So the McCain campaign runs attack ads against Barack Obama basically saying he wants to diddle your five year old, and what does "Democratic Consultant" James Carville say about it on CNN?
CARVILLE: And John McCain, deep down inside my heart, you know, as you know, I’ve said before I admire McCain. I don’t believe he knew about it. I hope somebody asked him. But I refuse to believe that John McCain agreed to airing this spot. I know he says I’m John McCain, I paid for it but they have that in the can and they do it. It I don’t think he knew about it. I really don’t.
You’re kidding me, right? The Republicans have made this campaign about character, once again. They’ve smeared Obama with the ugliest, most disgusting, distorted ads we’ve seen since Willie Horton, and what does Carville do? He lets McCain off the hook.
I’m listening to this come out of my teevee in a state of disbelief — he couldn’t possibly have said what I thought he said, did he? So he says it again:
CARVILLE: I can’t sit here. They’re run a completely false ad against Barack Obama and you say he’s out there talking about this. I mean, my point is, I really don’t think that senator McCain knows about this ad, and in my heart of hearts, I want to believe he’s an absolutely furious about this and somebody’s being called on the carpet because this ad is blatantly completely false.
This is beyond "off message." Does someone want to ask Carville what side he’s playing on?

About FDL Action
He’s playing on the 2012 side.
As good an explanation as any.
And Biden says “Palin’s great! Good speech, talented pol! Great!” and then follows up with “Maybe Hillary would have been the better VP pick for Obama” (acc. to a TPM header, though their link through to the story on CNN is busted).
And of course many such idiotic bumbles and fumbles on the Dem side could be multiplied ad almost infinitum.
I think this just really the way a lot of these supposed pros on our team think you play the game. A mental virus? I dunno. But it’s hardly unique to Carville.
Carville needs to go hang out with all of his other look-alike skeleton buddy Michael Chertoff. Both care about America First-TM more than the unbranded America some of us grew up in.
Some wag asked if Biden had told Obama that he was retiring after the D convention.
Yet another round of Darwin Awards for the Ds.
Actually, DrBB, Biden’s trying to set the bar as high as he can for Palin prior to the debates. If the bar’s kept too long and she crawls over it, she gets to “exceed expectations”.
What Biden’s doing is smart. What Carville’s doing is sabotage. “Too honorable” my ass.
This does not say a whole lot about McShames awareness. I guess they took his tv away as well as his cell phone. Oh well he still has his Ferragamos
Delusion as a coping technique.
Dead on. Carville seems to always play the game this way, and he’s always wrong. What I don’t understand is why he’s even being given a platform anymore. He’s competetely out of touch and, again, always wrong.
Carville is spearheading the Clinton 2012 campaign. They like their chances against President Palin.
So, it’s not like McKept doesn’t have any attention on him at this point. If he’s so outraged, JAAAAAMES, where is it? I haven’t heard “boo” about him being the least bit bothered by this piece of campaign k-wrap!
Naaaaa, he’s at home or wherever watching, drooling and wringing his fists anticipating a full on blow up at Obama by the mother’s and decent folk in the nation.
James, is it that the 70s were over good to you or what? Either support the democratic ticket and stop defending McSnapped or STFU!
skeleton looking loud mouthed ignorant AND ugly m(*#*& F(q98*#!!!!!
If Palin becomes president, there won’t be a 20012.
Carvilles wife probably said she’d cut him off if he didn’t say that.
You’re being too hard on poor James.
He’s simply repeating what was whispered in his ear the previous night by Typhoid Mary. Pillow talk; don’t you just love it?
2012
Is Carville somehow trying to say that if McCain doesn’t know what his own staff is doing, then how can he be trusted to know how to run the government?
Because, otherwise, I just don’t see how this “honorable man” schtick is gonna work for the Ds. McCain is utterly out of touch with mainstream America-THAT’S the message the Ds have to hammer home, day after day, through November 4th.
What both Biden and Carville are doing is smart.
Phoenix Woman is right – Biden’s not going to let Palin get away with an ankle-high bar going into their debate. She’s going to have to measure up and not merely show up. (BTW, I’d gamble that she finds an excuse not to show up — probably something to do with deploying the Alaska National Guard to handle an invented or created crisis.)
Carville is challenging McCain’s honor, leadership and competence. If the “sex ed” ad continues to run, Carville will then infer any or all of the following:
1. McCain is not running his own campaign – failure of leadership.
2. McCain is unaware of his own campaign’s actions – failure of competence.
3. McCain actually does approve the ad – and is without honor.
Ah Cruella and Skeletor DeCarville will be so broken hearted that there will be no one to listen to their rants and whines after 1/20/09.
McShame has seen the ads, and he’s pissed.
So pissed, in fact, that he pulled out his Remington typewriter and e-mailed his campaign to cease and desist!
Hi Jane, fine piece.
Carville is an ass.
He’ll say anything he has to say to make more money. McCain’s taxcuts are mighty appealing.
Earth to servers
Earth to servers
I guess McShame Is to honorable to realize that he has lies coming out of his mouth – Earth to McShame’s brain
I wish Carville could be trusted, but he can’t. He’s the one that let Matalin know they were challenging Florida. It’s all part of that incestuous DC culture that needs blowing up.
I’m hearing reports of massive caging efforts in Wisconsin and Florida. Registered Democrats are receiving absentee ballots from the McCain campaign and are told to send them to the return address enclosed. In Macomb County, MI the Republicans said they will be challenging all people who try and vote that have had foreclosure proceedings. Over 2,000 fall into this category in Macomb county. The Republican Party is blatantly trying to subvert democracy. When will these traitors be held accountable?
You’re nit picking. Cherry picking.
You’re clearly not looking at the totality of what Biden’s saying.
There’s a bigger picture, a bigger plan.
Why didn’t Carville say it that way, then? How can anyone that sleeps with Mary Maitlin be trusted?
Love the image!! Thanks
As to Skeletor DeCarville, I think this approach allows McBush to have his cake and eat it too.
I forget where I read about a section in one of Woodards ass licking books on Bush, that Skeletor called Cruella with a heads up on Kerrys intent to challenge votes during 2004. It makes more since that Cruella and Skeletor play both ends, but Skeletor’s really in bed with Cruella and the Dark Lord.
Does someone want to ask Carville what side he’s playing on?
No. Not me. Jane, why do you ask this? Do you have an interview with him, or are you merely inciting, again?
I think the troops are riled up enough, for today anyway.
Makes me wonder if they asked Biden to dial it down a little while they figure out how to deal with Diva Palin.
The key here is
“I’m John McCain and I approved this message.”
Either that is true, or he needs to evidence high volume outrage including firing, tarring and feathering the responsible party.
You cannot claim honor and integrity without owning your name.
Carville is on the side that gets him laid. If you take a good look at him, and then get a load of that sparkling personality, it isn’t hard to believe that betrayal of the party would be the going rate to get him laid.
Carville is irrelevant.
Mr and Mrs Matalin need to reevauuate their careers.
I suggest Disney.
They morph in and out of annimated caricatures with ease.
The only thing more horrible than seeing those two separately is seeing them together. Gad, for the sake of their kids I hope they were adopted.
Somehow, i don’t think he was as serious as it’s being made out to be. Biden has a gift for sarcasm, and he’s using it to keep the goal out of reach for Palin, because she sure as hell isn’t a Hillary. Hillary has her issues, but she’s by far a better woman than Palin by far.
I’m not sure where that quote came from, but did you watch the entire Biden interview on MTP?
He came out soft on Palin and then continued to nail it time and again on the issues.
I’m just having a hard time reading the comments here that go on and on about how nasty the media is for focusing on Sound Bites, and then I hear people here doing the exact same thing.
Eyes on the prize necessitates us looking at the whole thing.
Tired of BS sound bites here. Goose, gander. Same expectations.
Cheerleaders for the One Note Only Crowd?
yeah. furious. absolutely. i’m sure.
god.
My favorite reference to Carville is the episode of Family Guy in which Peter sees him and recoils in horror, “Whew, geeze, get that away! Did somebody open the Ark of the Covenant?”
McCain should be held liable because of his personal approval, that’s the whole point of that requirement. If he’s running such a rogue campaign that they’d use an “in the can” statement without his buy-in he’s still responsible for the lack of ethics in his organization.
But corporate media will let it slide, IOKIYAR. (I still remember how Dean was mocked for putting that in his commercial, being the first to follow the new campaign laws.)
From reading/seeing all this bullshit you just might get the impression that “The Fix Is In Place”. What else could account for namesy pansey crap coming from so many Dems?
I just wish just one prominent Democrat would say/tell like it is: “If John S. McCain hadn’t been shot down and captured he would have been swept into the dustbin of history as his sorry ass truly deserves for his self serving time as a “Servent of the People of Arizona”!
OT From Credo:
Carville knows what side he’s playing on; so does his wife: his own. He works on behalf of the Incumbents. Do the Democrats understand that isn’t them? Obviously not, or they wouldn’t allow him to keep calling himself a “Democratic” consultant, nor would they keep using him. But really, he’s just Rahm Emanuel with less hair.
In my opinion, there needs to be a whole lot of women politicians to come up behind her and hit her with a lot of stuff. They need to play the mean girls, now. Time to tell McPalin that, on the national stage, she is not allowed to hit the fainting couch every time someone says something mean to her, she is not allowed to get the vapors when someone calls her a name, she has to play by the same rules as the guys, this is not an all-girl team, and if she can’t complete without whining, she should get out of the game. She cannot take jabs at the boys and expect deference in return. Period! They should have done this already, and if the girls don’t do it, the guys and the press should! Now!
James Carville knows the value of a 2- or 3-day story. He can come back to it and put the hammer down. “Ah’m deeply disappointed to learn that McCain did in fact approve the slimy message; ah’m deeply saddened to see a formerly honorable man sink so low in his single-minded drive to become president. This story of a man trying to surpass the accomplishments of his father is really just a sad, sad repetition of what the nation had to go through with GWB. It’s a real shame for them, but mostly for the rest of us, that Bush and McCain didn’t seek therapy to deal with their shared sense of inadequacy and father envy.”
Or maybe he won’t say that. But I like it.
The Dems may think it’s kool to keep to the rhetorical device that John McSame is an honourable man, so are they all, all honourable men. But let’s face it. How many kids in 9th grade English, reading Julius Caesar, understood that line as sarcasm, as understatement necessary to avoid sharing Caesar’s fate, as ridicule of those who claimed that their political ambitions were more worthy and pure than Caesar’s?
This is not an election where the most effective jibes require explanation. How many defeats do the Democrats need for that home truth to sink in? Stop it. Grow up. Learn to fight. Do it. Or go home.
Let’s assume Carville is correct. Then McCain is out of contol of the publica face of his campaign. This is NOT simply some campaign aide getting caught in a gaffe…revealing what they really think. It shows a complete operation that created an ad, from conception- to production- to the financing to allow it to be broadcast. And McCain doesn’t KNOW?
He doesn’t apologize? He doesn’t retract? He doesn’t purge his team of media masseuses and strategists and funding allocators. And we don’t simply mean doing a “suspension” or putting them into another part of the campaign…a REAL PURGE…real FIRING! And not just the lowest on the totem-pole…since the running of the ad had to be approved at many levels. It carried John McCain’s imprimatur “I’m John McCain and I APPROVED THIS AD”.
If Carville is right…McCain didn’t know…then all of this should happen in two days! If McCain was complicit…well good ol’ Straight-Talker” was involved…and he can’t fire anyone because they would say “John Knew!”.
If John McCain were ever honorable, he’s long since given himself up to the expedient, the easy, the self-aggrandizing, the petulant way. Stop pretending it would be a shame to lose to him, or you will.
I would bet that Mary Matalin was involved in the production of the AD!
Not to mention this so-called honorable man has large numbers of those lobbyist critters in his campaign, and he’s running one of the most smarmy, low-down dirty campaigns of our times. Lying, cheating and stealing is rampant amongst his closest associates, his running mate, and he’s been caught at it himself before he learned the art of discretion. That’s not honorable; that’s more of the same. He learned from his past opponents, and he’s applying it now. Maybe that’s why he says he knows how to fight to win a war, because he’s sure never demonstrated that skill, or the one where he knows how to prevent any further attacks on our continent, either.
If you’re talking about the one he did at MTP with Brokaw, I agree with you. Thought he did a great job with getting the point across that as long as we’re all talking about extraneous stuff, she doesn’t have to and hasn’t expressed anything about her policies, the direction she would want to take the country, or anything substantial. And I’m personally very tired of watching her dodge interviews with tough questions. If she can’t give an impromptu interview without putting her foot in her mouth, that’s something the country needs to know too, so we’re gonna haveta keep prodding them and goading them with remarks about the Diva needing deference and her not being ready for prime time, or she’d be out there already.
re: Not ready for prime time.
Oh, man, that’s for sure! I think her place on this ticket has pushed many of us, I know for me that’s the case, over the edge.
I actually have nightmares about that woman and for the (what I perceive as EVIL) people lifting her as the cheerleader for a very narrow minded, cowardly group of elitist fraidypants. So, they are welcoming Armegeddon? Fine for them, but I wish they’d leave the rest of us to a future of our own divining.
What team is he on?
Probably Joe Biden’s team – the fierce attack dog of the Obama-Biden campaign had this to say about their rival recently:
Yes, they are inspiring America with their bi-partisanship this campaign season.
Surely the 22% of the populace that still do not despise Bush will appreciate how they are being catered to by the Senior Senator of Change and the Junior Senator of Change, and they are just the types that need to be won over.
Carville’s message would be even stronger if he did not so resemble something from the fiction of Anne Rice, however.
And Carville is bright and amusing….and maybe crazy. It’s like saying do you really believe your lying eyes? Ridiculous.
Oh come on, he’s sleeping with the enemy!
I’ve never understood why anyone would give this guy is a democratic consultant job description – he never was and never will be. He is a Clinton political consultant, through and through. He’s married to Mary Matlin for chrissakes. I don’t understand why anyone on a democratic ticket lacking Hillary Clinton would ever believe anything he might say would ever be in their best interest.
um, i dunno. i can actually see this playing well.
i mean, i don’t exactly love carville, and his allegiances are not at all clear in the larger picture.
but regardless of his true feelings and his intent, there is a way in which this can play against mccain, in that all these people are so shocked, SO shocked that his campaign would run something this base, this depraved, that they are forced to rethink the man, and his character.
that’s already begun. numerous pundits and columnists have hit the threshold and admitted that, gosh, maybe they never really knew the man after all.
this could actually be good because, (a) it suggests he’s been playing the media and everyone else all along, and (b) it puts him between a rock and a hard place. to whit: if he sticks by the ads, he’s trashed by yet more of these folks who finally see the light, and his love affair with the media is over, toast. but if he doesn’t stick by them, and denounces them, he’ll be forced to clean up his act and maintain clean campaigning from here on out.
which will also be his death, because that is all they have right now, folks, trash. trash and lies. there is nothing else.
maybe carville knows all this, more likely he doesn’t. but let him rant and rave. i can see only good coming from it for obama, and only bad for mccain, who brought it all on himself anyway.
But John McCain is an honorable man. And besides Obama used the word, lipstick, which, like the phrase Prisoner of War, is the copyrighted brand name for his campaign. Let’s go invade Russia–Napolean and Hitler did very well there.
