Police detained hundreds demonstrators on the final night of the Republican National Convention in St. Paul. Approximately 250 people were arrested shortly before John McCain took to the stage to accept the presidential nomination. That’s in addition to the 422 people who had already been arrested earlier in the week.
Riot police held approximate 300 people, including journalists and observers for nearly an hour on an overpass spanning Interstate 94. Police instructed the crowd to get on the bridge, then announced that everyone on the bridge was under arrest.
The Joint Information Center offered conflicting accounts about the status of the assembly permits for last night’s gatherings. When I called at 4pm, a spokesman told me that the organizers of the March were slated to march from the capitol, through downtown, around the xCel Center and back to the capitol and that the protest was set to go until 7pm.
By 5pm, CNN was reporting that the cops on the ground were telling protesters that their permit had expired. According to some reports, Sheriff Bob Fletcher announced that he was rescinding permits at news conference late Thursday afternoon, but when I called to confirm, the Joint Information Center told me that no permits had been revoked.
Journalist Paul Demko was briefly arrested and flex cuffed on the bridge. By Thursday, the police had learned that it’s bad PR to arrest journalists and protest observers along with demonstrators. Mind you, they still cuffed them, but they segregated them and let them go early.
According to one theory, the group on the bridge was a breakaway from a separate gathering, which was not permitted to march through downtown–hence the arrests on the bridge.
Police used tear gas, concussion grenades and pepper spray to control the crowd.
The RNC took out a $10 million insurance policy to pay off police brutality settlements. This is the first time party host committee agreed to take out such a policy. I wonder how high their deductible is.

About FDL Action
Great coverage Lindsay. I’m a fan.
I’d like to know wich insurance company was dumb enough to issue such a contract. Sounds like a lose-lose situation.
10 million isn’t going to be enough.
Political Radar, an ABC News blog, posted a report that states the following:
Insurance premiums may be much higher next time.
I see some Supreme Court cases in the future over these preemtive arrests.
They got $10 million in insurance? Then we sue for $100 million. Perhaps all six hundred or so should each sue for $100 million.
This is absolutely ridiculous. There simply must be some accountability in this country.
Perhaps cases that will bring pause to a number of legislative tidbits Bush demanded.
an insurance policy?
what a bunch of lowbrow mutha fuckas
they had this planned all along!
just add this to the list of offenses that will need to be investigated.
Obama’s justice department sure will be busy1
Over 750 detained/arrested. A brutal and over-the-top police response. Pre-emptive raids based on informant info (thought police). Percussion grenades, battons and tear gas for kids mis-behaving. Mass arrests after herding by stormtroopers. Press silenced and blinded. Welcome to the new Amerika.
Was anyone dissappeared? Would we ever know?
Was anyone rendered to another place for “special treatment?”
Nobody was waterboarded
as far as we know, but some were clearly tortured by pepper-spray.No more first amendment, no more 4th amendment. Military turned onto citizens exercising their basic rights…..
Thank you democrat legislators for making this possible by passing everything tyrant Bush wanted. History will remember that the fall of the U.S. began with the great Democrat rollovers of 2007-2008.
The founding fathers set up frequent elections of leaders and a checks-and-balance government system to prevent armed changes of leadership. When those mechanisms are subverted (vote tampering, congress’ lack of oversight) what is left?
The RNC response is very bad, as precursor to the near future, and they seem to be getting away with it.
Lindsey, I appreciate the clarity of your writing.
It sounds to me that the numbers of protesters were even larger that the ones detained, given the fact that McCain was interrupted numerous times by protesters during his speech.
Got to love those GOP robots shouting USA, when they have no concept of what the First Amendment is all about.
brief Interview with Adam Kokesh, the Marine who protested McCain
In the final analysis, it will be the recession and a need for change that voters choose a President on. The price of gas, food ahd heating our homes along with our family members that have lost jobs will be the deciding factor not to allow the party that put us in this predictment while spending billions of dollars for 2 wars when America is hurting so much.

This should come as a surprise to no one after the 2004 RNC:
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2…..-a19.shtml
The calculated strike against I-Witness video was an obvious attempt to curtail the amount of video material available in the eventual law suits.
And, just like in 2004, the MSM reporting of these occurrences is wholly separated from the events of the RNC, itself. It is as if these two events occurred in two different worlds, and the corporate media is in cahoots with the establishment to keep it that way, of course!
It is only through brave independent reporting like Lindsay, Amy Goodman, I-Witness, theUptake.org…etc, that these abuses of power are brought to light.
Still, who remembers 2004?
If I did not live in Minneapolis, I would have little more knowledge of this than a passing disgust elicited from reading Lindsay’s reporting.
I have a shallow hope that a local congressman, Keith Ellison, will actually see through some of the congressional inquiry into this matter but, in all honesty, I suspect he will be crushed beneath the wheel.
The blogosphere has far to go before it can truly leap out of the realm of cyber space and effect change in the real world. If their were a virtual reality means for physically kicking people in the ass, then I’d have a more positive outlook.
Kirk gave the numbers. Call if you can get through the recordings. I’ll call again in a week or so, but you know the St. Paul police are just in heavy damage control and PR mode. Maybe the good people of Minnesota won’t be as forgetful of these events as the folks in the faster pace Metropolis of 2004, but I doubt it.
It is the doom of humans that they forget.
Analysis of violation of constitutional rights during the national political party conventions—here’s hoping there will be a lot of analysis and investigation—should not downplay the fact that the law enforcement strategies were consistent with and in considerable part empowered by national (“homeland”) security programs that rely upon and create domestic intelligence.
We’re seeing the smiley face of our purported protectors.
1,755 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Linsay Beyerstein and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Thanks for another great post…you have been rock solid for information this week. Now that things have played out and the fascists have 4-5 folks to present to court under Homeland Security-Patriot Act charges, what do you think were the goals of the krypto-Nazis for this week and did they achieve what they wanted? How do ya think that the mini police riots on Monday and Thursday evenings are gunna play in Minnesota? In my opinion, they screwed the pooch for Norm Coleman. What have you heard about the costs to the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul…were they pre-paid with federal Homeland Security monies?
Thanks again…you get another citation on yer Norske Citizenship Medal.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!!
Bad as it was, the R’s did not get what they wanted. They were hoping to instigate mass rioting that could be blamed on Democrats=Radicals=Blacks=Obama.
On the matter of Civil Rights, there should be many lawsuits. Anyone that suffered permanent injuries as a result of Police Brutality should sue the Republican Party and John McCain.
an insurance policy?
what a bunch of lowbrow mutha fuckas
they had this planned all along!
Yes, it *is* an implicit admission, isn’t it?
unfortunately, the existence of an insurance policy is inadmissible as evidence at trial.
Citizen yonodeler:
“We’re seeing the smiley face of our puported protectors.”
I think it’s called “Friendly Fascism”.
They can take their Patriot Act and cram it!!
If that’s the only good to come out of this disgusting series of events, so be it. Contribute to Al Franken and kick Normy to the curb:
http://www.alfranken.com/page/…..LvyX/VEsE/
Sheriff Bob has his sights (pun intended) on much bigger things. Chief of
FatherlandHomeland Security sounds good to start. I bet he looks good in a brown shirtThey can take their Patriot Act and cram it!!
I think they already did that.
To *us*.
The goings on at the RNC remind me of the spring of 1970, I know I’m old, except this time there is Lindsay.
The only way to stop this kind of abuse is to expose it to the public.
Most people dont even know this goes on they see a few seconds of video and thats it
people just assume these protesters are just the lunatic fringe they dont see this as a major violation of rights
it took the death of a young woman at Kent State to catch the publics attention and create the necessary outrage!
they spent $10 million in pre production costs. . .a mere down payment enabling them to unleash $57 million on what as Hackworth notes above at 16, the Heaven’s Gate of political theatre –
ironic as shit their shiny new attack dog Palin stole the spotlight from all that “anarchy” wrought by the godless left obamabots
Amy Goodman and her coworkers have some good video evidence of the brutality inflicted on them. They could initiate a lawsuit. Physical and psychological trauma did occur.
It’s a matter for the courts to decide as to the permanence of the residual and ongoing effects of their trauma. It is not healthy for anyone to be molested, pushed and pulled, limbs twisted and bodies stepped on. It is easy to sustain permanent injuries from such rough treatment.
Has Donna Brazile made any public comments re: her pepper spray ordeal?
Citizen JayBur:
“Sheriff Bob has his sights (pun intended) on much bigger things…”
I might remind you of another St. Paul politician who put his future in the hands of the fascists and gave George W. Clusterfuck a big hug in public…Randy Kelly (a Joe Lik*derman Democrat)lost his mayoral re-election bid to Chris Coleman, he got buried, in fact, after he hugged the Chimpenfuehrer in public and kicked the Democratic Party in the slats.
Like I say…the fascists screwed the pooch for their favorite circus clown Senator.
Regarding the protests, was there any proof that Rove sent in some of his own “activists” to keep things stirred up, break some windows, and make those damn Lefties look bad?
There is absolutely nothing patriotic about pepper-spraying an innocent, law-abiding citizen, much less cuffing and detaining a journalist, or deliberately ramming a 1200 lb horse into an innocent person on public property.
There had BETTER be charges and investigations.
Did someone give orders to do these despicable, illegal things.
Was security for this farcical convention outsourced to some private gang of thugs, or was it just Blkwtr-esque goons creating inspirational training videos?
Inquiring minds would like to know.
When, exactly, did we lose our country?
oh and p.s. -
this may have already been covered in prev posts, but I sure would like to these the provenance of that $57 mil. no, not DHS Joe committee, I’d be willing to bet there are some vendor specific strings attached to the allocation. are we gonna find out some crony rec’d $30 million of it for “training and field support” and the ol Sheriff Bob had to settle for the crumbs ?
Great work, Lindsay.
OT – sorry.
MSNBC now running a text-message poll – “What do You Feel McCain’s Speech Accomplished The Most?”
Four choices are given, all of which are positive answers (reminds me of Colbert’s “A Great President, or The Greatest President?”)
There is no “Not a Goddamned Thing” choice.
crap.
Like The Brooks Brothers Riots of Miami in 2000, I guarantee that Rove did exactly as you say. It is known that subversives enjoined the various protest groups and worked as informants.
Sheriff Bob will happily take the crumbs because he got something much more valuable, National Exposure.
one more question -
some striking similarities to the War On Drugs®
in most states, regional task forces dictated that evidence given by law enforcement (public or private) did not have to be corroborated (Tulia, Txas, anyone ?)
just wondering if it will be the same here.
refuse to accept their terms.
improvise. ;->
Some of the dread of being booked these days is due to the generation and sharing of the arrest record that results and to the high likelihood of being listed. Arresting and booking persons who are simply exercising First Amendment rights can serve as a strong deterrent to exercising those rights.
two words for that clown:
“America’s Sheriff”
the dustbin of history is filled with these flecks
Anyone and everyone who was detained or questioned in any way during this mess ought to make sure their name has not been “accidentally-on-purpose” purged from voting rolls.
No. I’m not kidding. Worse things have already been done in previous years.
No. More. Stolen. Elections.!!!
My daughter was there last night and said that they physically split the crowd arbitrarily driving half onto the bridge (and arresting them) and the others off the bridge and allowing them to leave. She stated that a cop was shoving her roughly but she told him to knock it off your a whole helluva a lot bigger than I am and then he reduced his force to “guiding” her off the bridge. She was with two friends (all grad students) – the male was pushed onto the bridge and she and another female were pushed off of it. Their male friend was arrested. She also suspected that there was at least one planted police instigator (though unsuccessful) in the crowd. While his clothing looked like that of other protesters, his boots were clearly law enforcement issue.
Sorry but “America’s Sheriff” has already been taken by Mike Corona of Orange County California. You might be able to buy the rights from him, though, he’s under federal indictment on corruption charges.
Fascists have a keen sense of boot style…
Chilling!
These sorts of stories should be gathered up and published widely.
These sorts of stories should be gathered up and published widely.
“Should be” being the operative words, unfortunately.
Sorry, no room for those downer stories. Coming up an in depth, hard hitting expose on how Sarah choose the name “Twig”
What bothers me the worst is the near total lack of broadcast media coverage. CNN had a small spot and Democracy Now has it covered fully, but as someone who is forced (I don’t control the remote)to watch ABC news, I haven’t seen a single second about this.
“friendly fascism”? I’m not so sure about the friendly. Every time I heard the chants of “USA! USA1″ it sounded to me like “America Uber Alles” – not such a friendly feeling at all.
Lindsay, thank you for witnessing Truth to Power!
The Goopers are calling Protestors “anarchists” on purpose.
“Anarchist” is the opposite of Monarchist, and has the added ‘benefit’ from their point of view of being phonetically suggestive of “anti-christ.”
But, the key to their distinction is in the contrast with ‘Monarchy.’
One thing that is Rarely associated with Monarchy is Leadership. It’s not the nature of the beast – in a Monarchy, the power-structure is fixed, so the actual practices of a Monarchy are about Control, and not Leading anyone anywhere. Something the Founders knew All Too Well…
What you brave folks experienced at the RNC was the Goons of the Monarchy strong-arming US, in order to Maintain the Status Quo of Their “Do as I say, Not as I do” Control.
It takes Great Courage to wade into a Court of Hypocrits, who can Barely Conceal their Craven Self-Interest, and are willing to Beat Down Truth-tellers who would Dare Expose Their “Me and Not You” Agenda – by Telling the Truth.
They don’t want to give up the Fairy Tale that America is thier Country, and Only their Country, and that Our Leader is the Unitary Executive in all his unquestionable entitlement as the embodiment of themselves.
Brava! Good on you! And Good on All who Peacefully raised their voice in Dissent against the Bush/McCain Abuse of Power – their exercise of Excluding the Rest of US from their care and concern, solely because We aren’t Like Them and won’t Blindly Toe-the-Line, needs to be Called Out for What It Is – a hidden and contrived Faux-Monarchy sloppily disguised with the veneer of Hollow Words, that Rewards Loyalty above Principle, while being enforced with Hateful “With us/against us” Prejudice.
Thanks to all the Protesters for Peacefully standing in front of the Tank in Gooper Square!
It’s worth more than a thousand Gooper words!
When I hear the word “anarchist” I get very angry at the thought that the Goopers are calling ME an anarchist because I disagree with them. I’m still a “real american”. I’m a citizen. I vote. FU Rove.
Yes, the second amendment has been abused. By the people that wouldn’t allow McCain to speak ! Good grief. What is ironic is that the far left is denying someone their free speech rights….wow.
So, just because you have car insurance you intend to get into an accident?
Come on now, I agree they were overtly aggressive, but having insurance to protect themselves against the numerous lawsuits (which are bound to happen) should not lead you to conclude that they are intentionally brutalizing citizens.
Pretty hard to determine who the bad guys are when the cowards wear masks…and other means to cover their identity. Seems to me that when a bunch of jerks start turning over dumpsters, breaking out store windows, and threatenting delagates with bodily harm, anything goes to stop the terrorism.
Lindsay thanks for all you work on this story this week!
I’m pretty sure similar arrangements were made by the host committee in Philly and NYC (RNC 2000 and 2004) and probably for the DNCs as well.
I’ve been told that NYC didn’t *use* their insurance to pay out the settlements post-convention, but I have not researched it.
The only violence against people was from the police.
Those who were preemtively arrested (and are now charged with “terrorism”) had done nothing illegal at all.
The amount of vandalism didn’t even come close to what happens when the University of Minnesota wins a hockey tournament. That’s a riot.
The people who were hiding their identities were the ones with the mace, pepperspray, the clubs, the “batons”, the zip-ties, the explosive projectile launchers, the rifles, the side arms, the helmets, the visors, the tear gas, the smoke grenades, the body armor… get the picture?
Who’s the terrorist?
Who’;s the terrorist? The people that created the situation. They are the terrorists.
