Lost in the battle between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton last night were some more jaw-dropping numbers on the Republican side of the ledger. During the last three primaries–Pennsylvania, Indiana and North Carolina–McCain has failed to break 80% when running against nobody. In other words, John McCain has been losing between a fifth and a quarter of Republicans to protest votes for Mike Huckabee, Ron Paul and "none of the above" just because many GOP voters are disenchanted with their nominee.
This is startling, and should be leading to the Republican National Committee to buy Milk Of Magnesia in bulk about now. In fact, as I chronicle in The Real McCain, the Arizona senator has long suffered from this problem, which could come back to haunt him in the general election. From the book:
Some high-ranking Republicans believe that McCain was motivated simply and purely by revenge on the Bush machine and allied conservatives, which had so mercilessly attacked him in South Carolina. In fact, one longtime conservative activist, Richard Viguerie, started a website in February of 2008 called conservativeHQ.com, to "relaunch the conservative movement." In his debut email promoting the site, he attacked McCain, "who seems to have disdain for conservatives and conservative ideas." This sentiment could often be heard in a growing chorus from the Right starting all the way back in 2001 (p.15).
I have already spoken to two sources, one a Republican operative and another located at a Republican think tank in Washington, who both confirmed to me that McCain’s foray into extolling Alito and Roberts this past week was only the beginning. He needs to win conservatives. And the McCain campaign is beginning to fear that that a sizeable percentage may stay home or bolt to Barack Obama (or perhaps former Congressman Bob Barr, if he does indeedrun for president on the Libertarian line, giving those Ron Paul voters a place to go).

About FDL Action
Wow!! Congrats on the new site!!
And I agree that the low McCain/GOP vote totals are one of the most fundamental, critical factors in this campaign.
Lovely to see you as part of FDL!
Tribe Vibe.
Welcome Cliff!
Where am I? *G*
Wow, nice site! I thought I took LSD or something…
Wow! another awesome innovation at the Lake.
A big welcome to Cliff!
Seems apropos: Quiet Revolution: Part One — Strategy
nice missive silo.
Wow
Hi Cliff!
Gang, we’ve been suffering through some technical glitches this afternoon while we’ve been getting Cliff’s site up and running … and that, unfortunately, meant that the sixty or so comments already on this thread at FDL have been temporarily blipped out. We’re terribly sorry about that, but we’re working to restore them.
This is a great observation and one that has been one my for at least one Friedman Unit.
Just sit down, take it easy and go with the flow. It’s only a drug an it will wear off.
…some sort of “spaced, I’m” contimuum…
“Cliff Schechter, an EXPERT, never heard of him” Welcome!
I had a beer…heh, heh.
When it said “Comments closed”…I had just made a comment…I thought it was my fault! Then suddenly I landed over here…pretty funny.
Sounds to me like McSame has to move (or stay) right in the general campaign to try to hold fundie base. That sounds like a good thing, as it will be more difficult to disguise himself as some sort of moderate.
If the MSM ever wakes up, perhaps we’ll stand a chance of getting the real story out.
Somebody is busy behind the curtain today…….
Having the same kind of day I am.
My condolences.
Oops, Schecter’s Silo.
Exactly my concern! What did they put in this beer?
congrats cliff!
ok, what the hell happened…refreshed my page and all the comments went wooooooosh……and now i’m on a purple page with a few comments……whrere’d they go?……and this thread isn’t on the firedoglake home page anymore…….let’s do the time warp agaaaaaaaain.

you know fdl, it’s ok to improve on the wheel, it’s a good thing, but not if it no longer pushes the cart…….maybe it can be used for something else, oh, like a yard ornament. /s take a joke, travelling humor, behind the wheel too long talking to my dog for hours……i invented all kinds of things while travelling, too bad none of them will work. and the only thing on the radio was two-faced donna brazille………last time i forget my walkman. thank god for show tunes.

while I kiss the sky
Trying to recreate my awesome comment that got swamped by the “spaced, I’m” continuum… *g*
Who are these voters? What are they thinking? Why are they making the effort to come out to vote in a GOP primary that’s already decided — and not vote for their party’s nominee? Are they protesting? Are they enamored of another? Do they really dislike McCain so much? Do they just want to send a message? What message are they sending?
Interesting, isn’t it, that this most fascinating group of voters, the 20-25% who vote “Not McCain” in every state since he’s clinched the nomination, are NEVER studied, exit-polled, or even discussed by the cable gasbags.
I think many republicans are seriously dispirited. Most – but not all – can now see that chimp is a moron, backed by the worst kind of thugs. Most repubs realize the country, and the world, is a mess, and a great deal of the responsibility for that lies with the chimporer and his henchmen.
Some may be drifting across party lines.
Some may just be giving up on voting.
This actually is a great opportunity to speak to people, neighbors, people in supermarket lines, etc., to begin to help them open up, step away from their party. One thing is true of these demoralized repubs – they don’t want their noses rubbed in Bush’s bullshit. They don’t want to be blamed for supporting him all along. They just want to distance themselves, and it’s a real opportunity to bring some under the big tent.
And the blogroll ain’t even up yet!
“Relaunch the conservative movement”?
What in the name of goddess’ green earth does that even mean?
They’re gonna exhume Barry Goldwater and put him on stage with McShitForBrains for the remainder of the campaign. They’ve got a special slab for him on the Sugar Momma Express.
How can you pick on THIS cute little fella?!?!
Welcome to the Lake, Cliff, great start.
The electoral woes of the Republicans are woefully under reported.
Don’t expect any mention in the MSM, we wouldn’t want to discourage any future political advertising revenues. Those Republicans may still be good for another 50 million, if McCain gets a bye on his latest solemn oath.
Sweet music to my ears.
Wow!
Cool place …
Ah, so … Cliff’s Place.
Neat.
And the topic of “can’t, sir” … is McLackey McCain’ts less than delirious receptionation amongst the Republican’ts – Hoo Boy!
I think I see a solution:
HRC has apparently stated that if she were in the ‘Can’t Party she woulda clinched ‘it’ by now.
So?
Now bear with me here,
Sir John the ‘Maverick’ Divine is kinda tankin’ and a number of HRC’s followers ain’t a-tall happy with the choice left ‘em …
So?
I’m a-gettin’ there, be patient …
If HRC switched parties and, using her bonafides, kinda nudged John um … over the line …
Well damn, then the ‘worst’ we could get would be … not all that ‘bad’.
Look-a-here … John is albatross-laden and HRC believes it really is her ‘turn’ … I mean, let’s just count John out, get HRC back to her roots and … Shi — zzzam, BINGO! Jus’ like that we got a better deal all around.
‘Course them 30%’ers are gonna freak but they could use a little ‘nudge’ their own selves.
‘Twouldn’t take much …
And ole Gush Limpaw, not to mention KKKKKarl would be foamin’ and fumin’…
‘Turn about’, ya know, being fair play and so on …
Note: The preceding snarkishly snarkly snark is only snark and will, hopefully, to be taken only as an humorous attempt at inappropriate levity about a topic concerning which I am fairly sick and tired, and doesn’t reflect on anyone or anything under the sun, in this solar system or within the confines of this or any other universe or even life as we know it. It is pure, grade “A” Bullshit. But, you see, my BS meter is pegged, the accelerator is stuck, and we’ve already spent eight years drivin’ full speed into the ditch. With, oddly enough, pretty consistent results. And I’m ready, willing, and able to deal with some change and I’m not talking about coins a-jinglin’ in my pocket … although I suspect far too much of that has gone into far too few pockets. So? Are we ‘there’ yet?
Thank you, Cliff, for bringing us the story the MSM is ignoring.
While Limbaugh is claiming his ‘operation chaos’ has sent the Democratic Party into a state of disarray, the Republicans are in deep trouble with their ‘heir apparent’ McCain.
I wonder how many crossover voters to the Democratic party are there, not to create chaos, but to choose a viable candidate who has the best interest of the American people in mind? And how many of these crossover voters will remain with the Democratic party as they see the Republicans try to fit a round candidate into their square peg?
Thanks so much guys! Wow I did expect so many comments this first time out. I look forward to seeing more of all you guys around here. And promise we have some great stories on tap!
Cliff
lol!
