Lindsay has called in the following – at the corner of 7th and Wabash, a group of at least 100 riot police have gathered – one of whom used his horse to push her off a median on 7th between Wabash and St. Peter rather than just asking her to move. No demonstrators in sight yet but ….Riot cops shut down the Rage Against the Machine concert so Rage led several hundred people into the streets to join the Poor People’s March which is heading towards the Xcel Center and the RNC. The Poor People’s March has already been teargassed once.
There are now reports of tear gas being used near the area where Lindsay is calling from. She’s with a group of folks who are not part of the march and they are all just trying to figure out what all these cops intend. And she just heard two to three really loud explosions and tear gas is heading her way.
Update from Lindsay: 6:32 Pacific: 30-40 cops going up Wabash towards capitol on bikes and now horses heading fast along 7th.
ColdSnapLegal: reports the following was just on the Police scanner "Police are blocking 10th, 11th and St Peter and saying they are "going in for the kill because we are sick of this shit."
Along with the actions on the street, there are also a number of reports of mistreatment of those being held in the jail – a protester who is anemic and has passed out and was refused medical care, 15 others went on hunger strike to demand medical care for those who need it and there’s a report that one protestor being held has been pepper sprayed “all over her body” and is not being allowed to wash it off and now has 1st degree burns. We’ll be getting contact information so folks can call and demand medical care for any in need.
Thanks to Doc Murphy, the contact numbers to use are:
St. Paul Mayor, Chris Coleman: 651.266.8510
Ramsey County Sherriff, Bob Fletcher: 651.266.8500Complaint Number for the jail: 651-266-8989
Lindsay just called in – things are calming down where she is and she’s getting off the streets now. She should have great photos for us tomorrow!

About FDL Action
WTF for…?
wtf.
cops are sick of what shit? people being people? people expecting to be able to behave like they live in a free country.
oh wait…..
Who needs Blackwater when we’ve got the f**ckin’ Twin cities police behaving this way?
Who says they are blackwater, too? could be.
This is the work of the administration. They want another Chicago, so the public will turn against the Dems. Despicable.
This is how the GOP WANTS RNCs to run. The 2004 RNC in New York city ran the same way:
“Hundreds of groups organized protests, including United for Peace and Justice, a coalition of more than 800 anti-war and social justice groups, and International ANSWER. Over 1800 individuals were arrested by the authorities, a record for a political convention in the U.S. [1] However 90% of those charges were eventually dropped.[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Republican_National_Convention_protest_activity
Actually there is no reporting on this and there will be no reporting on this on the TV.
Note this:
“…the angry Left…”
Bush…President?
That would be a very odd statement for the President of the United States even at a convention.
Note also that Bush could not show up at the convention since it was real soldiers only.
That figure did not include the 6000 bikers who were arrested during a Critical mass ride.
Oh Fred’s up, I guess its hack actors night instead.
Watch how the media tries to paint Bush 41 as great. Also extra points if they tie him to George McCain as being a Bush 41 guy, which really is a lie.
HAHAHAH Freddy is going for the “mental recession”; Nixon was right what a f’in dunce.
I can feel the Fredmentum!

Still just Freddy on TV and sitcoms/reality TV
and by reality TV I do not mean the gathering and break-up you are talking about.
Will see after Freddy is done, will check MSNBC and then FOX as they are the two likeliest people to talk about it.
Opps. Networks are now on the Rupublic convention.
I had checked when Bush started and they had not switched over by then.
Actualy Tom Brocaw and co are pumping up the VP hahaha. But at the end he does note thin resume and that they were touting PTA experience early on (or perhaps he said in her last campaign).
omfg. Is there any organization promoting national action on this? who do we email/call (if we’re not in/from MN that is)? there should be an *ffing congressional investigation into this at the very least. What is wrong with these people/this country/these thugs?????
Thanks Kirk! I’ll add that to the post now.
good thing Obama cares so deeply about our civil rights, his campaign is probably readying one of his bold, eloquent statements right now! I for one can’t wait to hear his defense of our basic freedoms!
Blow by Blow account of McCain’s POW experience at RNC.
damn fdl servers just ate my comment. trying again…..
i’ve been getting emails, via listserv, from a goup i have worked with (miami 2003 ftaa and nyc 2004 rnc) and can confidently vouch for.
two members of the group were snatched from the poor people’s march and one of them was injured, possibly seriously: “
official phone numbers are below but i’ve also gotten an email that apparently the best number to call is probably 651-266-9350 (for the jail). please demand that all detainees be given immediate access to doctors and all medical attention they (the detainees) request.
St. Paul Mayor, Chris Coleman: 651.266.8510
Ramsey County Sherriff, Bob Fletcher: 651.266.8500
Complaint Number for the jail: 651-266-8989
oh nm.. thanks for the numbers Kirk
hmmm. i bet i know what listserv that came from.
siun – please check my comment @20. there may (not confirmed) be a fourth number that is even better than the other three. might as well include them all for now. i’m off to call and will report back.
Maybe this is really stupid, but maybe the protesters should sit down….sit-in. Do nothing. Be silent. Film everything. No shouting, no marching. Just stop and sit.
janes set up to live blogging the hojo whine upstairs *rubbing hands together gleefully&
Question for the lawyers in the group:
In a lot of the video that I’ve seen taken, the police officers have a number on their riot helmets (e.g. “M1234″). Is this number the same as their badge number? Can an individual cop be uniquely identified by this number?
There is a wealth of video data here of cops violating people’s civil liberties. I’d like to see a website that has video/still pictures of these guys in all their fascist glory, along with their name and home police department listed. If this information was on the web – accessible to their parents, spouses, kids, pastors, neighbors – they might be less likely to engage in this unlawful behavior.
Would it be legal to do something like this? Would the M-SP police departments be required by law to identify these officers by helmet number?
Of course they should as long as they are not afraid to get arrested. It would take longer to arrest lots of people and maybe less entergy to punch people, swing that big whopping stick they have, or slam them into a wall or the ground.
Might also turn out that they just water cannon everyone.
As noted above to have Bush say “…the angry Left…” will never stop George McCain is not the constitutional thing for the POTUS to say.
This is what democracy looks like?
Thank God Fred is over.
He noted that Biz taxes and Personal taxes come out of the same bucket…. as if. That old line is Reagan – the world he created for Biz now exists. For instance there are BILLIONS going to oil & overseas, etc.
That was about the only line that got real applause.
Now to see the non-coverage of anything protest related. By now this is likly policy to give the right of the TV ad time to the party that paid for it. You know so as not to rile up the regular folks who think they are invited.
Bah Lieberman.
Love it. All the info is gathered in public space: the same space where the “law” enforcement officers and private sppoks can video us. That makes public dissmemination of badge number / name/ department OK by me – but IANAL.
I mean LIEberman.
What a loser. HAHAH AHHA. He thinks he has a home here – he is like a fat cat that has nested in the Senate.
At least he is starting with “we are all Americans” after his ouch-bad joke.
Wonder who wrote his speech and how they are going to tie in the themes. The Repblic convention so far are sticking to their lies/omissions/exaggerations.
Here’s a fax number for the St. Paul Mayor’s Office:
(651) 266-8513
I was able to get through last night without a busy signal.
“…president in washington was absolutetly right…”
LIEberman
this is a good number to call. i just got a live person (a volunteer) who told me that there have been lots of calls. please keep the calls coming – it is a way to let the cops know that we are watching them. thank you!
Another course of action would be to contact your federal state reps and see if they can look into it, especially if one of their constituants is beat up or in jail. Might be able to help a bit on day 3 & 4.
From all the city officials on posted they seem pretty happy with how things are going.
JoeLIE is not going over all that well, the speech is all “loony lefty” after Freddy supporting actor delivered tepid fetid red meat.
thanks kirk – that’s the kind of info so important, imo, to get out. i will never blame protesters for any bad act until i can confirm it was not the police.
selise, thanks for getting that jail number up: great work!
Okay,
I called the Ramsey County Jail twice. First because the young man who answered the phone hung up on me. I redid my 15 second intro the second time and asked him, ” You are an American, right?” And he assured me he was.
I asked ” You understand that the military action against people protesting is against our Constitution, right?”.
He hung up a second time. It was the same guy answering the phones. How weird is that in a mass media culture?
I called at 8:15 Pacific time.
Thanks for the number – I was able to get through to a human pretty quickly by pressing ‘8′ when I got to the phone menu.
Fuck it!!!
Maybe I should call him again.
How do we reach Americans who have been indoctrinated into the “military V.S. the People doctrine?
There must be a way…..I wouldn’t have chosen Openhope as my name 2 years ago if I didn’t believe that there was a way to define truth=strength.
openhope: the way we reach people in power is to call during business hours.
From lost of mass arrests, I know calling the jail staff and debating the arrests is NOT helpful. The goal in calling the jail is to make a sympatico call intended to get excellent treatment for the detainees.
The jail staff didn’t arrest ‘em, and can’t release them.
Antagonist calls to them just fritter away our one source of leverage to help the detainees.
On Wed, calling Norm Coleman and everyone on the St. Paul city council who voted for the “city services agreement” that gave over city soveriegnity to the Secret Service and Fatherland Security is the prodcutive place to get after Americans who have been indoctrinated into the “military V.S. the People” doctrine?
That’s the way you are seeking – at least as far the arrestees’ well-being is concerned.
Good on ya for your passion and concern!
I do hope that Lindsay is safe and sound…these cops must be really really pumped up.
RNCs are just gated communities writ large.
newshour reported on the difficulty of speaking to people who still lurve Dubya while people at home are watching on the telly. awkward!
you are most welcome – but the great work is being done by those on the streets. the least we can do is have their back.
I’m back. Today’s action was incomprehensible. I didn’t even realize that the folks on the opposite side of the street were protesters. They were so subdued, they could have been commuters on an ordinary city street. It was only when I went back and looked at the pictures that I realized that some of them were holding signs.
The massive police response was completely disproportionate. After the tear gas started going off, guys on my side of the street started yelling “we’re not anarchists!” Most of the folks on the north side of Seventh, where I was standing, were Rage Against the Machine concert goers who were trying to get home after the show was cancelled by police.
T H E W H O L E W O R L D I S W A T C H I N G!
And this time, we’ve got the blogs.
I invite everyone to join me over the next few days in a merciless blogpile against the machine, particularly against those creeps who arrested Amy Goodman, because we have their faces on tape.
We need to expose them all, personally, and the executives and managers who gave them their orders. Lets dissect, expose and publish their chain of command up and down the line, and make them answer for their fascist antics.
T H I S I S T H E U. S. A., not the Soviet Union!
We need to take those bullies to task, one name and face at a time, until Justice flows down like water from the blogs.
Anyone who thinks this is even a little snarky should think again.
I sincerely think we need to identify and publicly expose the guilty, bully cops and find out who ordered them to violate Amy’s civil rights.
The videow are all the evidence we need.
All hear on the news is about the ANARCHISTS in St Paul. I think the PR war was lost before it began. Too bad.
