On Sunday, McClatchy chronicled some of John McCain’s most notorious temper tantrums:
There’s a lengthy list of similar outbursts through the years: McCain pushing a woman in a wheelchair, trying to get an Arizona Republican aide fired from three different jobs, berating a young GOP activist on the night of his own 1986 Senate election and many more.
McCain observers say the incidents have been blown out of proportion.
Yeah, a senator pushes just one woman in a wheelchair and suddenly it’s a big deal.
Tom Harkin has the best line in the McClatchy story:
"Look, around here, people lose their tempers once in a while. But it doesn’t happen very often, and it usually happens in some contextual framework. A lot of times there’s just not much of a contextual framework for his blowing up."
More on the wheelchair incident:
Six people present have written statements describing what they saw. According to the accounts, McCain waved his hand to shoo away Jeannette Jenkins, whose cousin was last seen in South Vietnam in 1970, causing her to hit a wall.
As McCain continued walking, Jane Duke Gaylor, the mother of another missing serviceman, approached the senator. Gaylor, in a wheelchair equipped with portable oxygen, stretched her arms toward McCain.
"McCain stopped, glared at her, raised his left arm ready to strike her, composed himself and pushed the wheelchair away from him," according to Eleanor Apodaca, the sister of an Air Force captain missing since 1967.
McCain’s staff wouldn’t respond to requests for comment about specific incidents.
Digby has more on the potential implications of McCain’s mean streak.

Thanks Lindsay.

But damn, Lindsey… he was a POW!™ and didn’t have a kitchen table in the Hanoi Hilton…
Clearly they didn’t teach anger management in Hanoi… seemingly, they didn’t at the Naval Academy either.
John McCain – He’s hell on wheels
Obi is on Olbermann right now. I’m lovin that whole recipe!
McSame is NOT A LOOSE cannon he is a LOOSE H-BOMB…….sick puppy
I am sorry, Lindsey. To be off topic, and did so cause that’s happenin’ RIGHT NOW.
Thank you for alllll your hard work during the rethug gathering.
You have just ROCKED throughout!
Thank YOU!
KO is asking some really good questions of Obama… and Obama is dancing around like a fucking gazelle, not answering, just smiling and giving platitudes.
He’s gonna get smacked around in the debates if he does this… he needs pithy, SIMPLE, well-thought out answers not fucking stump-speech points.
(paraphrasing)
KO: Why don’t you call them out as liars?
Obama: blah blah blah blah *stump speech points* blah blah blah blah
PTSD to the max….wonder how many meds he takes per day…of course watching the Mrs…at the convention she looked totally drugged, prolly steals his
KO is asking some really good questions of Obama… and Obama is dancing around like a fucking gazelle, not answering, just smiling and giving platitudes.
he sounds terrible…get real BARRAK
“John McCain will make Dick Cheney look like Gandhi.” – Pat Buchanan.
He’s gonna get smacked around in the debates if he does this… he needs pithy, SIMPLE, well-thought out answers not fucking stump-speech points.
YUP, and joe sixpack will not understand a freakin word he says
Come on Jo, you know goddamn well Barak is not going to call Mc Cain a liar at this point in the campaign.
KEITH nails it
are you better off today etc
Barack would do well to listen to KO’s “hints” – because that is what Olbermann is doing, as much if not more than interviewing him….
why not ,just say reckless regard for THE TRUTH …me likey the word
RECKLESS
John McCain was unable to attack disabled women in wheelchairs for 5 years.
-G
I was just thinking he’d shortened his message down to some slogans that he just mentioned…wages going down..unemployment…gas going up..faith in the American people…
Ditto. Thanks for being so brave, Lindsay.
That was Kerry’s mistake in ‘04. He failed to get up on a crate on the Capitol Mall and say “Liars!”
As long as he doesn’t explicitly call them out, the longer the lying, slander, obfuscation and working the “media refs” goes on (and on and on and on)
ok, I’ll let him know when I brief him
BWAHAHAAHAHAHahahahahahaha
or twist Cindys arm and call her TROLLOP
touche
hahahaahahahahahahaha
omg
Obama would do well to spend the time and LISTEN to KO’s special comments alltogether.
IN FACT!,
Obama will preface his weak attacks by stating: “John McCain is an honorable man….but his ads stretch the truth.”
Honorable men don’t stretch the truth.
Stop shoring up McCain’s bonafides for God sake.
-G
Obama is acting like he’s been paid to throw a fight.
if it were me …i would go find this guy ASAP
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjFrezxIMAQ
I thought he made his point twice. If you think you’re better off in the last eight years, vote for McCane. If you think we need to make fundamental changes in the direction our country takes, I think you should vote for me.
If they can’t understand that, they ain’t voting at all.
IN FACT!, Obama would do VERY WELL to actually COME TO FDL and read, type, talk, listen and LEARN!
just sayin…….
Add on to the list: On Larry King LIve last week, Michael Dukakis, with his inimitable chuckle and thick eyebrows said he experienced it firsthand. He went with Gov. Tommy THompson (who the Duke liked) to discuss mass transit with Grumpy and McSame ran the two of them out of the office.
I still see Jon Lovitz every time Gov. Dukakis comes on…
Take a look at this:
September 2007: McCain voted against the Webb amendment calling for adequate troop rest between deployments.
May 2006: McCain voted against an amendment that would provide $20 million to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for health care facilities.
April 2006: McCain was one of only 13 Senators to vote against $430,000,000 for the Department of Veteran Affairs for Medical Services for outpatient care and treatment for veterans.
March 2006: McCain voted against increasing Veterans medical services funding by $1.5 billion in FY 2007 to be paid for by closing corporate tax loopholes.
March 2004: McCain once again voted for abusive tax loopholes over veterans when he voted against creating a reserve fund to allow for an increase in Veterans’ medical care by $1.8 billion by eliminating abusive tax loopholes. Jeez, McCain really loves those tax loopholes for corporations, since he voted for them over our veterans’ needs.
October 2003: McCain voted to table an amendment by Senator Dodd that called for an additional $322,000,000 for safety equipment for United States forces in Iraq and to reduce the amount provided for reconstruction in Iraq by $322,000,000.
April 2003: McCain urged other Senate members to table a vote (which never passed) to provide more than $1 billion for National Guard and Reserve equipment in Iraq related to a shortage of helmets, tents, bullet-proof inserts, and tactical vests.
August 2001: McCain voted against increasing the amount available for medical care for veterans by $650,000,000. To his credit, he also voted against the 2001 Bush tax cuts, which he now supports making permanent, despite the dire financial condition this country is in, and despite the fact that he indicated in 2001 that these tax cuts unfairly benefited the very wealthy at the expense of the middle class.
that i like, but he needs to stop the MALCOLM MILDFELLOW imo
McCain’s a hothead, and Palin would not be a check on that impulse at all – quite the opposite in fact.
Both mcSame and his Trophy have been described as not able to tolerate criticism. So I’m wondering how long it’s going to take before these two have a falling out! If she is unable to speak about policy – even other countries – with any fluency… will McCain blow a gasket?
She may be able to memorize facts between now and the VP debate. But you can’t memorize “reasoning” – and that’s what underlies policy. If you look at how cognitive expertise develops… it sure doesn’t happen that fast! Takes years and years. She may be a pitbull – but this is not a dog fight we’re talking. Dogs cannot talk their way out of a dogfight!
Senator Obama may keep this up . . .what if he’s holding back for the debates, not providing them with any ‘tells’ ?
- pls recall how specific and new much of his Invesco speech was
with the conventions now over it is a new ballgame, but the Obama campaign has consistently held powerful cards close to the vest laying them down at the optimal moment
or of course, I could be full of it
I was just thinking he’d shortened his message….
I was thinking the same thing.
I caught bits and pieces from last week’s speech from Terre Haute, IN, and I was struck by the simpler language, shorter and more blunt attacks, etc.
That being said, he’s got a ways to go.
Obama should say NO she is not qualified
yea mebbe
Mike Dukakis ladies and gentlemen.
KO asks about a blatantly racist attack on his wife and Obama runs into a spiel about how decent the American people are and how they are tired of attacks.
I am losing my fucking mind this week.
The man who was going to be a tough Chicago street brawler looks like he’s ready to get into a slap fight with a ninja.
-G
Yea, he could come on and listen to people tell him that they won’t vote for him because he won’t say what they want him to say.
I think that’s pretty correct Loo Hoo.
I don’t know how he could make it more simple!
Every time he has to repeat the simple, basic message, I ALWAYS THINK,
we really badly NEED to do something about the base education of Americans!
the “school system”. If this campaign and the past 8 years isn’t an example of America’s poor educational system, I don’t know what is!
I think Obama is treating McCain and Palin like kids that think they are being all tough and fighting you, while you place your long adult arm and hand on their foreheads as they flail in their temper tantrums while you look on with a smile at their childish outbursts. Palin and McCain rely on sarcastic, backdoor insults..high school mentality.
Obama is the adult.
Obama is acting like he’s been paid to throw a fight.
ah, *that’s* why Harry Reid is Majority Leader. Harry doesn’t even appear to be acting.
true dat
however American public= high schoolers imo…hope im wrong,i love the guy, reminds me of my phi beta kappa dad
oy
couldn’t even believe this article, it’s so creepy and out there. But in fact, Palin was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska from 1996 to 2002. And according to an Alaskan news article in the local Wasilla paper in the year 2000, the City of Wasilla, under Mayor Palin, charged rape victims for their own forensic tests. Most Alaskan municipalities picked up the tab themselves, but not Wasilla, the article notes. You see, the city of Wasilla, the article notes, didn’t want to “burden” taxpayers with having to support victims of rape. Yes, they were more interested in lowering taxes. It would have cost the city between $5,000 and $14,000 a year to pay for the rape victims’ police medical exams. And if the City of Wasillay, circa the year 2000, wants to go there in terms of balancing rape vs, burdening taxpayers, you should know that each and every Alaskan gets a check from the state government each year, it contains their portion of that year’s oil revenues. The latest check, I read, was for over $2,000. I think the citizens of Wasilla had the money.
I watched too. Not good. KO was throwing soft balls and BO was whiffing them. “Is Palin ready”….”I’ll let you ask her that” WTF???
He needs coaching. And fast.
Yea, most harvard law school grads need our advice on how to speak.
yup …is a governor for less than a year, ready to jump into INTERNATIONAL politics while 2 wars are going………NO
Exactly. Why didn’t he?
The one thing Obama cannot do is appear “defensive”…whoever starts getting defensive will lose. Right now, he is on a mild, steady offense…he’s been addressing everything as it comes up and throwing it back in their laps with facts. He needs to get McCain and Palin into defensive mode by eroding their credibility…over and over. He will pick his battles…later, when it is closer, and he’ll go for a knock-out. Obama is streetwise not scrappy like McCain and Palin. Don’t underestimate him.
i wish he would act more like a lawyer……jury instructions,if said witness lies about one thing,YOU can DISREGARD all their testimony
Maybe he needs some boxing lessons then.
-G
Don’t give the skank anymore ammo to fight about who she is. It ain’t about her.
That kinda tells a story that should become an Obama commercial, doesn’t it?
That is exactly what he is doing.
yah, that makes sense…sort of rope a dope….McDummy being the dope
I used to box oranges in Florida
Obama needs to work on the “uhs”.
true she might cry
I love that description. LOL Heh.
okay ill chill
I think he may have been a stutterer to some degree…I’ve noticed it too, but I think it buys him breath…
That’s what we called the girls with beehives in my highs school. . .for the 3 years I was there anyway.
Raven, I don’t know if that was snark or not. But, ya gotta remember that Obama has to speak to those who aren’t Valley Girls or Ravens. I really do think that he needs to learn to cut to the chase. Tactics. xxoo
aiggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeee,that voice
You know what they say…
Short Fuse, Short…
well, you get the picture (eww..) No wonder Sindy had to start stealing drugs from a non-profit. She probably hasn’t been satisfied for decades.
McInsane: Leader of the cocktail weenie-ists…in more ways than one.
Hahahaha…it’s one of my favorite insult words…it sounds like what it is describing somehow…cross between nevermind…
And all over the threads are comments that he is dong just that.
hey – in here’s an Obama ad which contains a brand new word for him – see if you can spot it:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..24924.html
did it get your juices flowin?
It just started to distract me. Does it sound indecisive to you?
ding
Blackboard. Fingernails.
???
Okay, thanks. I am glad that is the case. Some of the comments here about the KO thing did make me wonder. And, if you read previous thread, you’ll see I left you a note.
If Rachel’s new show interferes with Bochco’s new show…
Rachel wins!
I first noticed it a long time ago, but I’ve known a few people who control their language that way…indecisive no not at all…he’s not indecisive, but he measures his words, and it makes me nervous when he has that hesitation, because I think he’ll be perceived as indecisive. He knows what he’s talking about though. He doesn’t do it when he’s giving a speech, only when he’s speaking off the cuff, which is why I think it is a stuttering thing from the past possibly…or just a focus on specific words.
Olbermann may well be in the course of setting a new record for the use of the word ”LIE” in a one-hour broadcast.
But I’m, not sure.
I’ll have the staff check….
OMG. Is that in the Digby article? (Haven’t read it yet.) That is so important for women to know. For everyone to know!
I am losing my fucking mind this week.
As someone said in an earlier thread……… get in line.
Maybe should amend that to read: the line forms to the left.
Good to see you LS. Have you been absent?
WWD in da house too!
link please
Hiya, I’ve been in and out…lurking…doing other stuff..and following the approaching hurricane on a cool website, because it looks like it’s coming our way (I’m a weather fanatic..) *g*
He’s thinking every word will be analyzed, which it will. He’s got great teeth too! I think he looked beat, though.
That is a really important story.
he does just that in his OReilly interview
Right. That is probably the logical reason. He knows every single word is important and will be used against him if possible.
as someone who is familiar with high blood pressure[i.e., hypertension], these “from out of the blue” temper tantrums would seem to indicate that john mccain has high blood pressure.
meds may or not ameliorate it. and of course, there is the problem with most hypertensive males: they avoid taking their meds. principally because those meds prevent “erections”.
the temper tantrums that have been revealed would seem to be classic indicators of uncontrolled high blood pressure. if this is true, you don’t want this guy anywhere close to running the usa.
forgot about your inner meterologist
are we supposed to get hit ?
as Mose said
I know that I don’t want him or Palin anywhere near the “football”, the “red phone”, or the “button”.
I’m seriously not ready for Armageddon by any definition.
uh, are you telling me to shut up?
VG, not at all, I was being snarky about the last thread!
Looks that way. They are saying Galveston to Matagorda…(that is the target right now). That could bring rain and more up our (and your) way. Apparently, people in Houston, who could get a head on hit are not wanting to evacuate, because of the nightmare Rita evacuation… It could swing way west into Mexico or way east up into Alabama… It could hit NOLA…or other parts of LA..where there is no electricity, and gas stations don’t work.
Don’t know yet.
Yay, Rachel!!!
Keith the guest!
oh and it’s even worse than initially reported – they charged these survivors IN DEFIANCE of an existing state law
Whew! Thanks. It’s been really humid down here.
See if you like this one better
LS gave me this link a while back. You have to zoom out to see TX

Bonnie Raitt – Everybody’s Crying Mercy
In the primary we saw Hillary’s lead gradually wither and disappear.
Now Obama is seeing the same thing, but he still has state-by-state advantages.
So, he has to keep up the direct opposition to McCain to prevent further national poll decline and yet he has to prepare for the debates AND somehow win the state-by-state electoral fight.
What’s the strategy for all that?
I think they get it except his ‘direct opposition’ doesn’t seem so much like opposition (at times) as hedging and evasion. He needs to be a bit more straight-forward, brief, direct, but not mean, nasty or into that territory. It has to be matter-of-fact, brief, direct opposition to McCain with an occasional direct contradiction.
McCain has voted along with Bush’s plans 90% or more of the time!
Ms. Palin was in full support of the Bridge to Nowhere when it was being considered.
McCain’s peers have testified to John’s temper and they doubt he should be president because of it.
Honest, simple, direct and still showing opposition and contradicting McCain-Palin’s record and claims.
cbl2 here too! Hello.
Here’s my new favorite one too:
http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewforum.php?f=59
Yea, it’s really hard to find a vid of Mose doing it.
ty! bookmarked.
Lindsay, thanks for this wonderful post. McCaint is a hot-tempered, cranky, hair-trigger lunatic who is unfit for the Presidency. I wish more of the Democratic caucus would talk about their experience with him.
I wanted to thank you for your terrific coverage of BOTH conventions the past two weeks, Lindsay. Your photos in Denver brought us a gathering no one else showed, and your on-the-scene reports from the St Paul police riot were invaluable.
It’s great to have you on the team.
Yes, Lindsay! Your coverage of this has been wonderful.
Sorry I got distracted by the bright shiny objects!
I still remember meeting you in CT!

Hey, did you ever see the movie “Kiss of Death” with Richard Widmark? He pushes the wheelchair-bound old lady down the stairs. I want McCain’s autograph now!
Here’s a 4 minute clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHHJsXH3BiU
That’s an incredible photo (mccaingryus1.jpg).
Is it one of yours, Lindsay?
Do you know the story behind it?
