on the Ididerod (sp)?
please email me. my mail to you came back.
tex betsy at g mail
Wait until the ladies at The View get into this!!!
I want this crap in a 527 and the one Planned Parenthood did defending the protection of children vs. predators on all Court TV, reality crime shows, and women’s talk shows.

a RADICAL extremist …pass it on…willing to risk NUCLEAR war with Russia
dumber than a box of rocks too
Once again, this is how conservatives illustrate how out of whack their priorities are.
just mailed ya
I’m certain, although I have no idea if it is a state sanctioned activity. Wouldn’t surprise me.
As part of a rape victim’s exam besides gathering evidence, testing for STD’s is the offering of emergency contraception…..is THIS the reason why?
It is my understanding that either the emergency contraceptive is provided there at the treating hospital OR a prescription is given to the victim to fill …… which would not be part of the rape kit expense……
Inquiring minds would like to know…..
I agree. Pretty good bet even (most of) her ardent fundie supporters wouldn’t approve of a policy that penalizes rape victims.
Ooooooowweeee, Sarah Palin.
The All-American woman.
Looking good.
And found this comparison on rape and violent crimes by state….
Forcible rape rate by State
and you have one image to look at and critique
The graph is a little vague. What is the period of time in which Alaska has 81.1 (reported) incidents of rape?
Aren’t there more men in AK than other states, though?
OH MY …we have a major talent here
Texbetsy!!!!!
please post that work of art
I found this over at Americablog a couple of days ago, digging around on this site this is what they have ….
Very Christian she is NOT. Money over compassion for your fellow man. Sounds familiar?? Must be a republican… their god seems to be green, like in greenbacks. Gimmie Gimmie I want more $$$$$ Screw the poor they don’t count as Gods children just the republicans DO….
History repeating again and again, the rich want it all!! $$$$
According to the 2000 census, women comprise 48.3% of the Alaska population. The national average is 50.7%.
I am so glad this is getting airplay. It does need to go to all “The View” and all the places where likely borderline Palin supporters hang out. John Aravosis (AmericaBlog)is calling Eleanor Smeal on Monday to push her into doing an ad on this.
TexBetsy – how is Snarkassandra’s mom?
Alaska: Where the men are men and the caribou are nervous.
I do a lot of water cooler campaigning. I have a good feel for what resonates. This issue would make the best attack ad. There is no defense It’s Biden’s legislation that protected women from this. She lied about it. COME ON We need aggressive offensive attacks. Mean and factual. I emailed the Obama campaign about this.

BB you got it down good for you:>)
I may have missed this at HuffPo because of the super-mega-lotsa blogs that come out all day and night there. I count on Firedoglake and Daily Kos to catch these things, and this time I owe you the thanks, Lindsay.
How do you spell despicable? Oh, nevermind, I got it, it’s S-a-r-a-h P-a-l-i-n.
Neo-feminism is exactly like neo-conservatism: they are both the opposite of the original concept.
Racist Portrayal of Obama at Gingerich/Romney “Value Voters Summit”
WASHINGTON — Activists at a conservative evangelical political forum snapped up boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap, with an arrow saying “Better flavor if pointed toward Mecca”.
Even more, the box suggested that the US borders would be opened and the country flooded with “Mexicans” if Obama was elected.
Ms. Palin is the quintessential anti-feminist.
The GOP hates the notion of community. They can’t win with it. That’s because the party’s wealthy funders don’t want to use their tax dollars to pay for anyone else’s welfare; they do want everyone else to pay for theirs. They don’t want to contribute to the cost of attractive, organized, well-managed communities which attract their businesses, their employees and executives, their living and retirement communities. The GOP can’t abide the notion of community because of its implied commitment. They want to free-ride off the commitment of their less well off, one way they stay wealthy and others never get there.
Ms. Palin, for example, thinks its wrong to use community funds, tax dollars, to pay for law and order. She thinks it’s wrong to use community money to verify and documenting sexual assault or rape — the classic crime whitey is afeared will be done by uppity boys. She thinks it’s wrong to use community contributions to compile evidence to investigate, convict and stop sexual predators.
Why is that? Because in white Alaska the only perpetrators could be white huntin’ shootin’ and fishin’ Goopers? Because to do so might encourage women to report crimes and abuse against them? Then they might get uppity.
Making women pay as much as $1200/rape kit means that only the wealthy will report their abuse and demand that their government enforce their rights and the community’s norms against those who abuse them. That’s what making women pay for their own rape kits accomplishes. It’s a form of pay-as-you-go law enforcement, the natural extension of pay-as-you-go government lawyering and pay-as-you-go legislating.
The only change Ms. Palin will bring to Washington is that the GOP’s new Barnacle will wear a skirt. Well, and not know how to legislate laws or manage more than a PTA-size budget. She will have extensive experience in using the power of government to seek personal retribution, pretty much what government’s for in the Bush era.

Obama/Biden should jump on this. The American Nurses Association just endorsed them. Why don’t they enlist a group of emergency room nurses and hold a press conference with Joe Biden, author of the Violence Against Women Act, and denounce Palin for victimizing victims?
Perhaps they could also enlist some domestic violence advocates and have them speak to the ramifications of the Monagan firing. I have read that he was strong advocate for victims of rape and domestic violence.
Wearing a skirt doesn’t make you an advocate for women.
Come on 527s!
(female actor/narrator):
“Joe Biden stood up for women and authored the Violence Against Women Act. He calls it “the single most significant legislation that I’ve crafted in my 35 years.”
And Sarah Palin? As Mayor of Wasilla, she required rape victims to pay hundreds of dollars for their own evidence-gathering rape examinations.
How out of touch is Sarah Palin? The AK legislature had to pass a bill making it illegal for Sarah Palin to charge rape victims.
Sarah Palin: Wrong for women, wrong for America.”
Thank you Henry! How do we make this happen?
P.S. What better actor to narrate this ad than Jodi Foster who portrayed a rape victim in the movie The Accused?
